Setting up an ISP
Dear Gang: Can any one provide me with some information on how to set up an ISP. I will also be pleased if such information would include items such as relevant questions to ask from a client. Thanks in advance. RE: Setting up an ISP
ok, this isnt somehting to do in 5 minutes, there is a lot to be planed, lets start with the basics, how much ca sh is involved, how big is the isp willing to go to, how many users do they exepct, that has to be determined, so that u can pick adequate routers, and technologies, enoutgh wan links, for example do they have the money to get 2 34 mbit access to 2 differnet providers to ensure redundancy, do they have the required skills to maintain such a network including BGP, where do the calls come in, do they need AS with octal PRI's and digital modems, or do they do it some other way. start with that info, and ill try to help u out. Book recommendation: "ISP Survival Guide" by Geoff Huston. It's an excellent book. Some of the chapters are generic TCP/IP fundamentals, but the chapters on business planning and ISP engineering are unique. Hello when you make the CCIE ISP dial then you have the knowledge to build up ISP if cash is no problem. I will take the CCIE ISP dial DRAKE and LAB if possbile. I have 2 weeks of that stuff with a CCIE ISP dial instuctor because i am certified as an MCSE+Internet and now i know how the rabbit run. RE: Setting up an ISP
i gotta disagree, you dont need to be a ccie dial to know how to design and lay out the network for an isp. what you need, is compentent people, who arent gona read release notes and white papers to make business decisions, and common sense. answer the criterias i gave you first, then you can start thinking about the rest. each of those questions i asked will raise another and another, how much bandwith do we need, ok, do we want FR with a CIR we ga go above, or do we want an atm connection, what can we get, and how will it impact us, cost etc. different technologies will mean different interfaces, maybe different ios version. this is uncommon, at least i've never seen it in the isp world, but you could put all your access routers on a dual FDDI ring. all those things must be planed. dont go buy a ccie isp dial and then sit down and say, hell ; hes certified, hell take care of everything. if it was that simple, every1 would be an isp.
