Success with Livingston PortMasters? [7:65675]

2003-03-18 Thread Jonathan Manton
I've outgrown the SIIG 4-port serial board I currently have, and am looking
at getting a Livingston/Lucent Portmaster 2-series as a terminal server for
my lab.

The Portmasters seem to be a pretty good deal vs. a 2511. 30 port models
can be had on eBay in the $150-200 range, and you can get a 30-port
refurbished one with support, warranty and current software from
portmasters.com for about $300 (they even sell NEW 10 port ones for $190).

This is a lot less than 2511s have been going for on eBay recently
($350-$450), but I don't want to buy a Portmaster and *then* find out that
I'm going to have problems getting it to work.

I've also looked into other brands, but have read bad things about trying to
use older Xyplex gear for a Cisco lab, and the used Digi/Adtran/Cyclades
terminal servers are as much or more than a 2511.

Anyone have experiences/opinions to share?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Ihave previously used the PM2's as a terminal server, to connect to both Sun
and cisco equipment and it worked fine. They are ofcouse quiet a lot larger
than the 2500's?, probably about 3U

Yeah, I think the 2e is a 4U unit. It has 30 DB-25s, after all... need lots
of room for that.

My consideration is of cost (and of course compatibility), more than space -
if I have a terminal server, I can locate the lab in a much more convenient
place elsewhere in my house, rather than in a stack on my desk where serial
cables from my PC can reach it.

I received my eBay-purchased Portmaster last night, and am VERY happy with
it.

On www.portmasters.com, in their download area, is a Java "Wizard" that will
turn the thing into a reverse telnet server with no knowledge of the
Portmaster commands.

I now have, for $119 (including shipping), 30 network-accessible RS-232
ports that I can get to from anywhere in my home network with "telnet 60xx"
(where xx is 00 to 29, representing the serial port).

Had to do a little work to wire the DB-25 to RJ-45 adapters, but now I even
have it set up so that regular (straight through) network cables will run
the console ports on the routers and switches.

Perfect for my growing lab, at a great price.

I to purchased the Lucent Portmaster but I got the PM25 unit. I was able to
pick up 4 of these on EBay for $25 each (had to buy all 4) They have 3 db68
connectors similar to the ones on the Cisco 2509 or 2511. They are so
similar the Cisco octopus cable for these routers actually works on the PM25
so I did not have n to make the DB25 to RJ45 adapters. I suggest that if you
are strapped for cash after purchasing your lab routers you look into these
Portmaster units. As stated below lots of ports for a low cost.
