Steve,

Winch is a big help to wife and I use it in stronger wind close hauled. I
have new sails for next season and expect to trim less. Moving the new

Hi John, great site and I hope the shoulder heals up quickly and completely.
I own a 32 as well and the pics of your running rigging improvements are
really valuable. Do you find you need to use the winch to trim the main
sail? My 32 has all the original hardware and sheeting in the main requires
the winch, which isn't optimal.

Stus-List Genoa Sheets

2013-07-22 Thread Tom B
Our genoa sheets are left over from the PO. I'm not sure of the size, but they
are bigger than 1/2, super fat and great on the hands. But they do not run
through the blocks well and act like they are caught just from their weight and
softness.

I have Barient 32s. I am all for comfortable sheets, but really want ones
that also work.

Any recommendations?

Stus-List Sailing Sunglasses Recommendations

2013-07-22 Thread Edd Schillay
Listers,

I'm seeking recommendations for a good set of sailing sunglasses. I
know Ronstan, Gill and a few others make some good polarized sets and was
interested in hearing about which ones you like or dislike.

I prefer something with blue lenses, polarized and has good coverage to
block glare from water reflection too.

And if it's something that looks like it belongs in the 23rd Century,
then all the better :-)

Re: Stus-List Genoa Sheets

2013-07-22 Thread Bill Coleman
Coltrek came with fat sheets, and I have always replaced them with the same
- I think 5/8, as I don't think 3/4 would fit in #32 self tailer.
Wire always seems thinner than it is, and rope always seems thicker that it
appears, for some reason.

Just looked it up, 5/8 Sta-Set Dbl Braid, NER2100.20Been working fine
for 10 years. Got them from Oyster Bay, they always pre-stretch all their
work.
Before that I had a local fellow make some up, also 5/8 but very soft and
stretchy - I took his recommendation, but discovered later he was just
trying to get rid of it. Both splices eventually came out, one when I was
just rolling the sail up.
Last purchase from him!

Hear, hear, two overboard and two broken this year alone.

The pair I had the longest were prescription, my buddy made them and put
spring temples on them. Those are the kind that you have to take your hands
and lead them around your ears, that part is a kind of springy semi-circle.
They don't come off. I slowly destroyed them over several years.

I recently purchased Sta-set X, 3/8 for both main and jib halyards for my CC

twice since in light air so the jury is still out. Very slick requiring more
winch wraps. Crew learned quickly gloves are required to prevent burns when
managing the new jib sheets.
There are a couple charts available on the 'net with line/sheet size recs based
on yacht size and intended use. Will forward address later.

Gracie, a IOR vintage custom 45, has gone back to wire rope for jib

So if you go the high strength fibre route you might need to factor in the

If you wear prescription glasses, get transition lenses with an anti-reflective
coating. I've been using them for years, and they work great.

2013-07-22 Thread Marek Dziedzic
I second Joe's recommendations (polarised, $20). OK, maybe $30.

And keep in mind that _any_ polarised glasses would make reading the
instruments difficult, because the LCD displays (most of them are) use
polarised glass (and the polarised liquid crystal) to display the image.

Btw. different polarised glasses (often times from the same vendor) have the
polarisation axis at a different angle to vertical. Play with different glasses
until you find a pair that you like and that makes the instruments the most
visible (take your chart plotter to the store, if you can). and if nothing else
works, you can always tilt your head to one side (for reading the instruments).

Hi David
I recently overhauled my 28s, it is just the 4 bolts - nothing hidden.

Maybe leave the bolts off, put the drum back on , insert handle and pull
a rope? You just need it to break free, I would not think it will take
much.

Re: Stus-List Winch breakdown

2013-07-22 Thread Dennis C.
David,

Take a screwdriver or punch and set it against one of the lugs where the
Allen screws were.  Tap it gently with a hammer to rotate the gear case in the
base.  Do it lightly around each of the lugs.  The gear case will eventually
rotate and break loose.

Do NOT insert anything between the gear case and the base to spread the joint
between them.  You'll likely crack the base.

When you reassemble, coat the mating surfaces with USS TefGel.

Once you have the gear case out, there's one more trick to getting it apart.
Remove the 3 Allen screws.  Note that one of them has a bushing spacer between
the lower and upper case halves.  Don't lose it!!

Once the screws are out, use a carpenter's tool (5 in one knife) or a knife
blade to separate the lower gear case half (bottom cover) from the rest of the
assembly.  Gently tap it into the joint at the guide pin and separate it just a
tiny bit.  Move to the other side and repeat.  Don't try to move it much.  Be
patient, it will eventually separate.

When you reassemble, coat all screws and guide pins with TefGel.

If you booger up anything, I may have spare parts.

I have tried at least a 100 different brands of sunglasses because I live in
the south and have VERY light sensitive eyes! The hands-down best boating
sunglasses I have ever owned were Vuarnet's with their Nautilux lens! They are
polarized and have a triple gradient (darker at the top and bottom, lighter in
the middle). Unfortunately for me, I now require prescription len's for good
distance vision. Almost all of the prescription sunglasses that I have tried
have a ton of distortion from the curved lens or they just plain suck! I have
found an alternative that is working out pretty good though. If you have to
have prescription sunglasses, then check out www.nyxsportsglasses.com and click
on the link for prescription lens'. The corrective lens' are separate from the
sunglass lens and snap in and out. You can get many different lens' of
different darknesses and polarized or not. Even if you don't need the
corrective lens, the glasses are pretty good and not overly expensive.

  Listers,

I'm seeking recommendations for a good set of sailing sunglasses. I know
Ronstan, Gill and a few others make some good polarized sets and was interested
in hearing about which ones you like or dislike.

I prefer something with blue lenses, polarized and has good coverage to block
glare from water reflection too.

And if it's something that looks like it belongs in the 23rd Century, then
all the better :-)

Re: Stus-List New Halyards for teh 38MKII

2013-07-22 Thread Josh Muckley
I really like the Crystalline line of rope from Yale. For what it is worth
Practical Sailor did a dollars to stretch comparison a few years ago and
the Crystalline had one of best ratings/ratios. About a month ago I
finally decided that the fishhooks in my wire halyards had to go. A
renewed look at the options showed the three top contenders NER V100, Yale
Crystalline, and Sampson Warpspeed. I compared prices for all my options
at APSltd.com and then drove there to compare in person. The Crystalline
came in at $2.19 for 3/8 with an 11,000lbs rating. The stretch is
supposed to be 0.25% at 1000lbs of tension or about 1.5 over 50 feet.
Something I kind wish I had thought to do is use cheaper and maybe thinner
line for the bottom half of the halyard. During the hoist the only time
you really need to be concerned with stretch is the final foot or so. I
needed two lengths about 125' so I walked out about $500 lighter.

Good luck,

Josh Muckley

I've been very satisfied with the quality but some people may not like how
stiff the rope is.

Hello,
It's really helpful and informative to read the posts on this list, thanks to

I'm have  a 33-2 under contract, but have heard about a potential keel/mast
step issue with this model, having to do with a collapsing grid. I've tried to

Can anyone guide me to a source of info about this?  Should such a problem
eliminate a specific boat from consideration? Is the proper repair very
expensive? Sounds like it would be.

Re: Stus-List (no subject)

2013-07-22 Thread Dennis C.
Andrew,

Many of us have had to rebuild our mast step.  It's really not a big deal.

Many early CC's had an unprotected, unencapsulated wooden mast steps.  The one
on my 35-1 was simply 3-4 pieces of marine ply bonded together and cut to
bridge across the bilge.  After years in the wet environment the wood got
saturated and lost strength.  I installed a hydraulic backstay adjuster.  The
first time I tensioned it, I shoved the mast down into the bilge a couple
inches.  Oops!

If the boat you're looking at has a weak step, it's not a deal breaker.  You
have to mark and measure everything around the mast step, pull the rig, scrape
out the old rotted step and build a new step.  You can order thick fiberglass
sheets and cut them to fit and glass them in.  You can shape a piece of white
oak to rebuild it.  You can do like I did and build up a solid glass step with
a limber hole underneath for drainage.  If you're fairly handy with West System
epoxy or fiberglass resin, it's not a huge job.

The only critical thing is measure, measure, measure so the new step is the
same elevation as the old one.

You have lots of help here on the list.
