Re: Admin distance on directly connected

2001-02-05 Thread Saša Milic

IMHO, it is not correct. Have you checked it ? I mean,
not only by looking at 'show ip route' output, but really
checking that route has AD of 0 ?

It is true that it is considered as directly connected, but
it still has AD of one, and it can be easily proved ! Just
add 'debug ip routing' before you add route, and you will
see that it will be added into routing table with AD of 1.

If you add two routes, for example:

  ip route 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0 ethernet0
  ip route 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0 10.10.20.1

which one will be added into routing table (considering that
you have 10.10.20.1 route in routing table, and that ethernet0
interface is up)? Guess what ? Both will be there ! Of course,
both will be there 'cause both have the same AD (1)!

  Saša

No. When you telnet from xterm to the router, that is still the telnet
protocol, not XRemote. XRemote is used to compress/decompress XWindows
traffic over slow serial lines.

maximum speed of serial interface on WIC-1T is 2Mbps. Maximum speed
of ports on NM-8A/S, working in sync mode, is 128Kbps. That could

Yee,

when you ping serial interface from the router, icmp-echo packets
travel over serial link to the other side where they are forwarded
to your router. Then, your router respond with icmp-echo-response
packets which travel the same path !

To clear this, suppose you have routers A and B on a WAN link:

A <--> B

What is happening is:

1. You start ping on A
2. A send icmp-echo packet to B
3. B forwards packets to A
4. A answers and send echo-response to B
5. B forwards packets to A
6. You got '!' on A

So, access-lists on the other side of the WAN link play a role !

Hope this helps.
