NTP Question [7:29770]

2001-12-20 Thread Mcfadden, Chuck

A friend of mine was doing a PIX installation on the edge of a W2K
environment. He was trying to allow NTP through the PIX but it would not
go. He found that, since he was using an inbound ACL, the packet would
eventually reach the explicit deny. According to his research, he had to
allow port 123 (NTP) in his ACL in able to allow it through the firewall,
even though it was established. The question that has since been
unanswered: Does NTP use UDP or TCP or both? Any ideas?

RE: C2620 with NM-1FE1R2W? [7:28716]

2001-12-11 Thread Mcfadden, Chuck

Actually this NM does not work in the 26xx series. I believe the logic is
that the processor in the 26xx cannot handle the additional FE cards,
however that's just my guess (I mean a 2621 would have two right?). You
will find that any NM-FExxx will not work in a 26xx router.
Sorry 'bout the bad news,

Theres a good croos-referencing tool at:

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/front.x/Support/HWSWmatrix/hwswmatrix.cgi

It lets you search by chassis model and module model and shows the IOS
version supported.

RE: Need BCRAN latest Dumps! [7:28236]

2001-12-06 Thread Mcfadden, Chuck

We not prone to liking dumps around here. You see, there's this thing
called a confidentiality agreement. You know, that pesky thing that keeps
us who have work our tails off to earn a certification or two by reading
books, doing installations, asking questions, and buying labs for our homes.
You know, those of us who care more about the technology than the piece of
paper on the wall.

My feeling is, "to each his own." If you want to cheat to gain your
certification, fine. However, don't fault me when our certification levels
are equal and we are vying for the same customer or job. I can assure you,
it may take me longer to get my certifications than you, but when we come
face to face with the same customer or job...stand aside, it's all mine. So
you go ahead and cheat then wonder why you can't rate amongst your peers.

I seem to remember Microsoft had this problem with the MCSE NT4.0
certification. After a while everyone had their MCSE. Maybe 15% of the
MCSE were worth a salt because everyone cheated. Let's not let this guy
decline our value in the market. I may seem a bit extreme, but we need to
ban all of these cheater sites. They destroy everything we value with the
certification. Even if you only use them to brush up before the test. If
you can't pass the test do more, do cheat!!

If you really got a class B, it would be 255.255.0.0, where you could just
create 254 Class C networks.

If you got a class C network, you can't do it without more VLANs.

You will need to static assign a NAT address to your server's IP. Then you
tell the remote user the public IP address to connect to, NAT takes care of

1. (Probably the only real reason) Off load processor overhead by having

Hi all.

What are some of the reasons why a person would choose a PIX solution
rather than a good router with the the right IOS for security?

From what I've read on Cisco's site, there does not seem to be the huge
gap between using a router as a firewall solution vs. using a PIX, as some
people make it sound.

One last thing...for the life of me, I can't find what "PIX" stands for!
Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I followed the link. The data sheet says :

Quote
Interfaces
Console Port: RS-232 (RJ-45) 9600 baud
Outside: Integrated 10BaseT port, half-duplex, RJ45
Inside: Integrated auto-sensing, auto-MDIX 4-port 10/100 switch, RJ45
Unquote

The way I interpret this is that this PIX basically has two interfaces :-
one outside (10BaseT port) and one inside but implemented as 4-port switch,
which means you can only have two segments and no DMZ. Please correct me if
I am wrong.

RE: Can 10Base2/5 be connected with FDDI ? [7:27352]

2001-11-26 Thread Mcfadden, Chuck

Basically you're asking if Ethernet can be connected to FDDI. Sure, if you
have a hub that has Ethernet connections (10Base2/5/10/100) with a FDDI
uplink. I seem to remember that Cabletron (now Enterasys) used to have a
switch with this possibility (I think it was a 2200 or 2400 series).

That answers the "How?" now for the "Why?". Since these are two different
framing types (Ethernet and FDDI) you need a bridge. FDDI's frame size is
much larger than Ethernet and therefore a bridge is needed to be able to
interpret between the different frame sizes.

I don't believe Cisco sells a device with these specific interface types in
one box. Could be wrong, but...The Cabletron box used to cost about $2500
list for this solution. Could be worth a call to Portland.

Can 10Base2/5 be connected with FDDI ? If yes, how ?
If no, why ? Thank you.

RE: token ring to eth [7:26828]

2001-11-20 Thread Mcfadden, Chuck

There is no media converter for Token Ring to Ethernet. A media converter
changes the media (i.e. copper to fiber), not the framing type. As Darren
eluded below, you need a bridge to change from Token Ring to Ethernet (or a
2513 is a good solution, also).

What exactly are you trying to accomplish here? The 2502 only has one
token ring and two serial interfaces. If you had a 2513, the router
itself would be your 'media converter' between TR and Ethernet segments.
To my knowledge, there is no such animal to change your token ring
interface into an ethernet interface.

I contacted Cisco, the Veterans Administration and the California Department
of Veterans Affairs about this subject in July. Unfortunately I haven't hear
anything in a while.

The VA advised me that for veterans to be reimbursed for the Cisco Career
Certification program, the program would have to be "accredited" by the
state Department of Veterans Affairs in the state where Cisco's headquarters
resides.

I contacted the California Department of Veterans affairs and found them to
be very cooperative. They wished to be put in contact with the correct
people at Cisco, so I gave them all of the contact info I could from my
perspective.

After a couple of weeks, I received the following email from Cisco
([EMAIL PROTECTED])...

I have no idea what the status of Cisco's application is. I hope them get it
approved soon, I have the 4 CCNP test to go!

Maybe as a group we could use our collective resources to expedite this
application?

Funny the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America is on the list
but not Cisco.

I called and they said to send it in and they may pay for it anyway.

RE: Redundancy between 6506 with a single sup. eng. each box? [7:25121]

2001-11-02 Thread Mcfadden, Chuck

My suggestion is to set up the access switches with 2 GBICs. One for Distro
switch B and one for Distro switch C. If one of the Distro switches fail,
you will automatically be routed to the other Distro switch. Again, make
sure you're trunking between the links so any VLANs will still work. Make
sure the specific ports for the Access Layer uplinks are set to the VLAN
that you want. If the one dies, then the other will kick in. You can apply
different weight to the links if you want to try to balance the traffic
between the two switches (probably a smart idea).

How big is this network??

Subject: Redundancy between 6506 with a single sup. eng. each box?
[7:25028]

Hi Group,

I have this scenario and wonder if it is possible to setup the topology with
redundancy. I have a CAT 6509 acting as the core switch (say switch A),
and 2 other CAT 6506 acting as the distribution switches (say switch B and
C). Both switch B and C have fiber uplinks to core switch A. Switches A
and B also have a redundant fiber between them. Regarding the hardware, The
core 6509 has 2 supervisor engines with dual MSFCs. The two 6506 have only
one supervisor engine and their MSFC DO NOT do routing at all.

My concern/question is that if the supervisor engine of one of the
distribution 6506 died, can access switches attached to this 6506 re-route
to the redundant link? I doubt this will work because the the supervisor
engine of the 6506 has all the configuration (including vlans) for the
ports/trunks attached to access switches died. Is there any way to to set
them up so that if the supervisor engine on one distribution 6506 dies, all
ports/trunks on this 6506 can still be OK with redundant link? Putting dual
supervisor engines on each 6506 will be my last solution. Thanks All!

Thomas N.

RE: Routing on a Stick [7:25025]

2001-11-02 Thread Mcfadden, Chuck

It's possible. Make sure the router has a 100BT interface and set up dot1q
between the router and the switch. use sub ints on the router to define the
Vans and your good to go.

I hope this is what you were asking.
