Peak winds in Halifax in the 60 knot range, boat is OK. Power still out, we

2019-09-09 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
After having a time during Isabel with line adjusting I decided never again
messing with that all night and every hurricane since I am out of here for a
mooring. At least for Isabel I was smart enough to reverse all the lines so the
adjustable end was on the boat and I didn’t have to climb off and go diving
underwater to loosen lines or tighten them. The other thing I did was *not use
cleats*! Plenty of idiots did nothing at all with their lines and their
too-short lines pulled up hard on the cleats that were through-bolted to the
dock planks. Said planks are not bolted down and the nails pulled out! So
walking around you had to not step in the invisible underwater trap with nails
in it ☹

Hello all,
I got a pretty good Boat Bite from the Piling Port side Entry Gate !! There was
an old bolt about 5 ft up on Piling that got Halcyon ☹ I had no issue with
this in Florence. However at my Marina in Oriental NC wind swung around outta
the west Friday for a solid 4 hrs with Gusts to 70 MPH pushing her onto the
piling. I was not set up (Good enough) for that direction. I was planning on a
9 ft surge so may have left a bit too much slack? lesson learned ! Will add
Fender Board for the next one for sure !!

I believe it just cosmetic but No idea how to repair. Will hit it with hose to
be sure joint was not compromised.

slower now with the drag on the Starboard tack if the rail is buried !!

You probably need a good fiberglass/paint repair at least--assuming the
rub-rail, etc. is not messed up.

I had a similar 'incident' when docking against a strong current abeam a few
years ago in Beaufort--my fault for even trying the maneuver!

However, the fiberglass/paint crew at my go-to marina (Sailcraft in this case)
fixed up the mess so well I could not find the original gouges nor the new
paint vs the old paint--they did about an 8 ft fore and aft section from cove
strip to waterline IIRC.

Like the commercial for Service-Pro (?), their work was so good "...like it
never even happened!" which, according to the owner at that time, was part of
their job!

Re: Stus-List hurricane check in

2019-09-09 Thread Olivier Chatot via CnC-List
It was alright in the Lesser Antilles. St Lucia and Martinique were hit by
winds of around 30 knots and heavy rain, causing some rivers to overflow.

We were lucky here. The air was dry and there was sand in the atmosphere in
the Atlantic when Dorian was approaching, which prevented it from gaining
strength before reaching the Antilles. It was just a tropical storm when it
arrived. And it was small.

I was in Grenada (120 nm SSW of St Lucia), and it didn't rain. The wind
shifted very quickly, but it was weaker than usual (5-10 knots), as it
happens when you're south of a passing disturbance, where the disturbance's
westerlies are cancelled by the easterly trade winds.

Also. Purcell’s Cove marina in Halifax was destroyed. There were no boats
docked but a very nice C 32 that moors in that cove is high up on the rocks
with its mast leaning against a power line. That cove took the wind head on
from the East which is not sheltered

In Herring Cove (our neighbourhood) the boathouses and fishing shacks on north
side of the cover are all gone

Still no power here

The eyewall hit us dead on as a CAT2 here in Halifax. I extended Breakaweigh's
mooring lines by an extra 10' and weighed them down with a 15lb dead weight as
a snubber. I tied an extra line from the mooring line ends to the mast in case
the cleats somehow failed. Cleared the decks of everything (sails, dodger,
bimini, etc.) and left the boat. We made it - no damage. All of the boats in
our mooring field were above water and secure when we came to check on things.

Fine up in Cape Breton, sustained winds not much more than 35 - 40 knots with gusts to 55 overnight.A few boats around Baddeck and Little Bras d'Or that were on mooring had issues‎, either broke free or sank. No problems at Ben Eoin Yacht Club where we were tied up. A friend spent the night on his boat, next to ours and sent a few text updates overnight. Our power just blinked a few times but stayed on. A number of trees are down around town so quite a few power outages in town and even more out in the country. Loaned my little Honda EU2000i generator to neighbours who are without power, due to a tree taking out power on their street. From news report there seems to be more damage in and around Halifax.Ken H. All at our club are ok. However surge took water above fixed docks which
caused a lot of excitements for the two very large yachts sheltering there
