ISDN BRI Load threshold question...

2000-09-24 Thread vlan2

interface dialer 5
dialer string 5551212
dialer load-threshold 127

I understand that this will bring up the second B channel when the load
reaches 50% but my question is:

How does it know what number to dial? I have only configure one number
using the dialer string.

How does my router know what number belongs to the second B channel?

Many thanks..vlan2

Re: CDP Confusion

2000-09-23 Thread vlan2

CDP does not "find fellow devices", it is more like a beacon, periodically
anouncing itself to anyone who would listen. If you would like to listen,
type in:

show cdp neighbors

If CDP is enabled on other Cisco network devices, you will see something
like:

Capability Codes: R - Router, T - Trans Bridge, B - Source Route Bridge
   S - Switch, H - Host, I - IGMP, r - Repeater

 Device IDLocal Intrfce HoldtmeCapability Platform
Port ID
 069031368(5505a)Vlan1 131 T B S WS-C5500
7/1
 069031369(5505b)Vlan1 131 T B S WS-C5500
7/2
 069031275(5505c)Vlan1 131 T B S WS-C5500
7/3
 069031219(5505d)Vlan1 131 T B S WS-C5500
7/4

In the above example, it found a switch. If it finds a router, and the
interface has an IP address assigned to it and the interface is up, CDP will
indicate the IP address of that interface. CDP only shows you Cisco devices
that are neighbors, you can't see the entire networkor can you?

You can telnet to the neighboring router, then from that router, enter "sh
cdp nei" and see who is adjacent to *that* router, and telnet to them and do
it over and over until you have mapped the entire network! But wait, the
downside is it doesn't always work. ;(

To see CDPs variables enter: sh cdp

  Global CDP information:
Sending CDP packets every 60 seconds
Sending a holdtime value of 180 seconds

Even though Cisco calls it a "discovery" protocol, if there is going to be
any discovery, you are going to have to do the work.

Re: Sprint wire management class

2000-09-15 Thread vlan2

I got AMP certified in cat5 and fiber and administration...It's sort of a
joke, ya do it every 2 years. Face facts, when you are persuing Cisco
Certification, everything else looks "half assed".

Don't forget to study this weekend everybody!

Novell is very fond of things that take 60 seconds.
Almost everything IPX does, takes 60 seconds...

Re: Salary Surveys

2000-08-19 Thread vlan2

Are you sure?

I just now clicked on "search" under the Salary heading,
entered the word "Cisco" as the language/platform and got about 30
returns.  Janet runs a nice site, I always visit the message board, lot's
of good info for contractors and consultants.

If you want to know the rates, they want you
to pay $25 bucks to down load.  Surposedly you can plug in your
parameters and they give you a ball park $ value.  They've got it
programmed to "unable to find your catagory".
And then they tell you for
  $25.00

I have been tasked by my HR people to find
out what sort of money Senior Network Administrators should get paid! I
was wondering if anybody has any related articles or links to collect
some information.

I am not wondering what people make
specifically , I am looking for averages in areas. The areas I am
interested in are Canada and the US but international would also be
OK.
