I use a soft shackle to tie on a spring line at the dock. It is a continuous
length of 3 strand that has an alpine butterfly at the correct location. The
continuous loop stays on the boat. The soft shackle is luggage tagged to the
alpine butterfly so that it doesn't get lost when open. Then the soft shackle
is attached to the loop.

At foreign slips, I use the same loop on the boat to hold mooring lines which
are considerably too large to fit through my toe rail. I like to use a sheet
bend to connect the loop to the line. The advantage is that the loop only
needs to be large enough for the line to pass through a single time.

lifelines back to the primary winch. I configured it such that, when dropped
on the pier's outermost cleat, it will stop the boat and keep the stern from
swinging away from the pier. Didn't actually try it but I am optimistic.

The challenge will be dropping it on the cleat if single handing. It's a
floating pier and the cleat is a couple feet below the toe rail.

BTW, I will attach the line to the toe rail with a soft shackle. That will
prevent damage to the toe rail anodizing as well as minimize damage to the dock

OK, after 20 years of ownership, I'm pretty good at driving Touche'.
Touche's "home" slip in Louisiana is in a fairly protected bayou, has both
outboard and midships pilings on either side and a port side finger pier.
I can competently back Touche' in using propwalk, etc. without touching any
 pilings. Whoopee.

However, the "temporary" slip I use in Pensacola is a whole different
scenario. First, it has a starboard side finger pier which extends to just
short of full boat length. Second, it is a double slip with NO pilings
between Touche' and my neighbor, an IP 37. Third, the prevailing wind is
 from the starboard side.

In Pensacola, I dock Touche' bow in for privacy and scenic view
issues. Docking stern in isn't a desirable option because the bow
will fall off towards my neighbor while docking and looking at a
scenic bayou is preferable to looking at a working boatyard.

So, docking bow in with a wind from starboard and prop walk which pulls
the boat to port is a challenge. The wind pushes the boat dramatically to
port when docking. The prop walk exacerbates the movement to port. The
wind and prop walk both working against the boat sucks.

I've tried several techniques with limited to moderate success. The
best the Admiral and I have come up with is to approach at a slight upwind
angle to the finger pier, have a spring/warp line attached a bit forward of
midships, have crew leap off the boat and secure the spring to the
outermost cleat on the finger pier to stop forward motion. Once the line
is secure, we warp the stern in with forward propulsion and left rudder and
secure a stern line. The stern still tries to swing to port midway through
this process but we manage it.

Now for my main issue. Docking single handed.

Re: Stus-List Galvanic corrosion

2018-08-10 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
I am a bit late to this, but FYI:
Galvanic corrosion is caused by two different types of metal in water that are
electrically connected. The “less noble” metal is the one that corrodes, which
is why we use zincs (or magnesium or aluminum).
There has to be a path between the metals for this to happen. This can get much
much worse when on shorepower because all the boats in the marina end up wired
together via the green ground wire connection. If no one buys new zincs but
you, guess who supplies the entire marina with anode material? YOU DO! Galvanic
isolators are 100% needed for any boat on shore power for this reason.

The other form of corrosion is stray current corrosion. This does not need
different metals to work, just electricity flowing through the water. The
current moves metal from one place to the other, this is how electroplating
works. This can be very complicated to track down and can do a vast amount of
damage very quickly. There are a lot of different ways this can happen, but
imagine a boat with the keel connected to the ground bus, a negative ground
engine, and a SSB ground plate with DC connection through to the radio. We now
have 3 different underwater metals connected to the negative side of the DC
system. If the onboard ground bus and wiring are not perfect, some current will
flow through the water too.

Jim, thanks, they don't have it; they suggested the same thing that Russ
did...have slugs put on the boltrope!

One of the best rigging shops in the U.S. is in Miami, give them a call. They
may have an idea what suppliers C used for spars over the years, or may even
know what part asking about.

J need help identifying a piece of plastic that is an insert into the slot of
my boom, (1985 C 37); this piece effectively makes the slot narrower so that
the sail boltrope fits and stays in the slot. I have a loose footed main, but
the sail cover uses that slot (Doyle cradle cover). The insert was on the boat
when I bought it 4 years ago and has not been an issue, however, now it is
breaking into pieces, presumably from UV deterioration and I need to replace
that piece of plastic...the Doyle folks say they aren't familiar with the

Hi Richard,

Why not get 1/2 dozen, or so, regular sail slugs that fir the largeropening and
have them sewn to the Doyle cover? It's not like you need acontinuos bolt rope
to do the intend job (of holding the bottom of thecover to the boom).

Re: Stus-List Boom insert

2018-08-10 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Richard,

That might be a challenge. You might start by searching the list
archives. There have been a few mentions of spar manufacturers. I suspect
that the key will be the build date of your boat. That is, C may have
used a single spar supplier in the mid 80's. Perhaps other owners of mid
80's C will respond.

I know that Touche's mast is a Klacko. I sent a picture of a cross section
of it with measurements to a couple spar manufacturers. Fortunately, a
representative of Klacko responded positively. Doesn't do much for me
since they no longer make that extrusion.

I seem to recall a few owners stating their spars were made by Offshore.

A long shot is to call Rig Rite. They know a lot about extrusions but
getting to talk to them is always a crapshoot.

I am not an expert, but I imagine that the anode would decay much slower (if it
was the wrong one). Btw. The Chandlery has both (zinc and Mg); you just have to
make sure that you order the right one.

Also, if you have direct access to one, you should be able to check what metal
it is made from (it should be stamped on it).

Richard,

One of the best rigging shops in the U.S. is in Miami, give them a call.
They may have an idea what suppliers C used for spars over the years, or
may even know what part asking about.

Joel; thanks; now, how do I find out the manufacturer of my mast? I have

Re: Stus-List Mast Rake for C 41

2018-08-10 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
1 degree aft. That's 0.01745 times the P dimension for your boat aft of
the mast along the boom. I see several P dimensions listed for the 41.

For a 50 foot P it's 10.4 inches.
For a 45 foot P it's 9.4 inches

Then plumb bob measurement for Honey's mast is 11" aft of the mast at the

Almost every C mast I have seen called for a 1% Rake.
For my boat, around 60 feet OA from the keel, that amounts to a plum bob
around 11" behind the mast on deck.

Re: Stus-List Boom insert

2018-08-10 Thread bushmark4--- via CnC-List

J need help identifying a piece of plastic that is an insert into the slot of
my boom, (1985 C 37); this piece effectively makes the slot narrower so that
the sail boltrope fits and stays in the slot. I have a loose footed main, but
the sail cover uses that slot (Doyle cradle cover). The insert was on the boat
when I bought it 4 years ago and has not been an issue, however, now it is
breaking into pieces, presumably from UV deterioration and I need to replace
that piece of plastic...the Doyle folks say they aren't familiar with the
piece; there are no sail makers or reps in our area...
