Re: Stus-List C & C 36 Head Sails

2013-09-29 Thread Mike Brannon
Brad, My number 3 is a 97% blade from North made of the radian
material. I had also talked with Sobstad who recommended a 100% made
from Pentax again with an inner set of tracks. Previously I had a
115% that came with the boat. It was a C&C 29 mainsail recut to be a
headsail for my boat. It worked but wasn't very fast.

I raced yesterday in winds reaching the 20-23KT (gusts to 30) range
with the 135 (North radian). Initially we were going to use the
blade but ripped the luff tape raising the sail. I have the
centerboard version of the 36 (1978) and it tends to be a little
tender so I tend to reduce sail earlier than most of the boats I race
with. With a single reef in the main and the 135 we did just fine and
were pointing higher than most of the fleet and the boat stayed
relatively flat. Rail in the water very infrequently and only in the
strongest gusts.

I like the blade and it is great for going to wind. I don't think I'd
have done as well as I did yesterday had I used that sail.I would
most likely have had to do a sail change on the last leg.BTW, I
don't use the roller furler for racing.

If you want pictures of the added tracks let me know and I'll send them
off line. There are some things I'd do differently and I'm more than
happy to discuss this. Also, Sobstab's recommendation was to have
the tracks further outboard, which I am considering the possibility of
either moving mine or adding another set.

I am a C & C 36 owner and currently have a 135% and 155%for headsails.
For those 36 owners, is a 100% considered the next sizedown for heavier

Stus-List Leaking H2O tank-how to remove failed adhesive

2013-09-29 Thread kelly petew
My forward tank had [still has] a slow leak at its lowest point where the water
line exists.

I used a tube of adhesive [polyurethane, I think, but not sure] in an attempt
to seal it. It appears the adhesive did not bond well with the tank
[polypropylene]
In any event, it's a botched job and I need to start over.
Any suggestions on adhesive removal would be greatly appreciated. I suppose I
could try and cut it away from the tank and line, but I fear I might puncture
the tank. The tank is under V-berth, and I wouldn't want to have to remove it!!

Also, has anyone had any success using Captain Tolley's creeping crack cure on
this sort of repair??

2013-09-29 Thread Jim Watts
Your water tank will be polyethylene, not polypropylene, and nothing will
stick to it long-term. Captain Tolley's will certainly not work. Your best
bet is to remove the tank and take it in to a plastics shop and have the
leak heat welded.
To get the residue of the failed repair off, use Anti-Bond 2015. You can
get it through West Marine if all else fails. <

Re: Stus-List New boat - NOT

2013-09-29 Thread Gary Nylander
Me too. I had to laugh at the sheet stoppers. It looks like the owner had
the same problem I did - a main halyard stopper which wouldn't do the job,
replaced it with a bigger one from another manufacturer. I chose Garhauer,
and it looks like one of those is Garhauer as well - better stopping at half
the price - and you cannot buy those original XA's any more so unless you
can step up to a new triple, you will get an unmatched condition regardless
of brand.

I like the looks of the boat too. Obviously a difference in a boat designed
in the early '70's vs. a 1988 version.

Little stuff caught my eye - mismatched sheet stoppers, wiring in the nav
station, screws in the hull liner forward, forward hatch, etc. Obviously
nothing major. The wood is crying for some oil but again that's minor.
As I said, it looked like a nice boat.

Good luck

But other wise I thought it looked good.

I was thinking I had a chance to get a great deal, a boat in fair

Unfortunately no. Surveyor found the boat was full of mold, cushions
wet and moldy, stove rusted beyond repair, bilge full of rain water,
manual bilge pump not functional, anchors rusted to point of needing
replacement, Plus the usual minor issues - scrapes and scuffs in the
gel coat etc.
With the bilge full of water the surveyor was unable to properly check
the keel bolts or the mast step.
All told, just does not make sense. And yes, I know, a few people on
this list warned me of exactly these issues, but I couldn't help from
trying to find that great deal where you catch a seller at just the
right time.
Thanks for the advice and offers of assistance. Rich had offered to
help sail the boat back

Now I'm back looking at the CS 30 I posted. More expensive, but boat
looks in much better condition. Bill, I appreciate the personal
recommendation with the broker. Discussed the boat with him, he says
it has a few cosmetic issues but that the owner died last winter and
the adult, non-sailing, children are selling the boat. He feels they
will likely be open to an offer given the boat will start costing them
winter storage fees within a few weeks.

If it does go ahead I don't want to take that much time off work to
sail the boat all the way home, but I have a local skipper who I was
organizing to bring back the C&C29, and we should be able to organize
getting the boat home in mid Oct if I go ahead with the CS. I'm hoping
if we time it right that I can drive down to Yarmouth and hop on the
boat with him to bring it up the coast of NS.

We'll see how it goes. I'm still willing to stick with my little
Mirage 24 if I can't find the right deal.

Personally, I think Class B transponders are a waste of money.

Many folks who have Class B transponders are so proud of them that they
leave them on all the time, thus flooding the channel with worthless
traffic. The boat is sitting at the dock, broadcasting "Under Way"
while the owner is sitting at home watching football.

I've had AIS for at least 5 years, and leave Class B reception turned
off. I worry about commercial vessels, tankers and freighters. And
whales.

My final 2 cents... (unless I keep thiinking) Really, I think a Class A

important. Outside of highly tamed areas of the world AIS is pretty

I had exactly the same problem. Changed out the wheel unit with a new-to-me
(but better condition) unit. Thought that solved the problem. Did it again! I
found that if I switch off the power to the controller I do not have the
problem. I know only switch on the auto helm power when I am using it - and
switch it off whenever I steer by hand.

Clearly the problem lies with the controller - and mine is the old black unit -
so no chance of repair / replacement!!

Yes, ignoring that big red buoy can have its consequences.
I've seen one boat cut through there but it was a Bayfield 29, very shallow
draft.
I hope the damage isn't too expensive to fix.

Re: Stus-List Raymarine ST4000 autopilot problem

2013-09-29 Thread Knowles Rich
To open the wheel unit, put a large flat screwdriver or pry between the two
circular segments and pry them apart. This will expose the drive belt, idler
pulleys and the tensioning clutch lever. The problem you are having is
mechanical.

2013-09-29 Thread Chuck S
It may simply be a loose belt?  There is a tensioner for that if it is a 4000 Plus.Another bandaid fix is to shockcord the clutch lever so it can't release on you.  Check the mechanicals first.  RayMarine recommends washing it out with fresh water periodically.   Good luck. Re: Stus-List Bouncing Off a Shoal

2013-09-29 Thread Dr. Mark Bodnar

Ouch!
I remember that shoal from years back when I was crewing the Prince of
Wales race -- in light winds every boat was trying to cut the corner
headed out of the harbor.
Looking over the side into the clear water (I was working the mast) I
was saw boulders sliding past the boat. When I raised the alarm the
captain slammed the boat over to head for deeper water, just then
another large boat (maybe 40') crashed, lifted up out of the water, did
a pirouette atop a rock and slid back down the far side facing the
opposite direction.

It was crazy seeing a boat that big pop up out of the water!
I never knew the name of the shoal, but after searching Thrumcap it
clearly was.

Hope the damage is not too severe!

I had a problem with my autopilot today I could use some feedback on. For
the last few weeks, the lever that engages/disengages the autopilot would
periodically release so that the autopilot ceased being able to turn the
wheel. Once engaged, it seemed to work fine, but the initial engagement
seemed to not always stay locked in. Today, as luck would have it, I was
maneuvering in the 10 minutes before that start gun, engaged the pilot to

it was annoying to say the least. I have brought the unit home and I can
see no way to get inside it to see if I can figure out what is going on with
the connect/disconnect lever. No disassembly instructions in the manual.
Is this a "send it back to the factory", "throw it in the trash" or other
solution? Thanks- Dave
