Re: Stus-List Mast step repair

2018-11-21 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Jim,

The most critical thing is to measure everything before you start.
Granted, the step has subsided so you need to account for that. Measure
against a known reference point.

Next, make sure you understand and make accommodation for drainage from the
fore section of the boat. This may be as simple as laying a short piece of
PVC pipe in the bilge before you start the job. Also consider any cable
runs under the step, if any.

Consider where you are going to transmit the load. The "shoulders" of the
bilge should be fairly strong. The shoulders are where the hull turns
downward to the bilge.

Other than those two considerations, wing it!

You may be able to use a car jack and 2x4's to lift the cabin roof and
remove the compression post will you do the work.

When I rebuilt Touche's mast step in 2000, Here's the steps I took.

   - Cleaned out all the old rotted wood from the original step
   - Sanded the shoulders to reveal clean fiberglass
   - Cut a piece of cardboard for the floor leaving a nice gap for drainage
   and cables
   - Formed more cardboard for the fore and aft ends
   - Laid in multiple layers of epoxy glass spanning between the shoulders
of the bilge until it reached the proper elevation

Here's pics:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1WK_x9fw5BbqbNJN1UoduAQ68AJ2UuUcu
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1sxolf_U_8EDzVeLUUYghorYhe4h_nLaP

Note the marks denoting locations. The top of the epoxy glass block can be
seen between the step box and the lip of the sole.

Pretty much a brute force solution. That block of epoxy glass will last
millenia.

Re: Stus-List Mast step repair

2018-11-21 Thread James Hesketh via CnC-List
Thanks for the reply Neil

My 26 is a bit more complicated -- the mast itself is stepped on the cabin
top with a king post extending down to the support in the bilge, It's the
support that has failed. I'm referring to that support as the mast step in
this case as it is where the load is concentrated.

Due to the warping of the "step" the cabin top and bulkheads have deformed
by a half-inch or so and will need to be reshaped.

As you say, the cabin sole covers the outboard sections of the that spans
over the keel at the turn of the bilge. I'm planing on cutting out those
sections of the sole for access and room to glass in the new support.

Guess I'll figure it out as I go.

Thanks again,

I use Amsoil products for all my engines. The boat gets 15w40 heavy
duty/marine diesel oil. It had a high TBN of 12. As the acids accumulate
in the oil the TBN will diminish towards 0. I send oil samples for
analysis. Typically in high compression engines which accumulate a lot of
soot/exhaust in the oil, the TBN is the limiting factor as to when the oil
is exhausted.

It's cool to trend oil properties over time and be able to understand the
changes and what they mean about engine health. Kinda like a blood test
for your engine.

Re: Stus-List Mast step repair

2018-11-21 Thread Neil Gallagher via CnC-List

Jim,

Not sure how this would play out on a 26, but I had to replace the mast
step on my 35-1, and while simple in theory, was not quite so easy to
do.  Basically pull the mast, chop out all the old step support and
replace.  The support was a glassed-over stack of plywood that spanned
the bilge well.  What made it a PITA on the 35-1 was that the plywood,
if the same size as what was originally used, would not fit through the
width of the opening in the cabin sole.  I was able to fit a fiberglass
board (from McMaster Carr) for the lowest level,  then built up
equivalent thickness with layers of glass cloth that easily fit through
the opening.  Others have used various other schemes to deal with this,
depending on access.

As you say, should be straightforward, depends on how open the bilge
area is.  Also make sure you mark well where the step was.

Mike,

Around two years ago, I decided to stop racing the Enterprise and found
incredible joy in racing O.P.B.! (Other People’s Boats).

No longer do I worry about having enough crew on any given day or night — And,
even better, when something breaks when racing someone else’s boat, if you
listen real carefully, you can actually hear the little spartan guy on my
American Express card sigh in relief.

And, yeah, I get to have more batteries, water, a bimini, lounge chairs,
pillows, a stack pack and lots of other cruising comforts that can just live on
board.

It was fun racing the boat, but this is way better.

Stus-List Mast step repair

2018-11-21 Thread James Hesketh via CnC-List
Next week's project is the repair/replacement of the mast step on my 1978
C 26.

It looks to be a fairly straightforward job, and I have a rigger lined up
to help with loosening and re-tuning the mast afterwards.

Has anyone here done this themselves -- any insight, advice, other things
to look for, tricks of the trade, potential problems that may crop up?

Thanks, in advance.

Re: Stus-List Chartplotter mounting

2018-11-21 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
I have a Raymarine ES 7 and used a Navpod pod on a stainless steel arm which
allowed me to mount the MFD above the compass without needing a taller pedestal
guard. One thing I wanted was to make sure my wiring and electrical connectors
aren’t exposed to the elements, and a guard mounted enclosure achieved that.
It wasn’t inexpensive, but it came with a pre-cut faceplate to the specific
instrument I bought and I didn’t need to completely reconfigure my helm. All
the wiring runs inside the stainless arm and goes into the pedestal guard and
down through the cockpit floor using Edson’s new stainless guard feet. I
purchased it at Defender’s warehouse sale at a substantial savings over retail.
I was reluctant to go with a taller or angled pedestal guard because my
traveler sits immediately in front of the pedestal. Having the mainsheet wrap
around an electrical instrument or pedestal guard in a crash gybe can be
somewhat problematic..

Subject: Stus-List Chartplotter mounting

Hi all, I purchased a 7" Raymarine chartplotter for my 33 mkii. I am looking
for mounting suggestions. Should I get a "pod" and, if so, from whom? I don't
really want a large, disproportionate one. Or should I just make my own out of
plastic?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

+1 for what Edd said.

I used a RAM mount (you need to put together the configuration yourself, as
none of the “kits” would probably work for you). It allows infinite adjustment
and can be rotated backwards and forwards (for driving from in-front of the
wheel). The total cost was under $100.

I don’t have good pictures, but these should give you an idea:

Mike,

If you get a pod, make sure your pedestal guard is tall enough to hold it and
keep the chartplotter far enough from your compass so as not to affect its
accuracy (your Raymarine manual will tell you how far away it needs to be.)

Additionally, the downside to a pod is that you can only use the display from
directly behind the wheel. Personally, even when motoring, I like to drive from
the sides. As such, I mounted mine with a rail clamp so I can change the angle.
It may not be as pretty as a pod install, but certainly more functional.
All the best,

Edd
