Re: Stus-List B Boat rotation on screen

2019-06-27 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Bill,

I have the same compass. Here is a link to the manual.
http://www.echomastermarine.co.uk/assets/manuals/Simrad/Autopilot/Compass/RFC35R%20Instruction%20Manual.pdf

Do you have a simrad/robnet auto pilot? AP 20, 21, 22, 35?

Is your RFC35R setup for NMEA 0183?

I have an AP 22 and J300X autopilot. To calibrate I have to navigate to
the calibration menu and over the course of ~2 minutes perform a complete
and even circle. When it is done calibrating it will go to the next menu
where I can confirm calibration and adjust the offset. During this time I
drive dead on each of the cardinal directions - 90, 180, 270, 360 as
indicated by the GPS. If I find that there is a consistent deviation from
between the GPS direction and the RFC35R direction then I can enter an
offset number. I believe that this offset is generally intended to correct
for minor errors resulting from unsquare mounting and the interference of
objects on board. I would look to see how the RFC35R is mounted. There is
a Forward orientation. Then I would drive in each of the cardinal
directions and see if you can determine a consistent deviation. Next see
if you can program that value into the chartplotter as part of the
calibration.

If none of those things work then try rotating the orientation of the unit
to see if that has any effect.

Let us know what you find.

Re: Stus-List keel bolt nut

2019-06-27 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Mine was like Chuck's.

I found the wire to be shockingly small and the copper terminals heavily
corroded and poorly terminated. If relatively low voltage and current was
able to attach the 1/4-20 bolt to the washer I figure that the current and
voltage of lightning will probably be enough to detach the bolt. I made a
failed attempt to drill and tap the keel bolt. By failed I mean that the
tap must not have been cutting square in the hole and I ultimately ended up
breaking the tap after successfully cutting threads about 1/2 inch deep.
The hardened steel of the tap was impossible to drill or extract. This
would have been the absolute best method had it cut square and not broken.
I still recommend it. BTW I was planning for a 3/4 inch long by 3/8ths SS
bolt for anchoring the wiring terminal to the keel bolt.

Instead of bolting directly to the keel bolt I ended up making a ground
plate out of 3/16th thick plate aluminum. I cut a hole big enough for a
keel bolt. I left a tang of metal extending out to the side. In this tang
I drilled and tapped an hole for the 3/8ths bolt. I locked the bolt in
place with a nut and then sandwiched the ground wire terminal between the
nut another.

My mast end of the wire just terminated at the metal step - again poorly
with no real attachment to the mast. Instead I reassembled with a 3/8ths
bolt through the mast to act as a stud and then used a nut and washer to
hold the new ground wire terminal.

Thanks Dennis,

Love your comments. The yards around Annapolis are crazy.

The boat is hauled now and the shaft is out so I want to make the repair
myself. I have the tools for grinding and West System epoxy and 404 and
waterproof fairing epoxy. I haven't seen the crack, so I can only imagine.

I think I would find the crack, grind it to expose good fiberglass, and fill
with Thixo FLex Epoxy. Inside the tube, I would insert a roll of Mylar to
create a smooth finish. Inside the boat, I would add 1708 to the shaft log
where ever I can to beef it up and strengthen it and fair with Total Fair
waterproof epoxy compound.

Am I on the right track?

Is this a new occurrence? Did you check the area around the fluxgate for
metal and wires?

I take it the fluxgate has been installed a while? If it was a new install
I'd say check the orientation of the fluxgate. Do you have a control
instrument where you can adjust the compass, i'e. add/subtract 135?

Interesting issue.

On my 26 the wire ran down in a groove between the king post and the

which is a very shallow section of bilge forward of all keel bolts.

I would drill and tap the closest backing plate with a 10-32 or 1/4-20

Does it agree with your binnacle compass? :)

First, check the course setting on your chartplotter. Is your chartplotter
heading set to magnetic? If so, swing (calibrate) your fluxgate compass.
If that doesn't correct the problem, check the area around your fluxgate
for anything metal or electrical which may interfere with the reading.

If that doesn't solve the issue, set your chartplotter heading to true.
You'll still have the problem but you won't see it. :)

Subject: [EXTERNAL] Stus-List B Boat rotation on screen

I am having difficulty correcting the rotation of a little boat icon on the
screen to the direction I am going. I am currently traveling at 238 degrees,
and the boat is pointing around 360. Does this require a compass calibration,
or is it some simple setting? This is also screwing up my true wind and
apparent wind speed.

Thanks,

If you’re going to do Mystic, which I also recommend, forget Brewers and stay
in the Mystic Seaport. It’s a short walk into town, your boat is on display in
the museum, and you have the whole place to yourself at night. Our first C
rendezvous was there and it was a blast.

Re: Stus-List Survey About Racing

2019-06-27 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
1. Where do you race? Nova Scotia. Mostly Halifax Harbour and Approaches.

2. What wind conditions are the rule and exception there? Evening races in
summer 10 knots SW. Spring windier and more from North

3. What kind of courses do you sail? Mostly WL but RC now throwing in a
reaching leg approx. every 2nd race

4. What sail plan do you fly? Full inventory. 155 genoa, 140 genoa, 100 jib,
sym spin, main

5. What model of boat are you racing? Frers 33

6. What PHRF rating do you race with? (please list adjustments) 114

7. What is your boat’s fastest point of sail? Downwind reach apparent wind just
aft of beam

8. Is there leapfrogging in your races, or do boat-for-boat positions stay
fairly constant? Yes. Which side of course you pick makes a huge difference

9. How many boats are you usually competing against? 15 – 16 in our class on
good night 10-12 on other nights

10. In general, how well do you perform in racing results? Top 5 most nights

And now a few more subjective questions:

11. Do you think your boat’s rating assumes you’ll race it on a particular kind
of course with a particular sail plan? PHRF is designed for triangle courses.
Our boat rating favours WL a bit

12. How do you think your local rating authority determines the rating for your
boat? We use 5 comparison areas with similar wind conditions and fleet makeup.
Average of those areas for a rating for a model new to area. Reviews use median
back corrected rating in area regattas. Boat must be consistently sailing 12
or more sec/mile faster than rating to even be considered for a change. Any
further questions contact me directly as I am very involved in this

13. What do you think are the most important factors in your performance
against your competition? Boat prep, crew work and going the right way

14. What do you think are the most important race tactics for beating your
competition? Getting clean air and sailing where the wind and currents are most
favourable

Thanks all, I have a dock reservation pending! Champlin's has a two night
minimum so I'm trying my luck at the New Harbor Boat Basin first. If
neither of those work out, I'll try my luck at Fishers Island or somewhere
else up the CT coast.

I had not considered Cuttyhunk Island as a possibility, and will definitely
add it to the itinerary of a future cruise. Sounds much more my speed
versus Block. Thanks for the recommendation, Damian!

Tom,

I second Edd's comments. Go for a slip. Choice is limited - many of the
slips are too shallow.

When we lived in Connecticut, Block was the most fun part of our summer
cruise. Rather than deal with the uncertainty of finding a mooring, we
would book a "slip" at Champlin's. I use the term slip advisedly, because
Champlin's pile the boats in, and you will inevitably find yourself rafted
3 deep. However, that is all part of the fun. The place is a summer-long
party (80% power boaters), with a bar by the fuel dock, music, pizza,
ice-cream, cinema, pool. Really a lot of fun - and that is before you even
leave the marina.

If you have an extra couple of days, Cuttyhunk is about 35 miles further.
The "anti-Block". Well worth the visit.

Hello Listers,

I’d like to conduct a little survey about racing, tapping into the broad
experience, geography, and boat diversity represented on this list.

What prompted this is a discussion in my club about ratings, which expanded
into a discussion about courses, tactics, and relative performance.  I’d like
to get perspective from the collective knowledge on this list, to add into that
discussion.

So here are some fairly objective survey questions, for those of you who race
your boats:

1. Where do you race?
2. What wind conditions are the rule and exception there?
3. What kind of courses do you sail?
4. What sail plan do you fly?
5. What model of boat are you racing?
6. What PHRF rating do you race with? (please list adjustments)
7. What is your boat’s fastest point of sail?

Thanks Dave; we just replaced the hatches with new, so I don't think they
reverse... however, I'll check and see; the midship hatch is used for
ventilation only so it isn't much of a issue...

Getting rid of the verdamte topping lift is such a wonderful thing, and the
Garhauer vang is such a bargain. Guido made custom brackets for the mast base
and boom for each of the vangs – included in the price. The one on the 25 was
bought about 1996 and the one on the 38 about 2004.     Rick Brass Washington,

I bought a rigid vang for my 30 MK I from Garhauer three years ago for $495.
I’ve been happy with it.

Cheers,
Randy

Listers,

My rigid boom vang has seen better days and I’m looking to do a replacement.
Can anyone recommend a good option for a boat in the 37-40’ range that won’t
break the bank?

All the best,

Edd
