On book I like (although I really haven't read all of it) is
Cisco Router Handbook

McGraw-Hill
ISBN 0-07-058098-7

I bought this as a reference manual more than a study aid for my CCNA. The
first part of the book goes over the Cisco product line with pictures and
diagrams so you get info on what the different models are and get so see
what they look like.
The next part is basic router stuff, configuring, loading IOS etc.
The last part goes over configuring routing protocols, RIP, OSPF, IEGRP, BGP.

If you have a friendly Cisco reseller in the area, ask for a copy of the
Cisco Products Quick Reference Guide. It's a paperback sized wirebound
listing of all the current models, as of whenever it was printed, listing
port types, default ram, flash, smartnet category, etc...

Resellets get them for free in limited quantity

very helpful for hardwre details

RE: Router models?

2000-09-11 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

Yes that would help.

If you write them down on a piece of paper, I'm sure it will show you a
pattern that will help you memorize it.

The 700:

If the number is even, it has both an S/T and a U port - else it only has an
S/T port.

If the middle number is 6 it only has 1 Ethernet ports, if 7 it has 4.

If the last number is 1 or 2 is has no POTS ports, if 5 or 6 it has 2.

The 1600:

There's not really a pattern, but there are only 5 models.

The 3600:

The third number shows you how many modules slots it has : 3640 has 4.

Ole

RE: Router models?

Title: RE: Router models?

Hi Jason,

From memory, you will need to know the details of some routers (like the differences similarities between 1601, 1602, 1603, and 1604). However, you don't have to memorise the exact number and type of interfaces, just what the models have by default, and whether they are suited in a ROBO or central office environment.

I read the Cisco Products Quick Reference Guide, as they give you an excellent summary of all the models that you need to know in Remote Access 2.0, like 700, 800, 1000, 1600, 1700, 2500, 2600, 3600, AS5xxx.

Don't be daunted by Remote Access 2.0. I found the exam to be the easiest compared to ACRC BCMSN.

Good luck on your exam!

Jeff Wang
