Re: Protocol 9
Title: Protocol 9 Kim, I believe this is the protocol number assigned to EIGRP multicast packets. I have take the liberty of including a good link to CISCO which has a ggod explanation about IGRP and this particular topic. By the way, you will truly enjoy Doyle's book. Do all the exercises and try to recreate scenarios whenever possible. A truly excellent book. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/103/5.html Raul -Original Message-From: Kim O'Connor <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Date: Friday, November 10, 2000 2:46 PMSubject: Protocol 9 On page 232 of Doyle's Routing TCP/IP he states," Unlike RIP, which is accessed via UDP, the IGRP process is accessed directly from the IP layer as protocol 9." Can anyone explain "protocol 9"? I have tried a few books and CCO but can't seem to find an explaination of what it is. Re: Protocol 9
Kim It is protocol number 9. It is defined as: 9 IGP any private interior gateway [IANA] (used by Cisco for their IGRP) Hope it helps. RE: Protocol 9
Refer to pages 32 and 38-39 of the same book. The protocol field in an IP header states what upper level protocol is to be encapsulated. According to pages 38-39, "88" indicates that IGRP is in the transport layer. I hope this helps although I'm not sure if 9 or 88 is the correct protocol number. -Original Message- From: Kim O'Connor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, November 10, 2000 2:09 PM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: Protocol 9 On page 232 of Doyle's Routing TCP/IP he states," Unlike RIP, which is accessed via UDP, the IGRP process is accessed directly from the IP layer as protocol 9."
