CCSP - 9E0-131 CSI Exam [7:60782]

2003-01-09 Thread Zeke Gibson
Hiyas Group,

Hope your new year is off to a good start! I was hoping for insight into the
9E0-131 CSI exam. I have all the CSS-1 books I used in the past, plus some
additional Cisco Press titles covering security topics, and a copy of the
SAFE SMR document. Is anyone else working on this exam? Anyone found a
review? I can't seem to find anything out there yet, exam has only been live
for a few days. Any tips would be appreciated, I'm testing on the 11th.
Thanks,

I got my CSS1 back in May, I chose to take IDSPM.

I used the Cisco Press book CSIDS, and an eval copy of Cisco Secure Policy
Manager. I honestly do not know how much longer the CSIDS exam will
be available, I'd suggest filling out an online customer service request
form and asking Cisco:

http://ciscocert.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ciscocert.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php?p_sid=XE1esmmgp_lva=p_sp=p_li=

Good luck on finishing up your CSS1!

From what I gather on their website; Cisco is phasing out CSIDS and
replacing it with IDSPM. There are no books titled IDSPM.
 So I have 2 questions:
A)is the CSIDS book a valid study guide for IDSPM?
B)If they are phasing it out how long do I have to take the
 CSIDS?

 Thanks in advance JDR

re: Dell switches [7:51160]

2002-08-10 Thread Zeke Gibson

Hi all,

I've worked with several of the Dell PowerConnect switches, a few of my
customers chose to purchase them because of the attractive price, after
all it is an access switch (the 2124's) I don't have much to say other
than that I havn't run into any issues, they have a slick web interface
(which doesn't excite me but the IT manager-types seem to like the
swizzy pointy clicky foo) and they perform well, but of course it's
no Cisco. In all fairness I'd have to say that they are excellent for what
they are, cheap access switches. I work with Cisco, Extreme, and Foundry
switches on a daily basis so all I really care about is my distro / core
layers and I'm not aware of anything comparable to the Dell at that price
point (except mebbe netgear, and they aren't fully manageable to my
knowledge)
One of these days I will crack the cover and see what's under the hood,
and put some in-house switch slamming tools to task and see how it
compares to a cat. 2924XL, but again, it's a cheap access switch so I
personally refrain from knocking on them too hard. Enjoy the weekend all

on a completely different tangent - if anyone out there has worked with
the Cricket stats package you might appreciate the cool foo my co-worker
came up with at http://stats.sonic.net/cricket

(this time I'm really off to lunch)

Recommendations on CSPFA exam? [7:29715]

2001-12-19 Thread Zeke Gibson

Hiyas,

Thanks to all who provided tips for MCNS, I passed on Saturday ;)

I tried to locate PIX-related material for CSPFA, the only book
that looked good was Cisco Secure PIX Firewalls from
Cisco Press, ISBN: 1587050358

It hasn't been released yet, should be out the 21st according to Amazon.
I'm hoping my copy will show sometime after Christmas.

Has anyone used the Boson tests for this exam?

Has anyone run across any other references that were helpful?

I have a PIX-506 and a PIX-501 available for practice, unfortunately of
course both of these
models are fixed-configuration 2 interface only, so no DMZ support. I've
been working on them
for the past few days and have configured IPSec between them both, worked on
acccess lists /static / conduits / logging, configured about everything I
could think of before I got a bit bored.

I've deployed a total of 7 PIX's, some 515-UR's as well, and I scored
perfect on the PIX sections on
the MCNS exam, but I'm hoping the Cisco book will have some good scenarios
to practice. Thanks
for your comments and Happy Holidays all!

-Zeke

Preparing for MCNS [7:28480]

2001-12-07 Thread Zeke Gibson

Hello All,

First off let me thank everyone who participates on this list, very helpful
folks ;)

Now down to business, I am getting close to taking the MCNS exam, and so far
I have only used the Cisco Press book Managing Cisco Network Security, I
read it through 3 times and feel I have a good grasp on the material. I also
have read over numerous white papers and documents from CCO which I thought
would be helpful to me. I have the Cisco exam blueprint and have tried my
best to map my efforts to the blueprint. I am also planning on purchasing
the Boson MCNS practice exam, and have checked the resources available at
www.cramsession.com, mostly the posts related to the exam and the Exam
Cram document. Any other helpful books, sites, software that may be useful?

Also, without breaking NDA of course, anyone know if there is any overlap
between MCNS and and PIX exam? Thanks in advance for any advice,

-Zeke

 Hi all.

What are some of the reasons why a person would choose a PIX solution
rather than a good router with the the right IOS for security?

From what I've read on Cisco's site, there does not seem to be the huge
gap between using a router as a firewall solution vs. using a PIX, as some
 people make it sound.

One last thing...for the life of me, I can't find what PIX stands for!
Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Re: Wireless LAN Specialization [7:27312]

2001-11-26 Thread Zeke Gibson

Hiyas,

When my company went after the Wireless LAN specialization, they sent myself
and another engineer to the GigaWave training, and provided us with a few
AP's, 1 bridge, and a handful of antennas. We looked everywhere for practice
exams and came up empty, we ended up using the (2) manuals from the training
extensively, and frankly, failed the exam once before passing. It was
tricky, some of the questions were not worded appropriately in my opinion,
and as I recall a few items weren't covered in the training manuals. We also
extensively used the WLAN documentation on CCO, to fill in the gaps so to
speak. This was about 6 months ago, if anyone finds any more resources
please do share them as I need to put 2 more engineers through the exams
shortly. Thanks,

Hello,

Mine just showed up today! I got the 3DES/10 user bundle and am configuring
it as I write this. I will be deploying it at my home behind my Cisco 827
ADSL Router. So far it feels just like a 506, came with 6.11 loaded, anxious
to get it up and running so I may configure a VPN to another PIX. Let me
know if I can be of any assistance, I've configured several 2 interface
506's and 515's, simple NAT configurations, but have not worked with IPSec,
etc. yet. I am working on MCNS right now.
