Re: Stus-List Atomic 4 replacement

2019-12-23 Thread Neil Gallagher via CnC-List

Ian,

I've had my A-4 out and back in twice since I bought the boat.  In my
experience you're on the right track, some timber under the engine to
slide it forward under the companionway.  My only addition was a chain
fall hung from a 4x4 over the companionway to take most of the weight
and to pull it forward.  I'm not sure of the 29-1's layout, but I'd
suspect you could do something like that.

Once the engine was into the cabin, I had it lifted in/out by a yard
crane once, and I did it myself the other time.  When I did it myself I
used the boom as a crane, with the main halyard to lift the aft end of
the boom. Actually used my main sheet as the block and tackle to hoist
the engine, swung the boom over the side and lowered it to the ground.
It worked ok but reinstalling I used the chainfall, was more secure than
the sheet.  And I got some sarcastic remark about hoping my insurance
was paid up from the yard manager when he saw it

One major issue I can see is how to lift the engine off the mounts
when the engine is under the cockpit.  My engine builder who has done
this a few times (but can't any more due to his age) suggested I slide
a 6x4 under the engine then use a 2x4 as a pivot and raise the engine
by having someone stand on the 6X4.  Then once free of the mounts,
gently slide it back into the saloon and lift it out through the
companionway.  Has anyone tried this?

I have lots of able-bodied helpers to help me so manpower won't be a
problem.

I am going to do all this at the dock, so no crane to help with the
lift.  And while the engine is out, I'll remove the fuel tank and
clean it out.  I'm sure there's crud at the bottom.

I'll document the experience for the benefit of others and share it
once it's done.

Re: Stus-List PAC CUP

2019-12-23 Thread Ian Matthew via CnC-List
Hi Pete,

I have raced the PacCup twice. Last time was 2018 and I was the Navigator
on a Cal 40.
I used OpenCPN as my navigation tool with the Weather Routing plug in. I
had modified the polars to avoid getting routes too deep (as far as DDW -
skipper was not comfortable with trying to sail downwind at angles greater
than 165 and even then...)
Before the race we used Weatherguy (Rick Shema, www.weatherguy.com - he's
based in Hawaii) who gave me a comprehensive report 24 hours before our
start and also a telephone call on the way to the start. (We were not
allowed 'outside help' during the race.) His advice was really good.

Feel free to contact me off list for more information. Are you planning on
doing the race next year?

Hey Dennis,

Next time you come to Colorado for skiing, check out
https://www.magnoliacajundining.com . It
just opened a month ago and looks very legit. I went down yesterday and met
the owner and staff; most are from Lafayette. Some brunch patrons from Baton
Rouge said it was the real deal.

Cheers,
Randy

Re: Stus-List Racing - RC protesting

2019-12-23 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
In Chester Race Week one year the RC protested us on Koobalibra (C 115) as we
finished for failing to honour the appropriate turning mark. At the same time
as we finished we (Koobalibra) protested the RC for not clearly identifying the
course (3 yellow tetrahedrons for three separate courses in the same
approximate location that was described pre-start). Koobalibra won the protest
and it was witnessed by none other than Rodney Johnston. The race was thrown
out of the series as a result.
