Stus-List Through -hull fittings

2016-01-09 Thread corralmaduzi via CnC-List
Hi guys,
Can anyone tell me if C&C40's have a solid hull around through- hull fittings
ie water can't penetrate the balsa-core around original located fittings or
should I check and replace the core with epoxy.
Thanks
Larry.

Stus-List 10. Re: Acoustic insulation in Canada (Dreuge)

2016-01-09 Thread Dave Syer via CnC-List
Was at the Toronto boat show last night and indeed hmp had insulation on sale,
C$75 for 13 sq ft. Thanks for the tip. It may not have quite the mass of
the other material i was looking at. (Not good) It is thicker (may be good
or bad) and has a layer of foil n the outside. (Probably good). Anyway, It
was easy to buy.
I expect that in leaky a two sided box like the 33ii 's engine bay, there are
more impactful opportunities for noise abatement than the bestest ever
insulation.
Thanks for the input on this question, see below for a link to a pretty
comprehensive write up on the subject. There is also an extremely superficial
article in the current issue of " this old boat" if anyone is interested in
learning very little. ;-)

Stus-List 33ii, 35iii others? In-mast wiring question, vhf RG-213

2016-01-09 Thread Dave Syer via CnC-List
Along with icom 506 AIS purchase, I will replace and upgrade my in-mast wiring.
Currently the vhf antenna is wired with RG-58, and I would like to upgrade to
RG-213, which is, I believe, a bit larger in diameter.
The existing wiring is neatly packed in a plastic raceway that runs the length
of the mast and is secured to the its wall. From my quick glance last fall,
filtered through my bad memory, it looks as though the raceway has a cover that
snaps over a channel. Not a lot of space and installing new wires may be a
challenge.
Has anyone done this on a similar model? Any fatherly advice available before
I pay for cable?
Thx. Dave.

Re: Stus-List VHF / AIS

2016-01-09 Thread Jim Reinardy via CnC-List
I had a wired remote mic on my old Catalina 27 with a tiller. That never
worked very well for me because the cord kept getting in the way. When I
bought Firewater, I installed the Simrad RS25, which is the predecessor to the
35. It has the wireless remote, but not AIS. At that time, the boat had no
wiring going to the pedestal and I was not wild about drilling the hole in the
cockpit floor for the first wires. I have since put a Triton display at the
helm, so I would be more comfortable with the wired mic if I were buying it
today.

We have liked the convenience of the wireless, though you do have to monitor
battery usage. We do mostly racing and short cruises so it has not been a big
deal for us. The sound quality on the 25 remote mic has been great, no
complaints. With regard to keeping it on board, I bought one of these:

http://mobility.snapitproducts.com/snapit-marine/products/v007/v007-handheld-electronics-device-holder

to mount at the helm. The mic is either in someone’s hand or in the holder and
we have not had any issues.

I hear what you are saying, Fred. And I have to agree.

Imzadi has a fixed mount VHF at the helm and also a separate fixed mount at the
nav station. Each is connected to a GPS (the one at the helm is the Garmin
chartplotter), and each has a dedicated antenna.

While I like the redundancy, the real reasons I have 2 fixed mount VHFs are:

1) a handheld only has a range of a couple of miles on a good day, and

2) around 50 years of boating experience has led me to the conviction that a
handheld radio is a holder for dead batteries.

For not much more than the cost of the $139 RAM mike you could install a fairly
good SH VHF radio and a dedicated antenna. And neither would ever fall
overboard.

First, has anyone ever lost overboard something that wasn’t firmly attached to
the boat? And secondly, has anyone gone to use a piece of rechargeable
battery-powered electronics, only to find that the battery was dead? Neither
of these scenarios apply to a hard-wired remote mic like the S-H or the Icom.

Stus-List In mast wiring

2016-01-09 Thread Bradley Lumgair via CnC-List
We changed out the wiring for the wind instrument last summer on Pulse, our '85
33 MkII, it was enclosed in a plastic tube that was loose in the mast. It slid
down and captured the wiring harness as we were pulling the new down from the
top of the mast, took us 2 hours to figure out what had happened, and 15
minutes to finish once we solved the problem by jabbing an awl into the tube
through one of the slots where the halyards exit and levering it up. Would have
been ideal if we had taken the mast down.
Good luck.

2016-01-09 Thread mike amirault via CnC-List
Yes, I have replaced most of the wiring in my mast on my C&C33ii. It actually
has two separate conduits for wiring, although I think one side only goes up as
far as the spreaders. You should be able to split up the wires so they will fit
in the conduit. My advice is to use the old wires/cable to pull in the new and
maybe use some wire lube if you encounter too much resistance. You do not want
to pop the conduit off the aluninum track Good luck.

Re: Stus-List Interior finishes - 84 33ii and others of that vintage.

2016-01-09 Thread Dave Syer via CnC-List
Answering my own post For the sake of future archive searchers.

the 33ii owners manual states the interior is oiled teak.
Windstar's saloon table top is varnished, probably was originally, and has been
disassembled and will be refinished. The base was originally oiled teak, and
has now been stripped of its p-owner applied (poorly) varnish, and refinished
with minwax teak oil.The tenons were remastered and a under slung
/suspended drawer-box is being built. Revitalizing an old base by scrubbing
with scotchbrite and paint thinner, then re-oiling would be a very simple and
worthwhile project.

Dave

>>>snip

Happy new year all!

Working in the shop today, I was refastening the tenon to the foot of
Windstar's saloon table to its 'leg', and while inverted on the bench (the
saloon table, not me) I noticed the flaking varnish and the PO's sloppy
brushwork. And lo, another project was added to the list. That varnish was
easily scraped off with a hooked cabinet scraper, and it got me to wondering

Does anybody know what was originally used to finish the woods in the interior?

Stus-List Lemon oil cause mildew?

2016-01-09 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Ok, so under the advise of this list I used lemon oil at the beginning of
the 2015 season. I chalked up the mildew this last fall to the unusually

told me that they had heard that the lemon oil gave the mildew something to
eat.

Before I re-oil with lemon oil, anybody have any thoughts on this mildew
theory?

I've always needed just over 1gal to do a complete job.  Maybe I could do it
thinner, but I don't think so.  When I try to get by with one gallon, I paint
the first third completely, the leading edge of the keel, the complete rudder
and the first foot of depth.  Then I do a very light and incomplete coat on the
remaining part.  Since the water of our lake doesn't get much light penetration
below the first foot, it works reasonably well for slime.  We have no critters
to worry about attaching to the hull.I use WM Bottom Shield now but used Petit
in the past until it got so expensive.  It's usually good for 2yrs, but I don't
race my own boat any longer either.RonWild CheriC&C 30-1STL
