Thanks to everyone for their responses! Hopefully I'll get a question on
this
now. ;-)

2002-11-04 Thread Juan Blanco
Maximums,
Classification is the ability to identify and group specific packets(source
and destination ip address..or
source and destination UDP port number). After the packet has been
classified then you Mark it by setting bits in the IP header(DSCP, IP
precedence.)

Hey Proximo -

I'm sitting here looking over the outline of the DQOS test, and one of the
bullets says to "Explain the difference between classification and marking."
I'm looking over the QoS Config Guide, and can't seem to find any clear
distinction between the two - the Guide seems to be using the terms
interchangeably. Anyone have any insight into this?

Thanks,

Maximus

Hey Maximus :-)

>From my understanding of what I have been reading, classification is the
process of 'selecting / identifying' the packets that you would/could then
use to mark for QoS Purposes. You 'define' the packets on which you would
like to perform some kind of congestion management / avoidance / etc. action

Packets are classified by their source address, destination address, source
port, dest port, ACLs, etc.

I take Packet Marking to be the function of acting on classified packets by
modifying the TOS, DSCP, etc field to suit your QoS requirements.

That's what I think ... And I hope I'm right

Re: "Classification" vs. "Marking" [7:56792]

2002-11-04 Thread Persio Pucci
Maximus,

from "IP QoS" book:

Classifier: The classifier selects a packet in a traffic stream based on the
content of some portion of the packet header. The most common way to
classify traffic is based on the DSCP field, but you can classify traffic
based on the other fields in the packet header. This function identifies a
packet's traffic class.

Marker: This function helps write/rewrite the DSCP field of a packet based
on its traffic class.

Regards,

Persio

Re: "Classification" vs. "Marking" [7:56792]

2002-11-04 Thread Pollere, Joseph
Maximus,

This is my interpretation:

- When the packet is identified, but not marked classification is
said to be on a per hop basis

o The classification pertains only to the device that is in on,
not passed to the next router

o PQ, CQ

- When marked for network wide use, IP precedence bits can be set
