I'd also like to get a program like that. We had to write our own, but I'm sure an outside company could do a better job. RE: Network latency [7:40295]
Do you have any network monitoring station currently? openview can do this rrdtool also has scripts for this... do you mean packets that the router thinks are lost or packets that the router sends, thinks is fine and never hits the endpoint? For granular detail of packet loss, you'll probably need to deploy rmon at each endpoint and watch applications as they talk across the network, rather than looking for random lost packets. For core switches, you'll either have to purchase an rmon license or a NAM. Traffic Director is capable of doing just this.. Ngenious, TD's successor also does this but runs horribly with CW2000 and usually requires it's own server. Of course if these are slow links already, then adding more traffic to tell you you have packet loss is kinda silly.. :) Check out rrdtool and mrtg to grab utilization and interface stats. At least you'll have a best guess and if you suspect packet loss at certain times during the day, you can check it against the utilization. -Patrick >>> "Mike Bernico" 04/03/02 10:06AM >>> I'd also like to get a program like that. You could try NetPredictor from NetPredict. I have used their product and found it very helpful. I don't think they went away with the other dot bombs. They are managed by very senior-level types and didn't fit the dot bomb profile. OK, I've inserted enough text to put in a URL here and avoid the URL-bashing bug: www.netpredict.com Priscilla At 10:06 AM 4/3/02, Mike Bernico wrote: >I'd also like to get a program like that. Re: Network latency [7:40295]
Solarwinds Engineer's Edition (http://www.solarwinds.net/tools.htm) also has their Network Monitor. or, if you want to go hog wild and have the budget for it, InfoVista (http://www.infovista.com/products/products.asp) would do the trick. IV supports proxy pings between routers, will collect all metrics from appropriate MIB's, Netflow statistics, SAA agents, etc, and merge them into a data warehouse for later analysis. Very robust and complete system. Re: Network latency [7:40295]
The question is pretty broad. On our enterprise networks we use four different products to determine latency and packet loss. On the local and wide area we utilize snmp and rmon to gather statistics, but that does not always give you a complete picture, especially if your data traverses public carriers etc. To gather end to end throughput, latency, and loss measurements we use Chariot, this was originally a Ganymeade product but is now NetIQ. On the free side Ttcp is the closest thing I know of. To monitor specific traffic flows protocol analyzers will provide you with a true picture of data loss and latency. We tend to capture the traffic of interest, and then get detailed information about the conversation in each direction with NetCalibrate / NetPredict. We have not found a single tool but rely on a few in combination depending on the problem we are trying to solve. Ping is not a solution when troubleshooting. If you want to test results in a laboratory situation Spirent has products under Adtech or SmartBits, there is also Ixia. http://www.netiq.com/products/chr/default.asp http://www.sniffer.com/ http://www.netpredict.com/ http://www.thetechfirm.com/ http://www.spirent.com/operations/communications.html http://www.ixiacom.com/ Aloha Shawn - Original Message - From: "Michalis Palis" To: Sent: Tuesday, April 02, 2002 8:08 PM Subject: Network latency [7:40295] > Dear all > > I am looking for a goot tool to measure network > latence and packet loss.
