Re: Book Recommendations [7:10201]

2001-06-27 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

My book, Top-Down Network Design, doesn't cover routing protocols in a lot
of depth. Routing TCP/IP, on the hand, has numerous chapters on routing
protocols. It's a terrific book. (There's a second volume out now too.)
Another excellent book is Designing Routing and Swtiching Architectures by
Howard Berkowitz.

I think my book is excellent also, :-), but it has a larger scope:

analyzing business requirements
analyzing technical requirements
characterizing performance of the current network
documenting the current network
predicting traffic flow and volume for the redesign
multiprotocol addressing design
selecting routing and switching protocols
network management design
security design
physical-layer issues
selecting products to implement your design
testing your design
optimizing your design with fancy queuing, multicast, proxy functions, etc.
documenting your design

Do you already have Routing TCP/IP Volume One? It covers OSPF, RIP,
IGRP, and EIGRP as well as route maps, all of which you have to know for
some of the CCNP tests.

For BGP, I'd recommend two books:

BGP4: Interdomain Routing in the Internet by John W. Stewart III.
Short but truly excellent little book!

Internet Routing Architectures, 2nd Edition by Sam Halabi.

Another good book for CCNP/CCIE level study is Bridges, Routers, and
Switches for CCIE's by Andrew Bruce Caslow.

There are probably too many good books to mention, but I've found those
to be indispensable.

John

Hey everyone,

I am currently studying for my CCNP, and should have it knocked off in
a
couple of months. For study material so far, I have pretty much just
been
using the Cisco Press study guides and CCO.

I am just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for good books,
especially involving routing protocols such as OSPF/BGP/EIGRP, for
someone
at the CCNP level looking towards gaining enough knowledge for the
CCIE
written and eventually CCIE lab (gulp). I am after not just a study
guide,
but for more detailed info - not targetted at a specific exam but more
to
increase the detail of my knowledge in these areas.

A couple that I am looking at (that you guys have talked about in this
list):
-Routing tcp/ip vol 2 by Cisco Press
-Top down network design by Priscilla

It would be great if you could make some suggestions as to what good
books
you have found.

Thanks in advance!

Sam.

Sam,
The books that I have used most, not only for the certs, but also as a
day-to-day reference are as follows:
*Internet Routing Architectures by Halabi.killer BGP stuff, a friggin"
BIBLE!
*CCIE Fundamentals: Network Design and Case Studieswill not only give
you more than enough for the CCNP and CCIE, but has the most detailed
accounts of advanced routing protocol scenarios I have found.
*Internetworking Troubleshooting HandbookEvery conceivable problem study
from hardware configs on every model of router and switch to software to
routing protocols to etc. etc. etc..a TON of symptom/cause cases to
reference.
*Cisco ATM Solutions...Everything you wanted to know about ATM but were
afraid to ask.

I just got my CCNP yesterday. I used three or four books per test:
CiscoPress  1) Courseware Book, i.e. Cisco Internetworkign Troubleshooting;
2) CCNP Support Exam Vertification Guide; ExamCram 3) CCNP Support; and
Sybex 4) Support by Todd Lammle and et al. A lot of money, but now these
bboks are my reference library for my CCIE studies.

2001-06-28 Thread Buri, Heather H

Speaking of books on BGP, I noticed that Doyle's Routing TCP/IP volume 2
goes over BGP. Anyone have a chance to read it yet and how does it rate and
compare to say, Internet Routing Architectures? This book is on my "To
Read" list but I have not gotten around to it yet.
