We use static, although I had a large test-bed setup with dynamic vlans. The good thing about static vlans is when it comes to troubleshooting. If you keep vlan1 (teachers) and vlan2 (students) in one closet, and vlan3 (teachers) and vlan4 (students) in another closet, it simpilifies things (teachers for example don't have to be in the same vlan, but you can still give vlans 1 and 3 the same access to resources through ACL's/VACL's, or NT shares for that matter). For example, say you have a STP or multicast anomoly... you have confined the problem to one closet versus the entire campus. Hopefully that made sense! Funny CSU WIC-T1 problem. [7:30264]
Just curious if this has ever happened to anyone... I had one of my T-1's go down today. Turned out is was actually on my end. Anyways, I ran a loopback from the CLI to no avail (Down/Down). I then went and swapped my cable, nota. So what the hey, I put it in loopback by pressing the button on the module itself. I did this twice as I'm weird like that funny thing though... after I took it out of the loopback the second time, my interface came back up (UP/UP)! I thought this was very strange and can only assume that I have a failing CSU? Everything looks cool now though. I do have spares, but I left it to see if this happens again soon. I've got both configured and it works great... make sure you're running at least 12.1(8)E5 on MSFC2 though as I have run into some bugs with 12.1(7)E. Thanks. On Monday I'll clear the counters and write that stuff down. We're doing layer 2 switching with fast ethernet to all the closets and about half/half to the desktops (10/100). There's mostly switches in the closets but we do have some hubs as well. We have Spectrum and I'm still learning it but I did just figure out how to take reports with it before I left on Friday. I should now be able to see where most of the traffic is coming/going. Thanks for your help. I'll post back the info I get next week.
