I agree with all of Dwight's comments except one; they're not monohull
sailboats...they are hydrofoils, and as such, I don't consider them as the
sailboats I prefer for the America's cup racing;

Have you ever been on a 75 foot monohull sail boat going 40 kts. I say its top
notch technology and takes a whole lot more than most sailors know how to do
imagine Barker, Ainslie, Spitall and Burling steering these foiling monohulls
they are currently the best sailors on the planet and the crew are also the
best that can be had. I like the racing and i like seeing all the adjustments
these guys have to make above and below the water. Different point of view I

Stus-List Re: Americas Cup racing

2020-12-21 Thread CHARLES SCHEAFFER via CnC-List
Hi Dwight,
I like seeing the technology too. These first races were just sea trials. The
upcoming races will be better sailed and commentated and the graphics will make
them easier to understand too. I Look forward to learning about the crew
positions and their responsibilities. The wheel looks pretty complicated with
Nintendo game controller.

Ken Read was noting how the crews changed the sail camber during maneuvers.
Deep draft form power to get up on the foil and then a flatter camber for low
drag speed sailing.

I think the keels will eventually evolve into a single centerline canting Tee
foil that will work on any tack or gybe. Or the sails will spill the wind
after foiling and eliminate sideways forces.

Enjoyed a short but nice sail today. Wanted to take a long deliberate look

Nothing matters except staying on the foils going fast.  The boats are going 35
knots in 15 knots of wind so it all looks the same, upwind and downwind.   No
spinnakers, no crew running around the deck hoisiting and lowering sails, or
tacking.  Everyone stays in the same place throughout the race.  There is
absolutely nothing happening except the boat going through the water and
nothing that a normal sailor can related to.  It is impossible to tell why one
boat is ahead and another behind and why they change places at times.  Even the
graphics for who is ahead are really hard to decipher.  I also found the
commentary to be unhelpful.  I don’t think the people calling the race have any
