Re: Stus-List AIS Improvement

2017-12-27 Thread Andrew Burton via CnC-List
I use both, but I generally like iNavX better as you get more info on each
chart. I was looking at Navionics charts of Nova Scotia yesterday trying to
find Lunenburg and I had to zoom in so far I couldn't tell where on the coast I
was. Place names and even Bay names are very few and far between.
And of course there's the whole Vestas incident in the Volvo last year...

The whole iNavX-Navionics thing is really pissing me off. Navionics is
*so much* better than iNavX, it feels like about 3 generations newer at
least. But it does not do a lot of things and AIS and data over Wifi are
two of the things it does not do :(

iNavX is clunky to use and not all that intuitive, but it does do all
that and a ton more, if you can figure out how to do it. It can even use
Navionics charts, for MORE money than the entire Navionics program.
Charts I already bought once too!

I have hit a snag with my project. My CP180 plotter is refusing to
take AIS input on any NMEA port.
The firmware version is from 2008, so I think I'll be sending it
back to S-H for a firmware upgrade. This will cost about $35, which

IMHO is quite reasonable and also a nice contrast to brand R,
which tends to tell you "buy a new one" as the answer to any issue
with any old equipment.
Another issue is not a big deal but just odd, the AIS seems to not
be sending out the GPS per satellite signal quality string. On the
computer and the plotter I can see the position and HDOP just
fine, but no individual satellite signal levels.

On the good news side, the waterproof junction boxes and glands I
got from Amazon are working out well.

Stus-List C 34/36 kitchen shelf

2017-12-27 Thread Ben Sutton 1 via CnC-List
I am considering removing the kitchen shelf next to the sink in my C 34+. It
is the one with the metal post running through one end and attached to the
cabinetry at the other. My thinking is as follows:
1. It completely obscures the counter underneath and makes it more or less
impossible to use the plate tray behind that counter under the shelf.
2. It is sometimes useful to put things on with the ability to slide a chopping
board (and only a chopping board) underneath it.
3. I notice that later models of this design eg. 1991, do not have the shelf. I
suspect there is a good reason for this.

Has anyone removed this shelf on their boat?
If so how do you do it?
Did you regret it afterwards or did it turn out to be a good thing?

Any input much appreciated.

Re: Stus-List West Marine is So Funny

2017-12-27 Thread Andrew Burton via CnC-List
After putting most of the decent chandleries out of business, West has become
the walmart of marine equipment. The quality of gear is consistently low
because they impose so many conditions and price controls on suppliers that the
suppliers have to cut corners to make a profit. looking at the West Mega store
in Newport, most floor space is taken by clothing, which is obviously where the
money is.

Randy,

I’m surprised you got rope. From my experience with West, I would assume that
if you ordered Spinnaker sheets, you would be sent new linens for the V-Berth
with pictures of pretty sailboats printed on them…

Years ago in a different employment situation, I toured dyWest Marine’s
warehouse facility in Hollister, CA. There is absolutely no resemblance to a
marine store. PFD’s are set on pallet racks next to fenders, boom vangs, and
designer sandals, with no apparent order and the folks picking orders have
likely never seen a marina let alone have any knowledge of what they’re
shipping. They will also stock only one of the specific item that is ALWAYS
sold in pairs, just so you either need to drive to another store, or wait until
it comes from their distribution center.

To take advantage of West Marine’s 50% off sale on yacht braid, I asked for a
new set of spinnaker sheets for Christmas. Gave my family the exact specs,
links to the web page, etc. Here it is verbatim from an email on 11/24/17:

I would like to get some new spinnaker sheets for Grenadine.

West Marine is having a 50% off sale on yacht braid through Monday:
https://www.westmarine.com/buy/new-england-ropes--solid-color-sta-set-polyester-yacht-braid--P002_071_001_004

Here are the specifications of what I would like:

* 60 feet of 3/8”, solid green

* 60 feet of 3/8”, solid red

At the sale price of $0.79 per foot, that’s $47 per sheet.

You can order online from West Marine’s website, and ship for free to the local
West Marine store for pickup.

So, I open the gift on Christmas morning, and my daughters have to explain to
me that West Marine sent all 60 feet of the green line, but only 14 feet of the
red line. They’ll ship the remaining 46 feet of the red line separately,
according to their shipping statement :) Lol.

Randy,

They f'd up my order too! Instead of 130 feet of 10 mm Endura I got 130
feet of 3/16 Sta-Set. Plus the item listed on-line as chafe cover turned
out to be line. One call and they shipped the correct line to the store so
I could do an exchange.

Joe,

Don't blame you for being unhappy about Navionics!

If you just want to receive AIS and have WiFi, the Daisy 2 is even
cheaper.

I need to buy iNavX or NobelTec too so I can test the WiFi.
