Subject: Yet another "CCIE R/S Written Passed" message...

Interesting turn of events today turned out to be. I purchased a voucher
long ago that expired 11/1/00, so I scheduled the exam for 10/30 thinking
I'd call and postpone my exam till I was ready(which you can do).

Unfortunately, you have to call 1 business day in advance. I had
forgotten the exam was today until I heard the familiar "duh-dah duh-dah
duh-dah" of the Palm Pilot alarm. Needless to say, I uttered several
explatives as the exam was in 30 minutes and I hadn't studied in more than
 a month.

 Anyways, score breakdown:

 Cisco Device operation 100
 Networking Theory 83
 Bridging and Lan Switching 70
 TCP/IP 75
 IP Routing Protocols 90
 Desktop Protocols 37 (-- yuck)
 Performance Management 66
 WAN 66
 LAN 100
 Security 33 (-- yuck)
 Multiservice 100

 Passed with a 76%.

Used the following for study materials.

Cisco Certification: Bridges, Routers, Switches for CCIEs
Cisco IOS Solutions for Network Protocols Volume I: IP
 Inside Cisco IOS Software Architecture
 Exam Cram ACRC
 Exam Cram CLSC
 Exam Cram CCIE R/S

And, I've got a good bit of experience in the field working for a tier I
ISP. At work, I work with anything from a 1605's to 12016's (switches
inclusive). Unfortunately (or fortunately, dependent upon your
viewpoint), we're a strictly IP environment; hence the 37 in Desktop
protocols. I'll have to work on that.

All in all, I'm quite happy considering that I haven't studied in a while.
I will certainly not be quite so haphazard with the scheduling of the lab!

I'd be happy to field any questions that don't put me in violation of the
 NDA.

 Regards,

 --phil

My recommendation for preparation materials for the CCIE written ( routing
 and switching 350-001 )

 1) Cisco's own web site. There is a WEALTH of excellent materials to be
found there, all FREE. Check under the CCIE section of career
 certifications.

 2) Jeff Doyle - TCP/IP routing. There is NO substitute

 3) The token ring white paper available for download FREE from
www.ccprep.com, written by Lou Rossi Sr.

 4) The RIF paper available for download FREE from our very own groupstudy
 site: http://www.groupstudy.com/notes/notepages/rif2.html
 Written by Fred Ingham

 5) Bassam Halabi - Internet Routing Architectures. Contains a bit of
fluff,
but has a lot of good BGP information and a lot of BGP configurations for
 study

 6) RFC's can't hurt: http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfcsearch.html

 7) Certification Zone www.certificationzone.com costs some money, but the
study materials and practice tests are worth the price ( disclosure - I
have
been compensated by Cert Zone for services rendered )

 8) CCIE Exam Cram ( Thomas and Benjamin ) Great way to send your last week
of review. The practice test is a very good indicator of the real thing.

 9) Last but not least - this mailing list. Used judiciously, it can and
will
provide you with almost all of what you need to know.

 Best wishes in your studies

With bias I will recommend the Sybex text. ;)
Priscilla's book is very good but is not a study guide
 - it is a solid reference and she is a good writer.
She developed most of the CID materials for Cisco. My
book is about 60% test prep to the exam and 40% today
 - note that the test is very old and somewhat dated. I
have a number of very nice reviews on Amazon as well,
 including Priscilla's kind words.

Hi group,

I have some questions .. or you can say many
:)

Q1) In order to be a good Network designer what
Skills should you need ..plus the "CCDA or CCIE Design" ? what are the
responsibility he have?

Q2) What are the type of job or you can say job
names for a "CCDA or CCDP" other than Network designer ..!!

Q3) For the CCIE Design tarck or exam,is true
thatyou do not need to know "CLI" commands (ex: BCSN, MCNS .. have
many IOS commands ..etc"
If Yes .. is it true that a person how Pass CCNA,
CCDA take the CID than jump to the CCIE Design tarck and pass it (write and Lab)
can he have the CCDP "waved" or both the CCNP and the CCDP? .. for the
CCIE R/S I have red he can wave the CCNP and take the CID in order to have CCDP
!!.

Q4) Anyone who have a good drawing skills "have
some good CAD skills ex:Autocad ver 9 to 2000 !! .." can this help him in his
work or no need for it .. (as a Network Designer).

Q5) I am working on the CCDA right now, but I did
not know why is the Deign track "CCDA, CID exam" is hard from the other support
"CCNA, CCNP" .. !! is it the Case study stuff !!
AsI can see no commands is need in the CCDA
(DCN Cisco book) is it the same with the CCDP and CCIE Design track .. But in
the Lab exams there are some names for routers .. any one take the CCIE Desing
Lab.

Q6) About the CCIE world wide any categories for
there numbers "ex: How many CCIE WAN, CCIE Design ..etc" I say about 35% to 40%
are CCIE R/S .. only a guess ..

* For the Cisco Design Certifications .. are these

Yes, there a few Cisco press books only .. I am after "Cisco press" !!

Ex: For the "Routing TCP/IP Book, by Jeff Doyle, Cisco Press .. I went to:
www.fatbrain.com it cost 70$ (the same as CiscoPress.com)
www.bookpool.com it cost ".."
www.booksamillion.com it cost 49$ or 44.1$ (if register .. Millionaire's
Club)
www.AllBooks4Less.com "last time i saw it" it was 30$ ONLY !!! (Good News) I
hope so !!
These prices to compare between these website .. you could find one book
with (more % off) .. need to make a surf ..

But did any one bought from this website "AllBooks4Less" .. need to buy some
large ref (cost 70$ per book) then let my relative ship the books (by DHL,
UPS ..etc) that cost is high .. because in my country you do not find Cisco
books (few books only) .. :)
I see the booksamillion price are good to ..

Stackable implies that one adds ports by adding additional switches.
Examples would be the 2900XL and 3500 series. Implication might also be
that
the switches can be managed as one device.
Modular switches add ports by adding "duh" modules or blades. Examples
would
 be the 4000, 5000, and 6000 series.

2) 65 questions and 105 min.
3) About the practice test .. i only used the CD that comes with the CCNA
640-507 Guide (Cisco Press) but you should have the ICND (Cisco press too)
.. i went to the 640-507 (using the ICRC book) i fall for 6 points, then i
went to the 640-407 (Need ICRC) i took 841/1000 (passing score is 755!!)
time is 90 min about 78 questions.
If you have the time to take the 640-407 before the end of july 2000 .. go
for it .. low passing score (755) ...
About the practice test (i think i could not help you with names of
softwares !! i am sorry ..)
Thanks again :)

TR supports multicast !!

2000-07-29 Thread Mohammed Hakim

Hello group,

About my last question: Does the Token Ring (IEEE
802.5) support Multicasts (sending packets to a group of devices)
..
I have two answre saying yes, i have asked an CCIE
.. he told me:

TR does not do multicast, IBM or IEEE. It does
use functional addresses kinda like multicast, butthere's a verylimited set
of these. IOS doc from Cisco on HSRP on Token Ring has some related
material.

Now i have 2 answers .. any one can help
..
Thanks

Just a note to thank you for all your help. The test was harder than I
 expected. 78 questions/90 minutes. I got a 841/1000. I used the sybex
and
cisco practice test to help prepare but found them not to helpful on the
real test. Most questions are multiple answer form and all expect you to
understand the concepts of what the questions are asking.

Now I am onto the CCNP any suggestions on books to use to study would be
 most appreciated.

Re: CCNA (Some help)

2000-07-29 Thread Mohammed Hakim

Hello and Thanks for the help in advance
..

First ..Sorry to be late I have passed the CCNA -
R/Swith 841/1000 .. I did not do to much reading .. I have used the CCNA
640-507 + ICRC (Cisco Press) .. "Not a very good score :( "Took it to fast
..!!)

Second: about the question which is faster a Switch
is faster then the Bridge .. let say the a the switch is using the
Store-and-forward method and it is in a large network (the switch) it have many
ports .. but the Bridge only like a real bridge that connect two points !! .. Is
the bridge are old fashion or extinct ??

Third: About the Does the Token Ring (IEEE 802.5)
support Multicasts as I said before in the ICRC book page 59 it said it support
Multicasts .. but another book the CCNA 640-507 Guide (New book) at page 721
question number 22 it said that: (( Multicast is not allowed on Token Ring;
broadcast is allowed on all LAN types ..etc)) I have finished the CCNA but I
need to know is the Token Ring for IBM is different From the IEEE 802.5 or what
?? Another thing is it true that I new Token Ring will be ready with 3 Gb/sec
ore more .. and idea.

**Last question if any one can help (general):
about the Nortel Certification .. Any one have the NNCNA the Nortel Networks Certified Network Architect (NNCNA)if
yes .. is it equal to the CCIE or even higher as the company (nortel say it) ..
To have it you need to have many certification and if you have an CCIE you will
have about 150 point (need about 500 or 550 point) but there certification Nortel Networks Certified Design Expert (NNCDE)if you have it you get about 150 or 200 (more than if you have
an CCIE !!) the ACSE (Alcatel) you have 150 points if you have MCSE you have
75!! and if you have CCNA you get 50 points !! .. you need to have many
certification 5 years exp. + 2 years in network design ... then you go to stage
2 test !!!the strange is
that the MCSE give more points than CCNA but many say that the CCNA is higher
than the MCSE (there is about +25 world wind MCSE .. in the MCSE2000 about
70-80% will go off !!) any idea ..!! is it good for a job to have many Network
certifications from (Cisco, Norte, Lucent, 3Com, Alcatel .. etc)

Thanks for your help .. :)

CCNA (Some help)

2000-07-24 Thread Mohammed Hakim

Hello group,

I have some questions if anyone can help me .. and
Thanks :)

1) In the ICRC Cisco book .. at page 47 (The
Ethernet/802.3 ..) 100BaseT4 is a 100-Mbps .. of Ethernet using four-pair
Category 3,4 or 5 cabling.
But in the Internetworking Technologies Handbook
(Second Edition) at page 103 (100BaseT4) .. run over existing Category 3 wiring,
.. four pairs of cabling .. uses the half-duplex 4T + signalling
scheme.
What is the Correct support cables category 3 only
or 3, 4 or 5.

2) what is the 100BaseT2 ?? (It use Category 3,4 or
5 UTP)

3) Does the Token Ring (IEEE 802.5) support
Multicasts (sending packets to a group of devices) in some book I red that
Multicasts is supported on an Ethernet or FDDI LAN (not allowed on Token Ring)
but broadcast is allowed on all LAN types. Take a note the in the ICRC cisco
book page 59 (Token Ring supports broadcasting and multicasting .. Multicasting
is used to send packets to special ...etc)
Any Help Please .. I am confuse

4) Is the Switch is faster then the Bridge ..
Why??

5) Is the IP Datagram header are important (Ex:
VERS, HLEN ... etc)

I hopeI can make it in the 640-407 exam
before it retire. I think some diffrence between 640-407 640-507
that the passing score is 755 (640-407) and 822 (640-507) any idea .. i hope it
does not be 850 !!!

Thanks ..

Hey, I barely got in with a 794, BUT I'm in there! Thanks to all who
helped out. I used all the usual CISCO PRESS and Todd's books. I bought
a Sybex E-trainer for $110 (had to buy it local) and used it once,
researched the rest. I am among the confused though about
whether I'm supposed to go online to sign an agreement, thought I did
that on the test? I think it was the survey first, then Career Cert,
last...I think. I'm headed for CCNP track, if I win the lottery.
Without money, I'll go for CCDA to stall for some time. :)
