RE: Network Monitoring [7:63532]
Also, Take a look at NMIS - I love it, it's simple clean and easy to use... NMIS - Network Management Information System http://www.sins.com.au/nmis/ Introduction NMIS stands for Network Management Information System. It is a Network Management System which performs multiple functions from the OSI Network Management Functional Areas, those being, Performance, Configuration, Fault. It started as a SNMP polling and statistics viewer front-end to Tobi Oetiker's RRDTool. RRDTool replaces MRTG but doesn't include a front end and backend to handle SNMP polling and display resulting web pages etc. The original NMIS evolved quite rapidly to meet demands of production environments. The backend, polling engine, uses SNMP to collect interface and health statistics for Cisco Routers, certain Cisco Catalyst Switches and Generic SNMP devices every 5 minutes. MRTG is also cool if you don't have much time, but if you've got time/energy to spare, roll your own using RRDTool. Unlike MRTG, RRDTool draws graphs on the fly for any period of time you specify, so accuracy isn't lost for periods older than 24 hours (fiddle with MRTG and you'll see where this can be a pain). One suggestion for both of them: Run them from a database. Create a table containing all your devices and what they are, then create a profile of monitoring for each device type. Now, whip up something quick to generate your Netsaint configs. It can be a /real/ pain finding errors in a hand written hosts.cfg file (Yes, I know there is a lint filter for it, but even so, if you don't have to mangle the file, why should you?). Rgds, I use Nagios for network monitoring and Cacti for trending. I agree completely with the notion of keeping everything in a database, and that is where Cacti really shines as a front-end to RRDTool. I am working on a way to do the same thing with PHP and MySQL for the Nagios configurations. If anyone knows of an existing solution for this, please let me know. Thanks much! - -- - ---+ Michael W. You could try looking for a tool called Just For Fun Network monitoring (or something like that). I came accross it a week or two back and thought it looked quite good. I think it may have been on sourceforge.
