You don't have to know any RFCs for CCIE!? I've talked to quite a few CCIEs
who don't even know how TCP works. Afterall it's just payload in a packet
that a router forwards.

I liked dre's comment about grouping them by category. My list is focused on
understanding protocol behavior for the fundamental protocols found on
enterprise networks. There are many other categories.

Hey, what other subject can we beat to death today! :-)

I know I for one have been procrastinating due to a horrid project I'm
working on. :-) How far away is the 4th of July, next day off???

But if you start getting into NAT and load balancers, it's essential
knowledge.

One natural way to characterize the ones that aren't fully stable is
to review the drafts and RFCs by the IETF Working Group:
http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/wg-dir.html

Now, you won't find old and stable things there like basic IPv4.

You may also find exceptionally valuable drafts. For example, the
current draft 20 of the revision to the BGP specification, RFC 1771,
is a far better picture of real-world BGP than is 1771.

Major in what sense? A great deal depends on the topic at hand. IP vs
TCP/UDP, vs MPLS, vs addressing, etc.

I personally use the RFC Editor pages' search function and get creative with
keywords:

I'm glad you asked that. :-) I did in fact recently compile a list of
must-read RFCs. It is here:

I keep a private-list like this as well. I like to group them by functional
importance to my line of work... e.g. NOC/Contact-related, IP/ASN-related,
DNS-related, ISP-Backbone, BGP, Security, NAT, IPSec, NMS, Testing,
etc... if you are interested in a particular category, let me know.

I also include relevant internet-drafts (both expired and current) along
with
the RFC's. I find the internet-drafts to have the most historical and
timely
value, especially along with the STD, BCP, and FYI RFC's.

This tool has been tremendously useful when acquiring this sort of
information:
http://www.dewn.com/rfc/
I believe there are other similar tools (e.g. rfcget) that accomplish the
same.
