RE: post CCIE written clarification

2001-01-24 Thread dwhitley

I think it would be safe to say that I could configure point to point (using
subinterfaces) over a nbma topology.
NBMA is more generic terminology than point to multipoint. For example ATM
is a NBMA technoloy, yet it does not have to be set up in a point to
multipoint configuration.

Got the written out of the way and am now going back to the basics to help
start preparing for the lab. One thing I cannot get clear and can't find any
good references for on CCO is the difference (if there is one) between point
to multipoint and nbma topologies. I have discussed this at length with my
peers and am still drawing a blank. If anyone can clarify this or refence a
good URL it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Question about Napt

Normally yes. But the unsual situation you originally described, would
require that the applications use the session layer to establish who gets
what data. This would have to be carried in the same TCP connnection.
Following the OSI model

Applicaiton

Session (session multiplexing would occur here)
Transport (NAT or PAT occur here)

RE: Early Token release

2001-01-26 Thread dwhitley

There can only be 1 token on a ring at any time. The confusion comes from
thinking that a data frame contains a token it does not. A host takes the
token off the ring and transmits a data frame, when its done tramiting the
data frame (using early token release) it then returns the token to the ring
before it has removed its last data frame.

Hi,
Please solve my confusion for this as I am getting different answers from
different resources..

Early token release

(1) allows one token and more than one frames.
(2) Allows more than one token and more than one frames.
(3)allows more than two tokens and one data frame.

Thanks a lot in advance...

RE: Tacacs+/Radius

The Radius server for NT is on the free option pack CD for nt4.0 the Radius
server is called Internet Authentication Service (IAS) or some such name.
It can only be loaded on NT 4 Server not workstation.

I have been using it for remote dial up along with a Shiva Netmodem, for
about 3 years and haven't had any problems after the installation. This is
a limited function version. The real version comes with,I think?, Site
Server. The main difference is you can only use the default nt domain for
users, with the full version you can select different domains for user
selection.

RE: CCIE Case Scenario

2001-01-12 Thread dwhitley

I found in the Roosevelt Giles: All-in-one Cisco CCIE study guide the
following statement
The three bits RRR, are the reservation bits. These bits are initially set
to 0 by any transmitting station. So, when the currently circulating frame
is returned to the originating station and a new token is generated, the PPP
bits, the priority bits, are set to the RRR bits value.

The following statement is my interpretation of the next paragraph: It goes
on to say that a controller looks at the T (token bit) and the PPP (priority
bits) to determine if it can seize the token and transmit data. There is no
mention of looking at the RRR bits to determine if a controller can seize
the token.

Subject: CCIE Case Scenario

I've been on it since 4am. Still can't figure that one out ...

>From Cisco:

"After the token is claimed and changed to an information frame, only
stations with priority higher than the trasmitting station can reserve the
token for the next pass around the network. When the next token is
generated, it includes the highest priority of the reserving station.
Stations that raise a token's priority level must reinstate the previous
lower priority level after their transmission is complete"

CASE SCENARIO:

I have 3 stations: A , B, and C Their resective priorities are 1 , 4, and 5.
Station X Y Z have priority 0
Station A grabs the token (the priority at the time was 0) and put data on
it. While it goes around the ring, station B reserves the token for itself.
When the token comes back to station A (we assume X was the destination), A
creates a new token with priority 4 and no reservation set.

QUESTIONS:

Question: Is the last statement of my case scenario correct or is it the
other way arround? (A creates a new token ring with the previous priority: 0
and set the reservation to 4).

It depends on the exact model, but in general NO.  Pairgain was never really
a CSU/DSU company, but rather a HDSL T1 repeater/extender company.  They did
make a few models that would take T1 on the network side, but I don't
remember if these had v.35 options on the DSU side.

Is this a two or a four wire version?  If it's a four wire, then it may be
possible.  You can always try it.  If it doesn't work, then do something
else.

Here's my thoughts
DS-1 = 24 DS0's so 24 x 64KB = 1.536MB the actual DS-1 rate

Framing = 8KB + 1.536MB = 1.544MB the actual T-1 rate

Title: RE: Any X.25 pros out there?

The 'translate x25' command takes the incoming x.25 connection request and translates it to an outgoing ip connection ( the created connection is full duplex ) but you would also need a 'translate tcp' command to enable incoming tcp connections to initiate an outgoing x.25 connection.

This question may not prove to be so difficult. I am in a discussion (a nice
way to say an arguement) and I am so hardheaded I will not let down.
The big question is whether in an X.25 configuration when there is a
translate statement set does it indicate that when a packet coming into that
router destined for X.121 address it will be translated to
IP's in this pool.

or

Does the translate statement say any packets destined for this IP pool
will be translated to this X.121.

or

are we both painfully wrong?

or
are there no people working with this old decrepid technology to worry about
it?

I am using a CD dated october 1999 on windows 2000.  I did have some problems.  My question is, are you installing the Verity CD web publisher using the default settings (it will install on the C: drive)
