John,
The levers you describe are no longer made by Edson. It’s conceivable that you
could 3D print a new one from the existing pieces but chances are good you will
need to swap out engine controls to either an Edson 870 or 816 control housing.
Your cables would get re routed inside the pedestal and you would lose the
extra tubes.

I believe the control on the boat is currently a model 737 control.

We went with an West Marine (ICOM) DSC VHF with a WHAM (Wireless Remote
Mic) for the helm along with a Standard Horizon HX870.  The fixed VHF
does not have internal GPS but I hooked up our old Garmin 276C GPS to
feed position to it.  Nice to have backups.  The Garmin powers up and
shuts down with the radio.  I considered upgrading to a SH with AIS but
decided the old set up still works fine.  Originally had the radio and
WHAM on our old Redwing 35 and moved it over to the Mark III.

Re: Stus-List VHF Radio with Outside Extension Mic

2020-07-06 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
The VHF radio is the one thing I tend to upgrade frequently. I think I'm
on my 3rd or 4th fixed VHF since 1999. In my opinion, it's the single most
important piece of safety equipment on the boat.

I upgraded when Standard Horizon came out with RAM's. I upgraded when they
added AIS. I didn't mind re-running the RAM cable for each upgrade. Like
others, I like a RAM with the capability of shooting 25 watts into the
sky. I also have a Standard Horizon HX870 handheld.

I think Touche' has a Standard Horizon Matrix GX2000 right now. So far
I've resisted the urge to upgrade to the GX2400 because Touche' is still a
NMEA 0183 boat.

I do see an advantage to a VHF that has GPS built in. If your primary GPS
dies, you can still send a DSC distress call with location.

Used VHF's sell readily on eBay. I've sold several. Years ago, one of my
clients wanted to upgrade to a VHF with a RAM. I did so, giving him a
credit for his old VHF. I sold the old, still very nice, VHF to another
client, got paid for the install. I sold the VHF from the second client on
eBay. I made money 3 times and each client got upgraded. Win, win, win,
win!

As for brand preference, I tend to favor Standard Horizon but really don't
have any significant reason for that. I think ICOM is also a very reliable
brand. I had an ICOM handheld for years and it worked fine. It, too, got
sold on eBay.

I could never go back to not having A RAM mic in the cockpit, a handheld is a

Having said that, that is exactly the situation I find myself in now, and
just the thought of running the cable up to the cabin has me procrastinating.

Like Alan sez, there is a very good chance the existing cable will work with
newer mic, or the current cable they sell may work with your older one. There
are several on Ebay.

Also, if you get another, S-H just came out with a new radio, GX2400, which I

I like my ICOM radio with DSC and RAM mic. I think some of the newer ones
have builtin AIS.

When my cable went bad, I called ICOM, and they said they no longer stock
the cable. Then I asked whether a later mic cable would work. It turned out
that it did, and I was able to repair the mic with the new cable. Maybe you
can get the same results from Standard Horizon.

Hi Chuck – thanks for your offer.

Is the bulletin in paper format, PDF, Word .doc or something else? How many
pages? If we can get it into a compatible format that the other users can use,
it would be great.

Let me know and maybe I can convert it.

Hi Stu,

I’ve obtained a copy of the Edson engine control engineering bulletin for the
pedestal mounted unit that appears on many of our 78-83 vintage C&C’s. The
bulletin no longer appears on Edson’s website, but from a service standpoint,
it may be useful for list members and visitors looking to service the engine
controls on the boats. Unfortunately, Edson no longer offers replacement parts
for this controller, but it does have good info on assembly and disassembly
for those wishing to replace cables, etc.

I don’t have a file share program otherwise I would post a link to the list,
but if I could send it to you for the website for general consumption, that
would perhaps be better. Let me know how to get it into your hands.

Hi,

I had a similar shift lever breakage on my on C&C 29-1. It was the old style
shifters with cable going through separate tubes. I made my own replacement
from aluminum stock. It was real simple to do. I used a jig saw with a metal
cutting blade to ruff cut out the lever and sanded it on a belt sander.
Aluminum sands well almost like a hard wood. After drilling the 2 holes, It
came out real nice looking.

Re: Stus-List Shift lever

2020-07-06 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
You will be very disappointed if you order this part for your engine control as
it only works in an Edson 870 control. Replacement engine control levers for
the controls where the cables have their own unique tubes aft of the pedestal
ARE NO LONGER MADE BY EDSON and have not been for over 25 years. If you still
have one of these controls on your boat, do yourself a favor and replace your
control cables(carefully). The vast majority of control component breakage
(clevis, levers, and clamps)is caused by trying to overcome the friction of
worn out cables that have been in the boat for over 30 years. And no, there is
no way to lubricate a Morse series 33 or 64 cable. It is the cable housing
that wears out wherever there is a bend in the cable.

The levers you describe are no longer made by Edson. It’s conceivable that you
could 3D print a new one from the existing pieces but chances are good you will
need to swap out engine controls to either an Edson 870 or 816 control housing.
Your cables would get re routed inside the pedestal and you would lose the

I believe the control on the boat is currently a model 737 control.

Our C&C 35-3 came with plastic control levers.  They always felt close
to failing so we replaced them with Stainless Steel Edson levers from
Defender.  Expensive but well worth it.  It is a terrible feeling when
the lever breaks at the worst time.  We had the side mounted
shift/throttle control break the mounting screws approaching a bridge
with the current pushing us toward it on our Redwing 35.  Dove below and
had to manually shift the A4 to keep us stationary while the bridge
opened.  Also had a friend who liked to come into his slip fast and
quick reverse to stop until his shifter broke off in his hand.  I jumped
off the boat and managed to get it stoppped before he Forest Gump'd the
dock.

I have a 35 MK I. Do you literally mean a boom tent with the boom as a
high point and the edges tied down to the rails? If you mean something
like a big sun/rain shield spread out with poles, I have one in my shed.
It was not custom made for the boat, I think my father got it in the
1970s and it is a big rectangle of cloth with two aluminum poles. One
pole is split and the cover has a velcro slot so it can extent aft past
the topping lift/halyard on the end of the boom.We actually don't use it
very often since we got the Bimini. On the plus side it provides a lot
of shade. On the minus side it takes some time to put up and I would
NEVER leave it up at anchor with the boat unattended unless there was
exactly 0% of storms. It is a lot of windage and tends to yank boat boat
at an angle on the anchor and pop it free assuming it even lasts long
enough to do that before shredding.

You can see it here

Stus-List Shift lever

2020-07-06 Thread John and Maryann Read via CnC-List
A friend’s circa 1980 36 shift lever broke while docking this weekend. It was
an exciting docking maneuver with crew climbing into the engine to manually
shift but all is well. Any advice on obtaining a replacement?

Edson system with separate throttle and shift levers each in its own tube
either side of the pedestal. Lever is cast aluminum

TIA
