Stus-List Re: Mega Hin

2020-10-01 Thread CHARLES SCHEAFFER
Hi Ken,
OK, so correct me if I'm wrong, after reading your attachment explaining a 12
character HIN in this time period, the first "M" stands for Mega, "0020" means
hull number 20, and the second "M" means model year to follow, "78" was the
model year and "I" in this method means, April.

What year was she built?

Thanks,
Chuck

The " M " is a fixed character indicating " Model Year Format " and never

This is a HIN VERSION B. " Model Year Format ". 12 characters, in use from

Hey Jon,
M for May or March? A for August or April. I think HIN was explained
correctly already.

BTW, my boat has a D in the HIN. The builder file shows it was started April
7th, the fourth month and delivered in June. I have hull #2 and by December,
they were up to hull #21.

Stus-List Re: Propane Stove - Not Staying Lit

2020-10-01 Thread Josh Muckley
To Tom's question "did you hold the knob in?" the reason why you need to
hold the knob in is to allow the thermocouple time to heat up in the heat
of the lit burner. Once hot, it stays open and keeps the flame.

As a point of clarity I called it a thermocouple which uses a peltier
junction to generate a voltage to hold the valve open. But there is a more
primitive means of accomplishing the same effect and that is with a
bi-metal valve or temperature sensitive bulb and valve. I'm not sure which
technology you'll find but hopefully you have a better idea where to look
for solutions.

Stus-List Propane Stove not staying lit

2020-10-01 Thread Len Mitchell
Edd,
What Josh said but try cleaning them first with a small brush. Something like
an old tooth brush. The orifice is under the burner cap and should be clean and
grease free too. They need direct flame contact and no carbon. They generate
millivolts to prove there is a flame. You can get a millivolt tester but they
are hardish to find and easier to just replace the flame sensor. It’s really
unlikely two will go bad at the same time so maybe check the electrical
connection to the valve too if cleaning them doesn’t work. If the air mix isn’t
correct or the opening is dirty you will get carbon deposits so the flame
should be blue not orange once the burner is hot.

Hi Rob,
So the Mega was conceived by Peter Barrett, representing North Sails and then
designed by Rob Ball's team?

I look forward to reading your article on lifting keel boats.

The S2 7.9s were very popular. I think the smaller 6.9 would make a nice
trailerable boat for my future purposes.

Thermocouple is bad. It is the safety device which ensures that the
propane is shutoff if the flame goes out. When hot it opens, cold closed.

Listers,

Two of the burners on my three-burner stove do not stay lit. They will flame
up, but when I let go of the dial, they die out. One is working perfectly.

Any suggestions on a fix?

2020-10-01 Thread Robert Mazza
Chuck,

The design of the Mega 30 is erroneously ascribed to Peter Barrett on
Sailboatdata.com. I'm sure Rob Ball will also chime in here to defend his
design. Peter Barrett, representing North Sails, worked closely with George
Cuthbertson in the creation of the Mega concept, but the execution of the
design, for good or evil, was entirely C Design Group. I should know
because I was the Project Manager for this design. ;-)

Incidentally, the prototype of the Mega was built in aluminium by Martin
and Danny Klacko at Klacko Marine.

On a related note, I included the Mega 30 in a recent Design Comparison
piece on lift keel trailerable boats that will appear in the next issue of
Good Old Boat magazine. .

Stus-List Re: Meet & Greet Rendezvous

2020-10-01 Thread Robert Mazza
Hi JohnKelly,

I'm sure others will respond to this as well, since it is easily available
online. The Hull Identification Number is as follows:

*Manufacturer's Identification Code**Manufacturer's Serial Number**Commencement
of Construction**Model Year*
*ABC* *2AB41* *G0* *91*

*1.2.2.4.4 Table 1-1 is a typical example of a complete
twelve-digit HIN for a vessel where fabrication commenced in July 1990 for
the 1991 model year.*

Therefore ZCCM0020M781 would indicate this was hull #20. However, in the
regulations for the HIN, there is no month designated as "M". December is
the last month and is designated as "L". The "7" would indicate that it was
built in 1977, which would befit hull #20. The last two digits are supposed
to be the Model Year, so 81 would not make sense for a hull #20 built in
1977. Curious.

Hey Stu,

Thanks for putting that together. It was great to match faces to names from
the list. JohnKelly had some great stories to share. I also enjoyed the glam
photos shared by the various members. I look forward to the next one.

Mega: I always found the Mega interesting for the lifting keel idea, as it is
a boat you can trailer home for the winter and trailer to exotic sailing
venues. The keel idea showed up much later in trailerable sport boats like the
Ultimate 20 and Antrium 27 and later the Melges and Viper 640 boats. The Mega
was such a departure from the C racer/cruiser style boats, I always wondered
if the Mega was designed by a different team of designers than Rob Ball and his
team.
