Cisco Speaker/Presenter needed for Rubi-con 2002 [7:18265]
Hello all, Please don't consider this spam as I am asking about Cisco specifically. I am one of the core members of the Rubi-con Network Security and Technology Conference held yearly in Detroit, Michigan and I am looking for one (or several for that matter) people who would be interested in coming to our conference to speak about Cisco equipment, security and network technology. The conference is held April 5th to 7th, 2002 in the Romulus Marriot in Detroit, Michigan. We have speakers and attendees from all over the world attending this, the 4th annual conference. If you are interested in speaking, please let me know immediately so we can give you a choice of dates and times to present. If you want to put in a plug about your work during your speech, that's fine as well. We look for quality speakers and we think you would be a wonderful addition to our line-up. If you would like more information on Rubi-con, check out http://www.rubi-con.org. Even if you are not interested in speaking, it would be a treat to have you come as an attendee. Please send all messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (off list please) so we don't drag this through the mailing list. I haven't a clue how Lucas is going to pull this off... Here are the timetable problems that he faces: Anakin obviously has to grow up and undergo Jedi training. He also has to fight in the 'Clone Wars' along with Kenobi and the rest of the Jedi. He needs to mature to the point where he can develop the love interest with Queen Amadala (Luke and Leia's mother). Presumably, all of this must happen in the Second Movie, because by the time Episode III is completed, Amadala must be pregnant, Anakin must have his accident and be lost to the dark side, and Kenobi must secret Amadala away to have the twins. Luke has to be delivered to Owen and Beru on Tatooine, and Leia must be taken to Bail Organa on Alderaan. Vader must also become Senator Palpatine's servant, Palpatine must dissolve the Senate, annointing himself Emperor, and together, the Emperor and Vader must conduct the great Jedi purge. These are simply the storylines which reasonably must be satisfied based on what we know to be History from the Episode IV, V, and VI perspective. Of course, some people think I take this all too seriously. RE: what is the average age of people in this stuff?
I find myself in much of the same situation Dale is in. At 20, I am busting with energy most of the time. I know how to fix the problems and I have the desire to, but I often get the "you're not old enough and experienced enough" excuse from people who haven't seen my work. A lot of people assume that experience and ability comes with age. I agree with that point to a degree. However, I know a lot of teenagers who are brilliant and a lot of people in their 40s who don't have sense enough to get out of the rain. :-) Denis Denis A. RE: CCIE salary
Things are very similar here. The thing I've found in Michigan is that most people with certs get jobs based on the certs, not their knowledge. This really really isn't fair for people who got the certs BECAUSE they were knowledgable in that area, but that's life. Around here, depending on the size of the company, an MCSE can make 55-90k, a CCNA can make 45-60k, a CCNP makes 55-80k, a CNE5 (only Novell) makes about 50k and a CCIE can make 130-150k. The two CCIEs I know both make over 150k because they do nothing but design massive networks for ISPs and backbone providers. Denis Denis A. CCIE = around $125 annually The difference is that CCIE's will get higher end, network architect type positions, while all the other certs will get you Systems Administrator jobs that might also have responsibility for a router or switch or two... Outside the System Admin circle, there simply isn't the demand for these lower end certs. If you want to design and build large, complex enterprise networks, you wimply won't get that job until you are a CCIE. If you want to administer those networks and the systems that reside on them, then these lower certs are your ticket to an interview... RE: Disappointed with ccnp!!
I have to agree, but from the other side of the scope. I'm 20 and got into it because I loved it, but also because I wanted the money. When I got into computers (about 9 years ago), I really wanted to be rich and powerful. I grew up in a lower-class family (sub 25k/year) and I didn't want to live like that. I started mowing lawns why I was 12 to get the money that I could prove against my peers. I mowed 60 lawns a week and went to school. Lots of good money, almost $40k year actually, but I hated the work. Then I got really heavily into computers. As for people switching gears, I often find that young people are even more into switching than older folks. The trends tends to show that from 18-25, people will switch careers (or atleast physical jobs) from 3-4 times. That is pretty typical. Denis Denis A. Date: Wednesday, January 10, 2001 12:30 AM Don't be disappointed with your CCNP, that's for sure... Just don't consider it the end all to getting that job. I started with my company in June 1999 with an MSCE and CCNA, neither of which I attained with work experience, one with school, the other self study. I got a job setting up small LANs for scanning projects, and then doing the scanning along with the others! Then, moved UP to the help desk!!! Didn't even start there, is what I am getting at. Got promoted in 2 months to help desk supervisor by doing a good job (I think), then moved to engineering team in 6 months to help design our new Cisco network because there were only 2 other CCNAs around to do it. In June of 2000 I attained my CCNP, with some work experience on the equipment and our test lab at work. Now I would consider myself a valuable member of our Network Infrastructure team, but it didn't happen overnight, and even though I wanted it to happen, I really didn't expect it to at this company based on where I started. One more thought. There are those, including a very senior Microsoft Architect here, who still say I don't have enough experience to go after my CCIE, that it would not benefit myself, or the company because even if I attained it, I would not have enough years of experience to back that cert. Well to him, I said, I am not going to sit around 10 years until I have your experience, I am going to study everyday, and get involved with every network problem and design issue I can to gain experience faster in troubleshooting methods, and seeing various levels of problems. To that he just shook his head and said with a smile... Kids nowdays.. ;-) By the way, I am 32. Cisco vs. HP Switches

Wireless Networking
I am going to have to rewire our whole network for centralization in the next couple of months and am looking at possibly making some or all of it wireless. We have an all NT network. Would it be cheaper in the long run to just rerun homeruns to a centralized switch and stay wired? What technology would we need to make this work?
