RE: First Impressions - CCIE Practical Studies [7:32237]
HI, I received my copy last week, here in the UK. I was given a good review before I bought the book (Thanks Brad Ellis). I am happy with the content of the book and the LAB's at the end are well worth the price of the book (and more). I have only found spelling mistakes (like form instead of from), but I have not completed it yet. But, saying that, I am glad I was not asked to author a book that would have such a wide audience and a list of reviewers (all those that use groupstudy). Its a good book and I am waiting for Practical Studies Vol 2. I didn't read that in Chuck's post. However, on the same topic, I just got my copy yesterday. I bought mine from Pearson Education for $48.75 with $7.00 shipping ordinary mail to Canada. It took 2 weeks which was fine with me. Like Chuck I am immediately impressed by the authors/reviewers. All told - 9 - CCIEs. I am just getting through chapter one but I have perused the appendices and Chapter 18 (the timed labs). I'm excited with what looks like is there. Can't wait to devote more time to it. I saved about $25 on the price of the book, but the delivery took over 3 1/2 weeks! I don't think there was even a stamp or postmark on the media mail package, so I have no idea how it arrived I'd just as soon pay Amazon's price and get normal shipping (plus my company re-imburses me for all books I buy anyways). The book looks pretty good, but some people have told me that the book is still simple compared to the lab iteslf. But all in all, it does give you a blueprint of topics to study, then you can branch off in each subject for more in-depth studies in other books, etc. Chuck Larrieu wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... Just got my copy. Reading the About the Authors section alone is impressive. All those associated with the book are CCIE's. I look forward to discovering if there are any errors in the book. One would hope not, given the credentials of the writers and reviewers, one of whom was the Halifax Lab Proctor for several years. So far I have browsed all of the first chapter The Key Components for Modeling an Internetwork This chapter covers in good detail all those basic questions - the config register, configuring a router as a frame switch, password recovery, show and debug ( called the big show and the big d respectively, throughout the book. ) building a terminal server, and much much more. This alone tells me that this book might be a good investment for those just starting out, as well as those prepping for the CCIE Lab. Sure, all of this information is available elsewhere, but with this book, it is in one place, easily located, and clearly explained. There is even a section about configuring networking on windoze computers. Considering the number of raw beginners who are coming into the certification process, this is helpful. I'll have more comments after I have had a chance to look at the good stuff. RE: copy startup-config running-config [7:29621]
Hi Theo, Are you using new IOS or is it old code, pre 12 ios. Strange thing is, even though not a cisco related topic, we have had some of our Enterasys SSR's fail with the same command. THe SSR's crashed within an hour or so of issuing the command.Enterasys engineering reported that the SSR crashed due to us issuing the copy startup to active , and have issued a general release note saying they are removing that functionality from their code (equivalent to copy start run). The SSR is a product developed by ex cisco engineers(a company called Yago). If you know what I am talking about, you will see that they have almost the same CLI (a command is issued on the SSR to make it use cisco based commands.). Try Cisco TAC and see what they come up with. Sorry I can't be of more help, but here is what I found on Cisco's web for 12.2 caveats A Cisco router experiences a memory leak when policy maps are attached to interfaces, and you use the copy startup-config running-config or copy running-config startup-config command. Workaround: Detach all policy maps from the interfaces before using the copy startup-config copy running-config startup-config, and then reattach the policy maps to the interfaces. FW: CCNP Switching - Mapping MAC address to IP Multicast [7:10]
MSG Re-posted -Original Message- From: Thompson, Robert D Sent: 12 December 2001 08:10 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: CCNP Switching - Mapping MAC address to IP Multicast [7:10] HI Sergio, The best way I can explain this is in the following way Remember to convert the IP address given to binary. The reason for this is to convert binary to hex (you need to know how to convert binary to hex, thats the key here) Example (first convert to binary) 147.184.9.9 = 10010011.10111000.1001.1001 now convert to Hex, but only the 23 bits (on of the rules) , starting from the right, and forget the rest (as you need to pre-pend 01 00 5E to your answer, also an IANA rule...) 10010011.10111000.1001.1001 Do Not Convert Convert = in binary 0111000.1001.10001 now convert to hex = in hex using 8421 code to get hex (break binary groups up into groups of 4, then convert to hex) = 0111000 = 38 in hex =1001 = 09 in hex (or 9) 0111000.1001.1001 =1001 = 09 in hex (or 9) = 38.09.09 = with pre-pend of 01.00.5E =01.00.5E.38.09.09 (this answer is your hex answer for ip address 147.184.9.9 mapped to multicast mac address) This is in your notes on CCNP switching(below is a snip taken from cisco web site) Ethernet MAC Address Mapping The IANA owns a block of Ethernet MAC addresses that start with 01:00:5E in hexadecimal format. Half of this block is allocated for multicast addresses. The range from 0100.5e00. through 0100.5e7f. is the available range of Ethernet MAC addresses for IP multicast. This allocation allows for 23 bits in the Ethernet address to correspond to the IP multicast group address. The mapping places the lower 23 bits of the IP multicast group address into these available 23 bits in the Ethernet address. But i cant understand it. I dont understand how to map MAC address to IP Multicast addresses. Can u help me? Thanks in advice. OSPF Router ID and IP Addresses [7:24003]
Hi All, Can anybody clear something up for me. In OSPF when selecting the Router ID, what Interface will OSPF choose as the Router ID on this particular router. For example Interface Ethernet 0 IP address 10.1.1.1 255.0.0.0 Interface Ethernet 1 IP address 172.16.100.1 255.255.0.0 Interface Ethernet 2 IP address 193.221.200.1 255.255.255.0 rest of config not listed for this discussion and IP address structure made up for the discussion (in this case I won't use a loopback interface, purely to discuss Router ID and IP address considerations) I understand its the highest IP address that will win, in this case will it be 10.1.1.1? or will it be 193.221.200.1 I will appreciate any comments Cheers Rob Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=24003t=24003 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In addition their power supplies were suspect and we were forever returning their S24's and S48's, if it was not for that then it was their ASICS and Ports packing up. Once one went others soon followed. We had software problems with Black Diamond Blades and you had to be very careful what blades and software you mixed which was never made to clear until it all went wrong. What we now need to do is learn the other companies products so we have the edge on the situation. With some minor tweaks we should be able to support other equipment. This applies to all pc environments. The basics are the same, the rules - different order. The market conditions are really depressing right now but that does not mean that people give up their dreams and stop working towards them . If you look at all the certifications like CNE and MCSE they all had their better days and anyone who had them was king but not anymore .That is the certification market for you . Every certification has a life and it is upto the Company to give its certification a longer life by making it more and more difficult and I guess Cisco has done a commendable job on that for the past 8 years but I think what cisco needs right now is more people using thier products out their in the market so that they don't get crushed by the competition . So with that said , teh CCIE might still be able to get you in a lot of positions and then its upto you .
