The CCNA exam 640-507 has been replaced by 640-607 and now includes
software simulation questions requiring you to configure a network.

It is an OK book. She knows her stuff very well, but her book alone is
not all that you will need to pass Routing. I would suggest using her
book along with TCP/IP Volume I and II. The big TCP/IP books will get
into a lot more detail on the topics covered in 640-503. The second
volume of TCP/IP covers BGP4 with about 150 pages where Claire only has
about 25 or so on BGP4. Sure, you won't need all 150 pages of BGP to
pass the test, but it wouldn't hurt to know it. I used her book as a
guide only

What way would you guys suggest setting them up?

I was thinking of just configuring them via serial then link them via

Any suggestions?

RE: CCNP exams [7:39172]

2002-03-22 Thread Matthew Meiers

You are absolutely correct about the people who are not native English
speakers and the people that are bad test takers, but I don't think the
people that are complaining about exam formats fall into that category.
I am been nailed with more email about Cisco and the new exam format
than I care to hear about. As far as tricky wording and poor questions,
hey that happens and even the best test takers get nailed with those.
It is an associate level exam; the simulations cannot be that difficult.
What is the worst that Cisco is going to have you do? Cisco could do
like Extreme networks and make you take a hands-on lab for the basic
certification.

I understand what you are saying, but your comments are simplistic.
There
are a lot of people out there with considerable experience and skill
that
are not good test takers (a good friend of mine is one of them). People
that are not native English speakers can also have problems with these
exams.

Many of the certification exams test your ability to memorize command
syntax
(that in real life you'd use the "?" for), have trick questions, or flat
out
have poor wording. To think that these exams are an accurate reflection
of
ability is tough to believe.

Sounds like you are talking from your own experiences.

I purchased all 500 series material not long ago. I figured since they
just came out with the 500 series I would be good for a while.

Imagine you sat down for the SAT, and on the top of the page it said
"attention, now this test is totally different". Then a guy who took it
5 years ago is saying that he got a 1300, but only had 55 questions.
Another guy took it this year and is saying he got a 1200 but it had 69
questions.

In my own humble opinion it is enough with the changes already. Please
make it a stable exam, which is equal for everyone. Make it the same
score, make it the same number of questions. Try to put some consistency
in it. And most of all, keep some of us with test anxiety in the loop.

Actually working on routers, switches comes from hands on experience
with the products. There is not way to simulate a large enterprise of
Routers and switches on 1 PC in a testing center. Please, have some
common sense before you post garbage like this.

There are a few of us who actually studied really hard for the exams
they already passed. Some of you in this group, can read the table of
contents on all Cisco press books and pass the 4 exams the next day. I
am not one of those people, I spent at least 200 hours studying for CCNP
routing exam, if not more.

I got about 100 emails for me to take the beta exams, I deleted all of
them. I think they had major issues getting people to take the betas.
The majority of people I know who are in the middle of the CCNP do not
welcome this change. Maybe there is too many CCNP and this is a tactic
to slow it down by making some of them mad.

I know some of us seem dumb, when we can't pass the test by osmosis. But
consider everyone taking the CCNP doesn't eat, sleep and drink routers
and switches. Network engineers, most of us are generalist, being
expected to know every piece of technology and software under the sun.
And at the same time, going to school, and studying for other vendors
certs.

I think that if you start a "series" you should be allowed to finish the
same one you started. Now I am wondering about the Cisco security
series, will that change when I am half way through it? I guess the
current policy is that Cisco can make any changed they feel like, at any
time.

I just think that Cisco should have let people who are in the middle of
their CCNP finish the series. And new people who decide to be a CCNP
start a new series. I am all for making the program better, but I think
they didn't give much thought to this one.

Just my 2 cents.

preparation than if i go through a training company (if anyone has any

actual models (i.e. 2500, 2600, etc.). b/c each router can perform the
duties of many others, depending on the configuration, my questions are:
(1) in general, what equipment constitutes a sufficient lab setting
(CCIE's highly recommended to reply); and (2) what models of each series
should i be looking at?

hope it's clear!

Just wanted to say that anyone who bought the CCNP Training kit
Software, ISBN 1587200422, you can return it, and they will give you a
completely new CD VS 2.0. I bought this Training kit, it has so many
wrong answers, and so many bugs I though I was on candid camera. They
did offer a SP1 update right after the product was released, but that
didn't help much. This is a first time that I have heard of a total
recall of a software product. I really could write like 20 pages about
what was wrong with the kit, it was that bad. Well, just thought I
would share this, if anyone bought it, because I didn't know. I am on
the Cisco press mailing list, and I registered my product, but they
never bothered to contact me concerning this. This is the very last time
I buy software without asking anyone else if they used it. Well, I guess
I am going to send away for the version 2, to see if it is any better.
It's a little late now, especially since I am half way though my CCNP.
Ciscopress really dropped the ball on this one, especially since most of
the people who bought it didn't know any better about the answers being
mostly wrong, myself included. Ironically I failed routing using the
kit. I passed routing and switching since then, using other material.

The kit is just way too small for the amount of information you are to
know for CCNP. The entire section on BGP4 in the routing book is only
100 pages. I am telling you that there is no way that you will know BGP
well enough to pass the exam after reading that section. I used CCIE
study guides to pass my CCNP. The CCIE books from Cisco Press are much
more complete, as well they should be, but you will KNOW the topic, not
just "know" the topic.

Does this clarify?

exams as no longer applicable on the tracking page.

Cisco has finished the beta testing to CCNP exams. Does anyone know
when
are they going to roll out and replace the current CCNP 2.0?

Tony

That is because they have not started the 600 series for CCNP. There is
no word on when the new tests are supposed to go live.

Funny, I just logged into 2test.com and it still is letting me schedule
500 series exams :)

They are still listed on Cisco's web as exams for CCNP, so I
guess
that they are valid until officially revoked.

One question here. If someone (me) passes exam from 500 series,
and
the test is revoked before I pass all 4 four CCNP. Does the "old" one I
passed cound for new CCNP?

Marko.

You should all use www.bookpool.com to buy your tech books. The prices
are much better than BN and Amazon.

I am not sure, haven't heard much about it yet. But I am taking a "wait
and see" attitude for buying any books until the release the new exams.
Because as soon at the CCNA 600 exam was out, there were new books for
it on BN.com and Amazon. Last think you want to do is buy a book, and
the next day its considered "Old".

I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same issues as we are
having
at work. We have about 20 remote sites and are in the middle of a
conversion
from 3com equipment to Cisco. Most of the sites we upgrade are getting a
Cisco Catalyst 2950 or 3550 switch. A pattern seems to be forming in
that
after every site that is upgraded, a laptop user who bounces around from
site to site, cannot login because it won't let go of their ip address
from
the last site they were at. No one has this problem at the remaining
3com
switch sites. At first I thought it was coincidence, but now its clear
that
it happens at sites we change to cisco switches. I have enabled portfast
on
all the switchports that are used for workstation access. This has
alleviated some of the problems with laptop users, but others still have
difficulty. Most users are using Dell laptops with Xircom network/modem
combo card. I thought for sure portfast would cure the issue, but it has
not. Anyone else have any experience, thoughts, or ideas?
