RE: PIX 501 Upgrade [7:46519]

2002-06-14 Thread Mark Odette II

Like I said in my previous post similar to Brad's...

It'll PROMPT you about if you want to change/add any new
features/configurations. Can't remember the syntax exactly, but it's
the only question prompt you get before it does the Saving to flash...

It's really that simple.

When you answer yes, it will then prompt you for your key...

And you will enter in each of the sets of alpha-numerics one line at a
time... i.e.:

boot c3g4lz then hit enter
boot hit enter
boot hit enter
boot and so on, and so on, until your finished.

It will then finish the Saving to Flash... bit after that.

If you're going to upgrade to 6.2, you may as well just upgrade it normally
(not through ROMMON) and then use the activation-key command.
Became available in 6.2 so you don't need to re-install the image to
re-enter activation key.
Must admit I've not done it on 501's yet, so anyone please correct me if

Yeah - it was only a minor observation really.
I take it you used the ROMMON method, as if you had just used copy tftp
flash it wouldn't have asked if you wanted to enter a new activation key.

The ROMMON method just means more down time if that's important to you.

you cannot upgrade a pix 501, its factory default, with version 6.1 you can
run 3des, 16meg is what the default ram comes with.

2002-06-13 Thread Mark Odette II

It's been 4 months since I had to do the procedure of installing the
3DES license, but if my memory serves me correctly, all you have to do
is boot to ROMMON mode on the PIX, and then tftp the same version PIX
binary overwriting the current flash image, and when prompted if you
want to install any new keys, you just say yes, and implement your 3DES
key.

Also, just so you know, you CAN install 6.2 if you want to and have
legal access to the binary update... the following is from my PIX 501:

Cisco PIX Firewall Version 6.2(1)
Cisco PIX Device Manager Version 2.0(1)

VPN-3DES: Enabled
Maximum Interfaces: 2
Cut-through Proxy: Enabled

URL-filtering: Enabled

IKE peers: 5

** Note that I have only 16MB of RAM also.

My PIX came with 6.1(2) also, and I have since upgraded to 6.2 with the
2.0 PDM. Works great so far.

Good luck.

Mark

Subject: PIX 501 Upgrade [7:46519]

Has anyone upgraded a PIX 501. All of the current 6.x
files all say they require 32meg DRAM and this 501 only has
16meg. The problem I have is I need to upgrade to a 3DES
license and it requires that I load a new image and I don't
want to take a chance with not being able to get the current
releases to work. The funny thing is this came with 6.12 on it.

2002-06-13 Thread Rick

I have not been able to find a way to upgrade mine from DES that it came
with
to a 3DES that I purchased. According to the docs the only way to upgrade
the license is to reinstall the OS and it recommends upgrading at the same
time.
How do I enter the key?

 Rick,

You do NOT need to upgrade your PIX to run 6.2 OS, here's my pix 501 I'm
 using with 6.2(1) and 3DES:

I had Cisco TAC gen a new key for for me.. their Oracle Database which does
this automaticily was broken. Then I used this link to get the details of
the install. the instructions are for a 515 but work the same since the 501
doesnt have the floppy.
