Moreover, the 6509 complains (cat-os) if it hears BPDU's on a port configured for Portfast . That port is automatically, immediately disabled. It does not actually disable spanning tree. PortFast causes a port to enter the forwarding state immediately, bypassing the listening and learning states. Spanning tree is still enabled and able detect loops. Re: Cat 2950-24 [7:37374]
Again, just a minor correction. Portfast DOES NOT disable STP on the port. It just causes the port to go from disabled to forwarding as soon as the link is sensed by the port. STP still is active on the said port. So when a loop is detected after the port is set to "forwarding", STP will change the port status to "blocking" state. Since this "portfast" works ONLY the first time the port initializes, this also proves that STP is enabled as this port will transition through the entire blocking to forwarding states when the loop disappears. Hope this clears up the topic. The portfast command does not turn STP off. The following is from CCO: Cisco added a feature named "portfast" or "fast-start," which means the STP for this port will assume that the port is not part of a loop and will immediately move to the forwarding state, without going through the blocking, listening, or learning states. This command does not turn STP off. It just makes STP skip a few (unnecessary in this circumstance) steps in the beginning on the selected port. These connections may cause physical loops and it is very important that spanning tree go through the full initialization procedure in these situations. A spanning tree loop can bring your network down. OT:RE: Cat 2950-24 [7:37374]
Reminds me of a funny story about this.. I was new to Cisco eq, and switches in general. I searched and searched to find out why this was Happening to me. Finally found the answer of port fast. Was I happy ...until the next morning when The config was blank and problem was back. I put the port fast back in and all was well until the next morning. Same thing kept happening for 2 weeks. I was going nuts trying to figure out what was going on until someone Was kind enough to tell me about the mysterious command " write memory ". That fixed the problem for a week or So until one morning I get a call that nobody can log in again. I go to telnet into the switch and I cant reach it. Hm. Quick walk to the maintenance cage revealed the answer. You see this was a new enclosure that didn't have power directly to it yet, So an extension cord was run to power the 2924's. Turns out that were we plugged into was the location that the night maintenance man Also happened to plug he coffee maker into. Seems he forgot to plug it back in when he left for the night and the cabinet was dead. Since the Building Manager AND the Maintenance Manager all happened to be connected to those switches power was ran that afternoon Like I had originally requested. I bought the night guy a thing of coffee for the assistance! RE: Cat 2950-24 [7:37374]
>From my knowledge if you use this command (spanning-tree portfast) on a switch port it actually disable spanning tree for that port you should only do this if pc's are connected. So if you enable portfast you disable spanning tree for that port, if you disable portfast you enable spanning tree for that port. What this does with it enabled and a pc connected to it, it will keep the port from going through all the spanning tree phases you know like learning, listening, blocking etc it will take the switch 60 seconds to figure all this out before it starts passing traffic to that port. If portfast is enabled then it does not go through those phases and will only take approximately 3 seconds before traffic is passing according to Cisco. Someone please correct me if I am wrong here or missed something. Try turning spanning tree off for the port being used on the Cisco switch. RE: Cat 2950-24 [7:37374]
you have a delay of 50 seconds or so because cisco uses the spanning tree protocol on most switches. This causes the port to not activate your pc for that amount of time. To resolve this, enable the port fast function on the port you have the pc connected to. I am sure someone here will explain it better than this, but this the issue in a nutshell. If you connect a computer to a switch port, it takes spanning tree a bit to allow traffic to pass. If this is an individual host being connected, you could try disabling spanning tree on the port..
