full meshed ip unnumbered network

2000-06-04 Thread cisco cabanaboy

here is the design:

  ETHERNET
 |
   1XXX

  /\
 / \
  2XXX 3XXX
  -
 / \
 ETHERNET ETHERNET

the three routers are seperated by point to point wan
links, my questions involve the pros/cons of
addressing the wan links using various techniques.

1. make each p2p link its own /30 network
2. make all p2p links use addresses out of the same
pool (i.e. 10.0.0.1, .2, .3, .4, .5, .6)
3. ip unnumbered e0

i think that solutions 2 & 3 would cause problems if
one link came down, because only a portion of the
subnet is down if you were doing per packet load
balanceing, then every other packet would drop...

as a variation, you colud take the link down between
routers 2 & 3, and make the other p2p's frame relay
links, then have a logical full mesh using pvc's...

Comments please..

load-sharing

2000-06-06 Thread cisco cabanaboy

ok... here goes...

as i understand it, if you have multiple routes with
the same Specifity, Admin distance, and Metric then
(most?) dynamic routing protocols will load balance...
and if you add yet another static route to that
destination, (not necisarrilly with the same
specifity/admin dist/metric) then that route will also
load balance...

jeez.

- i do understand that routing protocols do not really
"load balance, the simply chose possible Load
balanceing canidates.

jeez*2

e: Loopback - why needed ?

2000-06-06 Thread cisco cabanaboy

if you did no keepalives on an ethernet it would do
the same thing (despite caveats) would it not?

also, is there any scenario that you would have /
advertise a route to loop0?
XX

A loopback interface will only go down if the entire
router goes down.
Loopback interfaces should be used for OSPF, BGP, and
DLSw+. For instance,
when a loopback interface is used on a router using
OSPF, the highest
number IP address on a loopback interface is used as
the Router ID. If
the Router ID was on a physical interface and that
interface failed, the
OSPF process could experience a Router ID change. If
the router has a new
Router ID, the other routers will treat it as a new
and different router.
This result would be that all OSPF routers affected
would have inaccurate
information in their topological database.

frame-relay design

2000-06-15 Thread cisco cabanaboy

If you had 3 locations in a hub and spoke topology,
then you would want two pvcs going to each
site...(using subinterfaces), how do the numbers
change as you add remote sites...

e.g. if you add the 4th site, do you have to add a pvc
to every other site?, totalling 3 pvcs/subinterfaces ?

so would that mean if you had 100 sites it would
require n-1 (99) pvcs/dlcis/subints per location...?

i may be way off
