OSPF Default Routing [7:46111]

2002-06-08 Thread Kage Roc

Hey all,

I am currently using the CCIE Practical sutides text and I am confused on
the OSPF Default routing part. On Page 795, Karl says that is you use the
DEFAULT-NETWORK x.x.x.x command generate the Deafult route you need the
ALWAYS statment present in the DEFAULT-INFORMATION ORIGINATE command. Then
in Lab 24, as an optional step he wants you to generate the default route
and proporgate it throughout the OSPF network without using static routes
and if the network becomes unavailable he does not want the default route to
proporgate. Now, in his Lab walkthorough he says to put the ALWAYS statment
in the DEFAULT-INFORMATION ORIGINATE command but if you do that then the
deafault route will proporgate even if the network is down. My question is
Why would I ever want the ALWAYS statment and is he wrong about the
requierments listed abaove?

Thanks

RE: Disable show run [7:46112]

2002-06-08 Thread Kage Roc

There are level of commands 1-7 I think not sure though. What you can do is
setup username auth. and assigh users with levels of commands. But I dont
think you can just turn sho runn off. Hope that helps.

Re: OSPF Default Routing [7:46111]

2002-06-08 Thread Kage Roc

Thank you for your reply :)

If I keep the ALWAYS statment in there the route still propagates even when
I turn/unplug the ethernet on dental_ho. If I take out the ALWAYS statment
the optional requirement is met. That is if I uplug the the interface the
route stops propagating. What I think is going on here is that the ALWAYS
tells the router to propagate even if the route map condition is not met. I
think this is a mistake in the book. But what really bugs me is that Karl
said you must have the ALWAYS in there if your going to use IP OSPF
DEFAULT-NETWORK command but I took out the always and everything worked fine.

RE: EIGRP routing issue. [7:42479]

2002-04-25 Thread Kage Roc

Im am not sure why this is happening but I'ill take a stab at it.

If a router that is running EIGRP borders 2 major network (i.e. 209.53.131.0
Router-208.181.160.0) and auto-summary is turned on within the EIGRP
config, it will advertise the 208.181.160.0/24 to the network. It will also
add the 208.181.160.0/24 to the route table and point it to Null 0. (Im not
sure why it does this but I bet its to prevent a routing loop) You can try
to turn the auto-summ off on that router. Again I am not sure whats going
on here but that is my guess. Hope this helps :)

Re: Added HSRP can't surf or Resolve DNS [7:42592]

2002-04-25 Thread Kage Roc

I cannot think of a scenario where you would use HSRP without the standby
and active interface not plugged into a switch/hub or 2 seperate switches
that are trunked. Here is an ASCII visual that may help:

65096509
\ /
 \ /
  -HUB/SWITCH---
   |
   |
 HOST

OR

6509 6509
 \/
  \ /
switch switch
  ||
  ||
  --host---

The configs you posted look fine Make sure you Physical design matches one
of the ASCII visuals. Hope this helps ;)

RE: OSPF over ISDN demand circuit [7:42348]

2002-04-23 Thread Kage Roc

I have seen this b4 when I configured Demand circut.

First of all, OSPF will attempt send an update accross that ISDN line when
somthing changs in the ospf database. So my guess is somthin is changing in
the database (i.e. a route flap) Now, when I had this problem the router
that was running OSPF /w demand circut and intiating the ISDN call was
Mutally redistributing between 2 protocols (ospf and igrp)and because I was
using a classess RP, IGRP, and running the same major NET on the eth and
ISDN, IGRP was adv. the ISDN network. I was also running PPP over the ISDN
link.

Here was my problem:

OSPF dials the adjacent router to update. When a PPP session is estab. a
host route gets installed on both PPP talkers (it's just the way PPP works
do ask me why)

When OSPF is done the BRI will go down. Here is the fun part :) That host
route dissapears so that route is pulled from the ospf database adn from
IGRP, but IGRP redistrbutes back to OSPF that the host route is gone and the
MAXAGE of the OSPF DB changes and that is why OSPF dials again. The way
that cisco recommends fixing this is to filter that host route from being
redistributed into OSPF. That should fix the problem. I hope this helps :)

Question on RIPv2 example in Doyles routing book [7:41991]

2002-04-19 Thread Kage Roc

When a router that is running RIPv1 recieves a RIPv2 update with a subnet
(i.e 192.168.13.80\28) will the RIPv1 router add the subnet and mask to the
routing table as is or will it still apply the mask of the recieving
interface ont the the subnet? According to doyles book (Chapter 7
troubleshooting exercises) the RIPv1 route will add the mask of the
recieving interface.

Summary addressing [7:41998]

2002-04-19 Thread Kage Roc

I promise I will not be a knowledge leech, I will contribute what I know as
well. Ofcourse I do have a question regarding IP Summaization: Up untill
today I thought I had summarization down cold until I tried a few self made
excercises. The formula I used to gather a summ address was 2n=x. Thats 2
to the n power equals x.
x is the number of subnets that you want to summarize and n will be how much
you subtract from the lowest mask of those subnets. for example:

216.52.146.136/30
216.52.146.140/30
216.52.146.144/30
216.52.146.148/30

using that formula the summ would be 216.52.146.136/28 which is not a valid
route. Hoever that formula works here:
216.52.146.48/29
216.52.146.56/29

summ route: 216.52.146.48 /28

I guess my question is, what is the best/effective/convient way to derive
summary addresses? Thanks for any input.

RE: PPP on 2514 [7:41973]

2002-04-19 Thread Kage Roc

If the ISP indeed gave you a /30 for the PtP and a subnet for your internal
hosts (which it lookeslike they did) you can still use your insde 192
addresses on the inside. Take the 164.65.13.89 255.255.255.252 and assign
that to the loopback 0 interface and use that address to NAT to. This way
the world will see all of your internal IP hosts as 164.65.13.89. Hope
that helps.

2002-04-19 Thread Kage Roc

Great example, however let me make sure that we all aware of the
terminologies, and correct me if I am wrong:

Feasible Successor's are next-hop routers that advertise a routes towarads a
given destination

Successor\s are the choosen next-hop router\s towards a given destination

Feasible Distance is the lowest calculated metric towards a given destonation
