cisco mailing list in Japan

2001-03-25 Thread Marcus Jensen

Started March 23, 2001. This user group is for Cisco professionals or
learners living and working in Japan. There is a Cisco sponsored mailing
list that announces Tokyo meetings, but posting to it is restricted to Cisco
employees, so I created this group. All official Cisco sponsored user groups
meetings in Tokyo will be posted here as well. Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] to
be put on that list.

Re: How to get the activation key for my clone Pix? [7:36561]

2002-02-26 Thread Marcus Jensen

I don't think he needs to worry about reprise from Cisco if it is just for
study.

I'm interested in this too but from a tinkering "how does it work"
perspective. There are lots of confusing things about the pix software
install/upgrades/downgrades and then add in the activation keys and serial
numbers. Not even close to the confusion of trying to upgrade catalyst
supervisor engines from 2 to 5 and having to go one step at a time. Ah, if
all things were easy like 2500 images :)

All in One ccie and other books wanted. [7:30405]

2001-12-28 Thread marcus jensen

If you have the 2nd edition of this lab guide by Stephen Hutnik and would
like to sell it, please contact me. Don't much mind if it is used, just
needs the CD and preferably few or erasable markings. I'm also interested in
some books for remote access and support.

I also want a Emutel Solo isdn simulator.

Thank you,

Marcus

mentor back? [7:31964]

2002-01-15 Thread marcus jensen

Isn't this the group that went bankrupt and took money with them from lots
of students for classes they paid for? There were lots of posts from angry
students here a bit ago, I wonder if their concerns have been address since
mentor is now back in business?

Re: is this 4700M bad? [7:20630]

2001-09-20 Thread marcus jensen

I tried Sean's method, but still nothing. I looked at the CPU to re-seat it
like Frank suggested, but it doesn't have a release lever like a motherboard
CPU. I'm a bit weary to just pull at it, is this indeed what you do?

Thanks

Re: is this 4700M bad? [7:20630]

2001-09-20 Thread marcus jensen

Well, I've got some progress. I can see the 4700 from another router using
show cdp nei. So probably the sub25pin is bad. It's brand new though. I'll
try to round up another somewhere.

I've got a different problem now. It's got three 2 ethernet port modules in
it. I wanted to confirm they all work, so plug the ethernet cable in all,
but only the first module works. Looking at the front of the router, there
are three lights for each of the modules. I assume they light up to confirm
it's recognized, but only the module I could confirm with show cdp is lit
up. Is it in fact so that these should be lit all the time? I've reseated
all the memory/flash/and these modules, but no change in the light status.
Thanks, Marcus

memory issue on pre rev 1.6 cat5 sup [7:23752]

2001-10-21 Thread marcus jensen

I remember reading an older post here about a certain memory issue on older
supI cards with hardware revision 1.6 or older. Something about needing a
special HC or something dram upgrade. I found the article on CCO specifying
the problem. Does anyone know where I can get this special memory?

Thanks,Marcus

compatibility module switching between 2901 5000 [7:25182]

2001-11-03 Thread marcus jensen

I've read here and on Cisco's website that the 2901 is Exactly a cat5 with
sup1 and a ws-5213, this is fine. BUT, I've got conflicting reports from
groupstudy posts whether a ws-5213 can do ISL trunking or not, thusly
everyone goes for ws-5213a. I can't seem to confirm this on Cisco's website.

Can anyone confirm this. And, does this mean the ws-5213 inside a 2901 also
can't do ISL, or are there some 2901s with ws-5213a. I've only seen two, and
both were just ws-5213.

This is off a 2901

1 2 WS-X5009 003973541 1.8 2.1 2.1 2.1(6)
2 12 WS-X5213 003977192 1.0 1.4 2.1(6)

Thank you
Marcus

RE: CCNP Advice [7:26053]

2001-11-12 Thread marcus jensen

I personally found Todd's CCNA book one of the better technical books I've
read, so also bought routing based on that. I have found it to be one of the
worst books I've read. His discussion on OSPF was completely confusing until
I read Doyle's book which was given to me and which you don't need for the
routing test, just get Cisco press CCNP books. Since I bought this book of
Todd's, I didn't want to spend more money on the Cisco CCNP routing book, so
I used Doyle's and an older Cisco 403 routing book to clear the confusion
that Todd's routing book had and used Todd's book mainly as a study road
map. I have a friend who also quit Todd's book halfway through, sold the
whole sybex series and bought the Cisco series. I think Sybex books are good
in general, but the Cisco CCNP series can't be beat. I tried to buy them off
my friend I mentioned, but he wants to keep them as future reference, as I
will never open the Todd routing book again.

Where to get MEM-C5K-16M-CUSTOM [7:26088]

2001-11-13 Thread marcus jensen

This comes up once every quarter or so. I need Cat5000 sup1 16mb ram, but I
have an older hardware revision Sup, so need this special MEM-C5K-16M-CUSTOM
part number apparently only available from Cisco. But, I remember reading in
this list a long time ago that just need " and your fine" except I don't
remember the . Does anyone know where to get this memory cheap or
details of 3rd party memory?

Thank you,

Marcus

RE: Where to get MEM-C5K-16M-CUSTOM [7:26088]

2001-11-13 Thread marcus jensen

Unfortunately not so in this case. There is documented problems with Sup I
with hardware 1.6 or earlier. The cheap Kingston and standard third party
options for Sup I don't work. I have found one place that sells the official
version quite cheap though just today on the net, but looking for 3rd party
and cheaper version as well.

RE: Where to get MEM-C5K-16M-CUSTOM [7:26088]

2001-11-14 Thread marcus jensen

I got an email from them.

We don't have the MEM-C5K-16M-CUSTOM in stock. As a reference we list part
numbers and descriptions for easy reference. You can see our current
inventory at: www.networksurplus.ca.

I looked at the page again, and indeed it is just a reference page and not
in stock. Guess back to looking for 3rd party cheap custom dram.

I'm sure I remember reading a post about pre 1.6 sup1s just need a 16mb dram
module with XXX and it will work, unfortunately I don't remember what XXX
was and can't find it in the archive. Something maybe like need dram module
with HL or something. If anyone knows, please post.

comments about CCIE power session [7:48811]

2002-07-14 Thread marcus jensen

For those who were able to attend, do you have any comments about the power
session. Any tidbits about the change in lab. In particular I am curious for
budget purposes if we can get away with just one layer 3 switch and one
layer 2 switch for mock up labs, OR will TWO layer 3 switches be highly
recommended?
