IIRC one of our listers took a 30-1 across the Atlantic in a boat named Cousin,
was it?  Can't remember the name of the lister except it sounded French. So the
boat can stand up well to offshore work; although I believe he made some
serious prep before the journey.RonWild CheriC&C 30-1STL

Lisle the C&C 30 that your looking at is referred to as the Mark II or 30-2,
great boat I just sold mine after 17 years of ownership. Forward cabin is good
for only 1 adult or 2 children, the aft cabin is very comfortable and 6'10"
long. The 30-2 is a considerably bigger boat than the other two your looking at
and has a wide beam all the way to the stern. The one in your link is more
expensive than others on yachtworld though it also has a long list of nice
upgrades.

Hi all,
Update: I looked at the C&C25 and although it appeared to be a basically solid
boat, it feels a bit too small for a family of 4 and the headroom was a bit
low. I'm hearing a lot of "3-foot-itis" stories from sellers I'm speaking with.
So the search goes on. I've found an interesting 1987 Pearson 27 that looks
promising, here is the link:
https://rochester.craigslist.org/bod/d/1987-pearson-27-2-sailboat/6281575540.html

The one issue with the Pearson is that apparently it got struck by another boat
on the port bow side that required some repair.
Also, I'm going to see a 1987 C&C 30 later today that looks promising. Link
here:
http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1987/C%26C-30-3079275/Rochester/NY/United-States#.Wa-z9MiGNPY

Can someone with a C&C 30' tell me how large the v-birth actually is and share
any experience with the idea of a beginner sailor staring with a boat like this?
thanks,
Lisle

Stus-List Was considering C&c 25

2017-09-06 Thread Jeremy Ralph via CnC-List
Hi Lisle,

We were in a similar situation almost 2 years ago before we bought a C&C 34
for family cruising.

I'd never sailed a keel boat and started looking for a boat. My wife had
never sailed (except when I flipped a laser in a gale at the resort on our
honeymoon).

Since we bought the boat we've had great family adventures for the past two
summers with our kids who were 3 and 6.

In hindsight, I wouldn't be as worried about a bigger boat. We agree that
we're glad we didn't go with anything smaller. [To think I almost bought a
Catalina 22 at one point]. Now we're starting to look at bigger boats...
problem is the attachment and investment into the 34' at this point. For
this reason I'd recommend buying something that has the size and extras
that you might want in the future (perhaps updated rigging, nice gel
coat, repower,
rewire, good battery setup, diesel heater, furling jib, windlass, good
sails, jack lines, masthead antenna, electronics, dodger, canvas, BBQ, ,
...) The cost of these may not be reflected in the market prices.

To get up to speed, I took some cruising courses. Bought the boat and
hired an instructor for a few sessions to help us learn the ropes on our
own boat. We still have so much to learn and we've already learned so
much. We can manage the 34' and everyone has fun. The best weeks of our
summer were spent at anchor in Desolation Sound.

Cheers,

  Jeremy

That C&C 30 is a Mk-2 design. I just bought the same model this spring and
we love it! I decided on this model for many reasons, I hate 2 footitis for
one, it is very easy to single hand, and it is one beautiful boat!

The family we bought it from had 2 daughters (6&9) and the girls had no
problem sharing the v-birth. I find it a bit tight for 2 adults to sleep
comfortably in but we have managed it a couple of times.

I was not in the market for a new boat but a friend of mine decided to sell
his C&C 34 for a price I could not pass up. The problem is I still have my
Catalina 27. It is a great boat and ready to go sailing. Universal Diesel.
I can send anybody who is interested a full list of the equipment. I will
let it go for a great price. If anybody knows someone looking I am a very
motivated seller. Wife is not happy we have a navy. To save my marriage I
have to sell this boat. The boat is in Connecticut on the Housatonic River.

Re: Stus-List Was considering C&c 25

2017-09-06 Thread Dr. Mark Bodnar via CnC-List

Lisle,
I'll offer some of my own thoughts. I sailed/raced dinghies as a
teenager (in Lake Ontario).  Then did a bit of crewing on keel
boats after I finished school.  Years later I wanted back into
sailing - I found a inexpensive 24 ft Mirage (which had it's roots
in C&C) and got my feet wet. I had never docked a large boat
and was well out of my comfort zone even with the 24.

The first time I ran 50m from the hoist to a slip I was sweating
worried I'd bounce off one of the other boats.  Worked out ok, and
I quickly remembered my love for sailing.  Comfort with the 24
built gradually - as I docked in more challenging conditions,
couldn't start my out board and docked under sail, ended up in
stiffer conditions than I expected and had to figure out how to
reef on the fly and sail the boat home into the wind.

Within 2 years I wanted something bigger.  I bought a CS30 (I
came across this list looking for advice on a couple C&C's
that fell though) - first time I was driving that boat had me
right back out of my comfort zone - but it returned quickly.
While the bigger boat has a chance of doing more damage with
higher forces on the lines, more mass to stop or re-direct and
more complex systems, I'd say the learning curve jumping straight
to the 30 wouldn't be too bad.  Especially if you're smarter than
me and found a more experienced buddy to take you out at the
start, get you off on the right foot, plus come out a few times
when the weather is a bit more lively, help you learn.
After 2 years in the Mirage 24, and now almost 4 years in the CS
30 I'm still learning, still uncomfortable at times, but gaining
more and more confidence.  I'm pretty happy with my current size -
there is enough room to take out my 4 teenagers overnight, plenty
of space if just the girlfriend and I want to go together for a
few days, and still manageable size if I'm sailing solo.  The 30
is literally twice the boat (twice the displacement, twice the
interior volume) - which means twice the effort to clean the hull
and repaint in the spring, twice the cost for gear -- but for me
  it's a good balance point.
Best of luck

If I may suggest, don’t buy a boat that is too small. It is not easy to sell
your boat (for the money it is worth) to upgrade to a few feet more. Buy the
boat you want to have. I don’t think sailing a 30 is that much different (more
difficult) than a 27.

Not to mention that a Pearson would never look as good as a C&C (-;).

We easily spend 50-60 nights a year on board. Lovely boat. Have taken her

Can someone with a C&C 30' tell me how large the v-birth actually is and share
any experience with the idea of a beginner sailor staring with a boat like this?
thanks,
Lisle

A C&C 30 > than a Pearson 27 and perhaps a 30. The C&C 30 MK I is very much a
"real boat" capable of major offshore work if you ever want to do it.
Given the depressed boat market, I see no reason to go smaller than you need.

Hi Lisle;

I acquired my C&C 30 MK1 last year. I love it. My Destrier is practically all
original with no self tailing winches or roller furling headsail. Part of it's
charm to me. The only issue beyond my ability is that mine came with a couple
of soft spots. Especially the cockpit sole where PO installed a handpump.
Plenty of room below for 4 with over 6' of headroom. Stands up to almost
anything you would choose to sail in.

What about one of these?

https://www.westmarine.com/buy/head-snorkeling-equipment--sea-vu-dry-full-face-mask--P018001776?recordNum=1

I paid more than this for a good quality dive mask that was supposed to have
been designed to seal even if you had a mustache. It doesn’t work very well. So
I’ve been thinking about one of these full face masks. They go on sale at WM
about twice a year.

Unfortunately I suffered a heart attack @ 2.5 years ago and haven?t had the
time to dedicate to my C&C and I need to part ways with it.  I?m willing to
part with her and not looking for much in return.  She has a full load of sails
in very good condition.  She?s not been sailed since the heart attack or had
much maintenance.  I?ve had the hull cleaned (diver) a few times and her
topside washed but having difficult finding someone to wash again and she needs
her hull cleaned again.  She?s a moored vessel at Port of Brownsville Marina,
Bremerton, WA.  A very nice and very reasonable priced marina, you can see it
on Google Earth.  She also has a 8HP diesel that hasn?t been started since the
heart attack.

I have title in hand and will consider any reasonable offer.  I don?t have a
trailer for the C&C or she?d be out of the water.  She?s currently moored at
A-48 and the office is open daily 7 days a week.  I can meet anyone who wants
to see her.

Stus-List was considering C&C 25, now Pearson 27 or C&C 30

2017-09-06 Thread Lisle Kingery, PhD via CnC-List
Hi all,

Update: I looked at the C&C25 and although it appeared to be a basically
solid boat, it feels a bit too small for a family of 4 and the headroom was
a bit low. I'm hearing a lot of "3-foot-itis" stories from sellers I'm
speaking with. So the search goes on. I've found an interesting 1987
Pearson 27 that looks promising, here is the link:

https://rochester.craigslist.org/bod/d/1987-pearson-27-2-sailboat/6281575540.html

The one issue with the Pearson is that apparently it got struck by another
boat on the port bow side that required some repair.

Also, I'm going to see a 1987 C&C 30 later today that looks promising. Link
here:

http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1987/C%26C-30-3079275/Rochester/NY/United-States#.Wa-z9MiGNPY

Can someone with a C&C 30' tell me how large the v-birth actually is and
share any experience with the idea of a beginner sailor staring with a boat
like this?

thanks,

Lisle
