Stus-List Landfall Upgrades

I have an old, old, AutoHelm 3000 mounted to Pegathy's wheel. I thought it
would barely work when I bought the boat, and that I'd replace it very quickly.
WRONG! It works amazingly well with one exception, large, confused following
seas. Once I balance the boat the 3000 keeps a heading amazingly well. Long
trips from Charleston to Beaufort NC and from Cape May to Block Island have
proved its worth. I've gone through 4 belts in four years, though. And
sometimes getting the right sensitivity setting is crucial.

In my new SeaFrost 12-volt refrigeration system, I'm using SeaFrost's widget
fan and it is hard wired to the refrigeration system--when the refrigeration is
turned on, it runs. It draws such low amperage that it is insignificant and it
really helps eliminate temperature zones within the box. I think having it
have its own battery would be much more hassle, if that's what you have in
mind. The fan I have is very similar to a computer cooling fan.

Most of computer fans are 12 V (some are 5 V). Many have adjustable rpm, so
they can be extremely quiet and effective. And they can be very cheap (I mean
low cost), as well. You should not pay more that around $15 (more like $7).
They use a couple of W (depending on the rpm). On the low setting (600 rpm)
that should not exceed 0.1 A.

Comes in white or black, takes 4 D batteries and can provide up to 300 hours of

David,
O2 Cool makes a 5" battery powered fan I use in my boat. We use it in many
places on board. I bought a few of them over the years and have one at home.
The batteries last a long time. Many times I have left the thing on and it ran
for days before I noticed it was on. I'm sure there are many other brands just
as capable and I would suggest buying something cheap and try it out. Mine have
an AC/DC adapter so you could tie it into your shore power or inverter power.

I carry spare batteries aboard because I have battery flashlights, headlamps,
LED puck reading lights in the berths, and a light inside my ice box.

We have runners w checkstays on our 34R. They help shape the mainsail and can
add speed in light winds, but as others have reported, they aren't absolutely
required unless the backstay is tensioned heavily. There are several ways to
add bunji retractors to pull these out of the way when not used.

Racing C&C 40s back when they were new, in the late 70s/early 80s, we used
running backstays. They were used to do two things; stop the mast overbending
when you had a lot of permanent backstay on and to stop the mast pumping when
beating into a lumpy sea.
These days, another use for running backstays on many cruiser/racers (like
Swans) is to tension an inner forestay on which a staysail is set.
As an aside, what we always refer to as check stays is a second set of runners
attached lower on the mast, usually on race boats with less...robust...rigs
than ours. These again are mostly used to adjust the bend in the mast as the
permanent backstay is tightened. The runners and checks control the shape of
the main; it's not uncommon to "invert" the main if you don't have enough
tension on the runners and checks when you max out the permanent.

Mike,

The traveler on most of the 35-3 is found on the cabin top. Some are on the
bridge deck, but I think those are fairly rare. The cabin top location is
nice, as it keeps the main out of the cockpit, but it is not ideal for
managing the loads on the main sail. My pit guy manages the main and all
the other halyards and strings. He stays well away from the genoa guys with
their flying elbows. I would certainly not want the main in front of the
wheel. Too little room for that.

Where is the traveller in 35-3? Our family 36 (1981) had it on coachroof
(horrible) our frersc33 and cc33-2 have on bridgedeck (marginally better).
Koobalibra cc115 and prospector cc99 have immediately in front of pedestal

What Jake said. I dropped my keel after worrying about it with 15+ years of
“keel smile”. Although our boat is like Jake’s model and having the full keel,
there was virtually no problem with the keel bolts. The forward one had a small
amount of pitting and the rest of them were like new.

I suspect that there will be no “surprises” with yours.

Scroll down through my blog entry and you will see some photos of my keel bolts
when I dropped it last year which should reassure you.

Re: Stus-List C&C 35-III Headroom?

2015-07-30 Thread David Knecht via CnC-List
I finally gave up and put a piece of rubber pipe insulation on mine because I
hit my head so many times on that door frame. Dave

Re: Stus-List C & C 35 Mk III CB Keel Bolts

2015-07-30 Thread Don Wagner via CnC-List
I’ve also noted some rusty areas in the bilges of my previous C&C 30 and my
current C&C 41 CB. The problem was that C&C used steel backing plates and some
steel washers. I removed the original stuff and replaced it with the proper
alloy stainless washers, and in some cases I had custom SS plates made and
insured the they were properly passivated.
Note:
My Metallurgist friends @ Johns Hopkins U, tell me that many alloys of
stainless will develop some surface rust while developing a surface protective
oxide.

I have never noted any rusting of the keel bolts and never have seen Aluminum
anything used in the bolts on a C&C.

Paul,

I agree with you on the washers. Some of the spacer that C&C used were
aluminum wedges to keep the nuts square to the bolts. Mine were all replaced
with stainless. An easy upgrade and well worth it.

Have 33-2 with k/cb - no issue with the bolts, but the washers do need to be
replaced with stainless ...

Paul. :)
