Re: Stus-List Cockpit Locker Leak...

2016-10-16 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
David;

My 1976 model 38-2 has a small locker - perhaps 6-8´deep - under the port
cockpit seat (basically in the area above the quarter berth). The portion of
the seat that forms the lid of that locker is cored with what looks like
luan plywood less than ¼” thick, and the edge of the plywood is actually
exposed at the back edge of the lid. The hinge hardware that pierces the
core was not sealed well (thought the installation IS almost 41 years old)
so the core is rotting and water seeps through the lid into the locker. No
standing water in the locker, there are drain holes in the teak side of the
locker that supports the lid, but all the items in the locker are
chronically wet after a rain storm. And there is not much air flow to dry
stuff out.

One of my winter projects is to remove the lid, replace the core, and make
sure the hardware is properly bedded and goes through solid glass.

The lazarette on the starboard side of the cockpit has a similar arrangement
for the lid, but the small amount of seepage that probably happens goes
right into the bilge and has not shown any evidence of water accumulating.

Also, too. Check the state of the bedding on the plastic thru-hull fittings
that C used in those channels. May be ready for a re-bedding effort.

Re: Stus-List Cockpit Locker Leak...

2016-10-16 Thread Dave Godwin via CnC-List
I’ll second Chuck’s suggestion. On the 37 (somewhat similar to the 40) there
are deck scupper channels that drain to hoses which go to each cockpit scupper
drain. I’ve had issues in the past with the hoses giving up and dumping water
into the port quarter berth and the starboard cockpit locker.

FWIW, I considered glassing the channels in during the refit. They are a “great
in theory, terrible in practice” item from my experience on the 37. The hoses
didn’t drain well and stagnant water always stood in the channels. I left them
and will install shut-off valves for future use for rain-water collection to
the FW tanks if needed. The original drain hoses to the scupper drains will not
be routed to the cockpit scupper through-hulls.

Not sure if Corsair's locker has a similar configuration as the Landfall's, but
my deck drains (scuppers) have below deck hoses that run through the cockpit
lazarettes down to the though hulls. I had a bad piece of hose that had come
loose from the deck fitting resulting in a leaky locker and collected water in
the bilge.

Re: Stus-List AIS VHF

2016-10-16 Thread Dave via CnC-List
Jake, my ICOM m506 vhf is NMEA 2000 compliant and has an. AIS receiver. It
plugs into my accursed seatalk NG network via an adapter cable, and my ray i70
displays the AIS targets. Plug and play. SeatalkNG is an nmea 2000
network with a proprietary cable system intended to make it difficult to use
any non-Raymarine instruments on your network. the data is the same, you must
simply deal with some non–mating plugs.

I have the icom vhf and a garmin GPS antenna on my SeatalkNG network and both
work fine. In one case I added a field attachable nmea2000 connector to a
SeatalkNG cable, in another I bought a raymarine adapter cable.

Dave.

Yes, that would talk to my current plotter, but not to my Raymarine stuff
that is SeaTalk NG. There's probably a converter available somewhere. I
plan on getting a Raymarine plotter soon, so everything will be NG then.

I would like to replace the Bow Roller and Fitting (stemhead?) on my 33-2 with
something stainless that's a little beefier, has an attachment point for my
code zero and provides better gelcoat protection for my self launching anchor.
Has anyone replaced the bow roller fitting. It looks like the stem fitting is
totally separate for the jibstay plate. Would love to hear from anyone who has
experience with removing the stem plate or recommends for a fabricator near

Re: Stus-List AIS VHF

2016-10-16 Thread Frederick G Street via CnC-List
Graham’s correct, IF you have NMEA2000 in place. If you don’t, there’s still an
NMEA0183 interface on the GX6500. If you want to go with a single masthead
antenna, I’d suggest using the Si-Tex MDA3 antenna switcher. By doing this
rather than using two antennas for VHF/AIS, you restrict the AIS’s ability to
receive when you’re transmitting on VHF; but if you use the radio sparingly,
then it’s not much of an issue, and you gain the distance advantage of having
the AIS antenna up high, just like on the VHF.

Reports I’ve seen online suggest an expected availability date in November;
I’ll let the list know when they start to ship.

Subject: Stus-List C 25 galley extenstion

Hello all,

I was looking at a C 25 on sailingtexas.com and it had what looked like a
1 foot by 1 foot plug in extension for the galley. I have hardware on each
side above the foot wells that looks like it could receive a two pieces that
could slide in. Does this ring a bell with anybody? It'd be great to some
how get ahold of the hardware and make the extensions if I needed to.

Thanks,

Mark

Re: Stus-List AIS VHF

2016-10-16 Thread Jake Brodersen via CnC-List
Fred,

My VHF is due for replacement. Adding AIS was always on my to-do list anyway.
This is a great combination. How would I get the AIS info to my chartplotter
(Garmin) or Raymarine instruments? Or should I wait for Raymarine to introduce
their own version of VHF/AIS? I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before other
manufacturers offer similar products.

Well, my prediction a couple of months ago that it would be a while before we
saw combined AIS/VHF transceivers has been proven wrong:

As soon as these are approved and available through distribution, I’ll be able
to price them for C listers; let me know if you’re interested (Joel… :^)
