Re: VTP modes Server/Client vs Transparent [7:57650]

2002-11-19 Thread Zim
Like most networking problems it depends. How large is your switch domain?
Are you doing End to End VLANs or Local? How large is your STP domain now?
Will it grow larger? Here a link I would start with
http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/473/21.html ( stater for VTP)
then hit this one
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/so/neso/lnso/cpso/gcnd_wp.htm (covers
GigE Design)
Design solutions are usually need and resource driven...as for standards
they change(some daily). JMHO

Network is migrating from ATM to Gigabit Ethernet. Transparent mode was
default VTP for all distribution layer switches. We had hubs for all
access
layer switches. With the new migration to Gigabit switches would be at all
access layer buildings. Would it be beneficial to run transparent abroad
or
 a server/client model.

 Thanks

Re: CCIE Lab test price? [7:55487]

2002-10-13 Thread Zim

Part of becoming a CCIE starts with conducting research. GroupStudy is for
those who have done research but are fuzzy on application of theory or want
to add to the dynamic of the discussion of theory as it pertains to
Internetworking. You don't waste the time of Howard C. Berkowitz,
Priscilla Oppenheimer or Nigel Taylor with trivial questions that are
answered with 10 seconds of research on Cisco's site. Having said all that
here is how you become a CCIE. Good Luck you may just need it.

Anybody could tell me how much do you pay for try the ccie lab?
I4ve heard that for written test the price is $300, but for the lab I
never
 heard about.

 thanks,

Re: Nanog Post: redistribute bgp considered harmful [7:54961]

2002-10-12 Thread Zim
I like this question. It seems to ponder the worth of a command based on the
assumption that the command only exist to serve a purpose other than a real
world application. Will an ISP ever need to redistribute bgp routes into the
routing table of any IGP? Well like so much in Internetworking, it depends.
But to take away something based solely on an assumption and perhaps a
limited view from your side of the world makes no sense. In short the
flexability should stay. Used or not, options are always good to have. Just
my 4cents (adjusted for inflation)

 All,
This was a recent post on the Nanog list which I thought could get
some interest on the list. Basically, the poster is questioning the
relevance or real world requirements/need for certain commands, in this
case
 it's the redistribute bgp command.

 Here's the original post...

Should the Service Provider version of routing software include the

real-world use for redistributing the BGP route table into any IGP.

If the command was removed (or included a Are your sure? question) what
would the affect be on ISPs, other than improving reliability by
stopping network engineers from fubaring a backbone?

 Thoughts!
