Stus-List PC for cheap

2014-05-16 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Think about this in the context of sailboat ownership.

At one time or another, we've all done it. Some of us still do it. We all know
that guy down the pier that's raised it to an art form.

What? Doing or fixing something on a sailboat on the cheap that does or can
lead to less than satisfactory results. Something that may create an unsafe
condition that may put crew or family at risk. Something that eventually will
need to be done over the right way and end up costing more in the end.

So..my question is what clever, imaginative, politically correct phrase
describes cheap?

I'm talking about literary genius like using deferred success as PC to
describe failure.

I've considered irresponsibly frugal, excessively thrifty, etc. but I just
can't seem to create that aha PC phrase for cheap.

If I install any Linux based OS is that equivalent to reformatting the hard
drive. I mean will I lose my MS Office applications and adobe etc if I do
that. If I make a separate partition for the Linux OS will I be able to
access applications in the Windows XP partition with it? I have lots of
hard drive space available. What is the difference between Linux mint
versions and Ubuntu?

I do important things like banking on my ipad or iphone using iOS7 but I do
most email and surfing on my XP machine. I like a full size QWERTY keypad
for typing and I like my large monitor and wired mouse control.

Is anyone aware of any reports of people getting hacked because they are
still using Windows XP? I know quite a few internet users who are still
running on Windows XP and personally I have not heard of any issues yet. I
update my anti virus software regularly and that software tells me that I am
protected and I do full systems scans every day, does that help at all?

Marek, do you know if I will affect anything by uninstalling all java
programs using add/remove from control panel?

The best info I have on Calypso's original invoice is from the USCG
Abstract of Title.

In April of 1971 a mortgage of $110,000 was recorded. I expect this
price included sails, instruments, and other commissioning costs. The
boat was named Arieto and is hull #1 of the Limited Edition 43'
designs. It was raced in the 1971 SORC as a CC factory boat then
sold off soundings to the owner that campaigned the 43' Arieto
extensively up and down the US east coast.

Somewhere around 1975/76 the boat was listed for sale with a price of
$97,000, well equipped for racing but with high mileage. From the USCG
abstract it appears that she was traded in to Palmer Johnson in
December 1976. I have seen references to the original owner campaigning
a Frers 46 in the late 70's under the same name, Arieto.

In 1978 the 43 was sold by Palmer Johnson to an owner on Lake Michigan
and renamed Phantom. No price is indicated.

In 1986 the 43 was sold to an owner racing out of Chicago and renamed
Esta Es. I guess the price was between $75K and $80K based on some
references to mortgages.

We bought the 43 in December 1998 for +-$67K, trucked her to Seattle and
renamed her Calypso. Ask me about a current value after we complete
the ongoing deck restoration projects. The asking price range for CC
43's of this vintage run from $49K un-restored to $180K for a very nice
fully updated boat.

I would like to hear from some of the owners of the older CC boats to
find out the original invoice prices of their boats. I think that it
will be very interesting for us to go back in time and compare the
original prices to today's current value to see the actual depreciation
over a long period of time.

I just received my third survey on Alchemist, a 1986 CC 29 Mk 2. 14
years ago it was valued at $40,000.00, 6 years ago $24,000.00 and today
$18,000.00. The interesting thing is that I put in about $15,000.00 over
the last few years in new sails, feathering propeller, instruments,
rebuilt engine and transmission, and other incidentals.

My cost per sail is actually quite reasonable. If I take into
consideration my annual club costs, repairs maintenance, insurance,
replacement of racing sails, fuel, depreciation, etc. divided by the
number of sails a year (about 65 times) my costs are about $100.00 per
sail. There are many boats on the lake that only leave the dock a few
times a year with costs that are similar to mine so their cost per sail
is significantly higher.

Re: Stus-List java updates

2014-05-16 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
Switching to Linux is *EASIER* than switching to Windows 8.
I put Mint on a laptop for my wife, who is NOT an IT person, and it took her
about 5 seconds to learn. Mint uses a GUI that is as close to Windows 7 as can
be and far easier to use than 8.
I had to get rid of Windows 8 on a new laptop for my son because of driver
issues. It now dual boots to 7 and Mint. Mint was very easy to load, but 7 took
a couple days to hunt down all the drivers :(
For an added bonus, Mint can run from the boot media, so you can try it before
you install it.

2014-05-16 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Everything Joe said about Mint is basically the same for Ubuntu. Both can
be downloaded for free and run from a CD so I suggest trying both. Ubuntu
tries to advertise that they have better long term support and regular
periodic updates, but who knows. As easy as they both are it probably
doesn't matter. With a linux application called wine you can run some
windows applications but planning on a dual boot is your best bet. I
regulary switch between XP and Ubuntu defaulting to Ubuntu for speed and
security. There are fewer and fewer reasons for me to use XP but
occasionally I just need that one legacy application.

Re: Stus-List Securing mast to step

2014-05-16 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
That pretty much describes how the factory did it on our 37.

To be more exact, in our case it is a Ushaped bracket that is bolted down
to the metal mast step. The tangs of this bracket stick up about 8. The
mast slips over this when the mast is set into the boat, so the bracket is
hidden up inside the base of the mast. A 1/2 S/S bolt passes through the
mast, through holes in each tang and out the other side of the mast where
there is nyloc nut to keep it in place. I think the bracket is made of
aluminium and came from Offshore Spars with the mast and step when the boat
was built.

list. This is not the first time yahoo has done something to break
everybody else's lists. I'm using an sbcglobal email address, which is
operated through yahoo. I would have no real problem getting a gmail
account and re-subscribing if that would help Stu and make the list more
stable.

Stus-List NO List Problems

2014-05-16 Thread Stu via CnC-List
The header on all list emails has been change to “via cnc-list”. It is a fix
in our software that circumvents Yahoo’s DMARC installation.

So far it is working. Since the change, we have not had 1 subscriber bounced –
including those with Yahoo accounts.

You will also notice that at the bottom of each email is a link where you can
change your email preferences including unsubscribing.

Re: Stus-List removing prop shaft coupling - how?

2014-05-16 Thread Michael Brown via CnC-List
Can be a tough job. On Windburn I pulled the shaft a couple of years ago ensure
it could be removed in the water if it every was required.

On my CC 30-1 the dimensions are:

Shaft - 7/8 diameter
Coupling - 3 1/2 outside diameter, three bolt holes
Coupling - 1 5/8 inside machined cavity - 5/8 deep

I had to use the bolts on the coupling to break the shaft free. I made up a
spacer
with 5 heavy washers, 1 7/16 outside diameter and 1/2 hole. I put a 1 1/2
long bolt
through it and a nut just flush with the bolt end. Outside diameter of the bolt
head
and nut was just under 7/8. The assembly mated squarely with both the shaft and
back of the engine and the washers held everything in position.

The shaft was noticeably frozen in place. I had cleaned and oiled the coupling
bolts and they still required significant torque to get the shaft moving.

I think the use of a socket is fine as long as you can be 100% sure it is in
place
and the forces are not too high.

I believe the problem I was having may have been caused by the set screw forcing
a lip of metal up that was binding all the way out. I drilled a small
depression into
the shaft after it was out and made a matching round on the front of the set
screw.
I did a trial fit with the set screw tightened. When I took it apart by hand a
firm
pull and taps from a plastic mallet was enough.

Two years later ( last winter ) I pulled the shaft and replaced the stuffing.
Shaft
came out without any requirement of special language this time.

I am impressed by the Johnson Duramax stuffing. Previously the slightest
tightening
of the stuffing box stopped all water flow, and the most minute loosening that I
could do would drip constantly even at rest. The new stuffing allows a range of
drip rates to be adjusted.

Not THAT kind - the kind that had tubes and was a transceiver. They transmitted

need this to communicate are decades gone.

I used a 3 arm puller, PB blaster, a blowtorch, and the largest wrench I
could fit on the puller, with a pipe on that as an extension. I had a
12 adjustable wrench wedged in to keep the shaft from turning (the
puller would have turned with it). The adjustable wrench now has a very
impressive bend to it, and it took a fair bit of heat and force to get
off. Hopefully yours isn't that difficult. And as Mainsail says in his
blog, easiest way is to cut it off... if time is money, go that route.

Re: Stus-List removing prop shaft coupling - how?

2014-05-16 Thread Peter Fell via CnC-List
I’m getting set up to do the same thing and from my investigations and
discussions with local marine mechanics, I’ve determined:

1) The coupling would be a tolerance fit.
2) Cutting the old coupling off is the quickest method and you should do
that at the keyway to minimize the potential for scoring the shaft itself.
Otherwise a plate made-up with the same bolt pattern as the coupling and a
rachet socket placed between the plate and the coupling + bolts through the
plate and coupling can be used to press the coupling off.
3) Regardless of how you take it off, replace the coupling and take the shaft
and new coupling it to a machinist to have a fit-and-face done on it and the
shaft checked for straightness.
4) Might as well plan on doing the cutlass bearing at the same time.

An old coupling would not have a tight fit on the shaft and the shaft torque
would be taken up only by the shaft key shear that and the shaft backs out
of the stuffing box and then you’d get to test out how good your bilge pump is.

What? Doing or fixing something on a sailboat on the cheap that does or
