I haven't read the book yet but I used to work with the author and
happily recommend anything that he puts his name to.

Knowing the amount of time he put into the book, I'd say that $70 is a steal

RE: Yikes....New product alert.... [7:10031]

2001-06-26 Thread Feargal Ledwidge

Basically its a high end (comparable to 7200 VXR) in a 1U chassis and
appears aimed at the service provider market.

Heres what Cisco have to say:

Cisco Systems has developed a flexible and robust network services gateway
to meet these needs: the Cisco 7401 ASR-GW. The Cisco 7401 ASR-GW combines
high performance and availability with a rich feature set and ease of
management. The Cisco 7401 ASR-GW extends the Cisco product portfolio by
providing industry-leading performance and rich IP services in a one-rack
unit (1RU) form factor. The Cisco 7401 ASR-GW is the result of combining the
small form factor of Cisco routers such as the Cisco 2600 and 3620 Series
with the performance and services of the Cisco 7200 VXR Series. The Cisco
Parallel Express Forwarding (PXF) technology embedded in the Cisco 7401
ASR-GW is the key for delivering the line-rate performance and features
required in a state-of-the-art network services gateway.

Looks kinda groovy .

If your Alpha has a route to 10.0.0.0 then of course you can't add a route

You need to delete the 10.0.0.0 route first.

My company have an Alpha Server at Head Office. The server's IP address is
10.1.1.1 and netmask is 255.0.0.0. This Alpha Server OS version can not
change the subnet mask. My company have sevaral branch. The Nework Number on
each brach look like 10.2.0.0, 10.3.0.0, 10.4.0.0, .
I cannot add static route like 10.2.0.0, 10.3.0.0, ...
on Alpha Server.Because it's not accept. (It's Network Number is 10.0.0.0)

At Head Office, There are 2 Cisco Routers to Connect to branch A.
Each Router connect to branch A on different Path. There are only
one router at branch A but two Serial interface. The 1st Serial interface
connect to H/O. The another connect to the other branch.
Let's say the Network Number of Branch A is 10.2.0.0.
Pls. see the picture

H/O-R1--Ra---Brach A
 | |
 |--R2--{Rx--Branch C--Rx}-

When Server at H/O send packet to address 10.2.1.1 that the host address in
branch A. It broadcast then R1 an R2 catch the packet then tried to send to
branch A. Cisco Router automatically send the packet.
(There are no static route to brach A on Server (because I cannot do that,
the server does not accept it) and the Default Route is not both R1 and R2.)

I want R1 is a main router to send packet. If Serial interface of R1 down
then R1 send the packet to R2. (I do this by manual configure
static route and set the cost on R1)

But in the real world it cannot do like that. Because R1 and R2 are
automatically forward the packet.

Is there a command to disable the automatically forward?

Don't try to tell me to change the IP Numbering
because there are a lot of factor that I can not do that.

RE: Using a SCO unix box to manage a set of routers

2001-04-01 Thread Feargal Ledwidge

A couple of places you can try:

Digi International: www.dgii.com

Digi is technically advanced although expensive. Their boards are very
advanced - but are probably more than you need.

Rocketport (from Comtrol): http://www.comtrol.com/sales/specs/rp.htm

This are simpler and better priced. If you want basic serial connections -
then these are for you.

I've used both of these in more installs than I can remember and both are
excellent.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Using a SCO unix box to manage a set of routers

Hi folks,
I have a sco unix box which I would like to have 4 vt100 terminals attach
to via serial. These 4 vty terminals will be used for students who will
be accessing my cisco lab. I'm running into a situation where I can only
hook up two vt100 terminals to my SCO unix box because the hardware is
Intel and the motherboard has only two serial ports(com1 com2). Where
can I get a serial cards that allow me to hook up 4 vt100 terminals to
that SCO unix box? I know this is a silly setup. This is a requirement,
not an option. Otherwise, I could setup those students to acess via
telnet. Thanks for any input.
