Stus-List Re: Rigging replacement

2021-03-12 Thread David Jacobs via CnC-List
I had the rod rigging replaced on my 35 Mark 3 which I’ve since sold and
replaced with a Quest 33. I was racing the boat, didn’t want to take a change
on losing the rig which was at the time was 30 years old. The cost to replace
it was $8K.

I have a 35 lb Mantus that was used for one week on a cruise (it worked great

like to pick it up in Bristol, RI you can have it for 75% of whatever you were

Re: Stus-List CC drawings from Maritime Museum of the Great Lakes

Rob,

If you’re writing an article about on the evolution of keels in sailing yachts,
if you haven’t you should visit the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol, RI. They have
a temperature and humidity controlled room with all of the Herroshoff half hull
models that were carved by hand by captain Natt himself. They also have the
tools he used and a lot of boats in various stages of refurbishment.

Martin,

Yes, the CC drawings at the Marine Museum are a tremendous resource. However,
I had forgotten that the 43 keel was a combination of iron and lead castings.
I'm in the process of doing a series of articles for Good Old Boat on the
evolution of the keel in sailing yachts, and the 43 would be an excellent
example of this transitional stage to an all lead casting. Is there any chance
you could send me a copy of that keel drawing, otherwise I too would get a
copy from the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston. I'll be up there
on the 19th for a Board meeting.

I received our CC 43-1 digital drawings this week and had a chance to give
them a good look over. We purchase a little over 20 drawings, both the digital
and printed copies. The printed full size copies are should be delivered in a
week or so.

The purchase was worth every penny. On the keel drawings are hand written
notes listing the actual weights of the first 3 castings of both the iron and
lead parts. Also, the keel drawing shows all the bolt locations including some
between the lead and iron parts that I had not found (they are buried inside
the keel assembly).

Calypso’s mast and fittings are all custom (the fittings are overbuilt,
fabricated SS). The drawing package included dimensioned drawings for most of
the fittings and the spreaders. If the mast ever get damaged we now have an
excellent starting point for the repair. We also got the original chain plate
drawings. I found some additional drawing numbers relating to the spars and
have requested them from the museum.

As Calypso is hull #1 of the custom 43 series many of the hull build drawings
have additional notes regarding fiberglass lay-up details that I was not aware
of including extra lay-up in high stress areas and where the balsa starts and
ends. Along with the “as built” type drawings are the early 1970 conceptual
deck and interior drawings used to sell the project to the first buyer. It is
interesting to see how the design changed from the early marketing to actual
build.

The rudder drawings include the first rudder and rudder bearing assemblies
which show the rudder’s stock details and the massive bronze casting that makes
up the lower rudder bearing assembly. I also have the drawing of Calypso’s 2nd
rudder which is deeper with additional inner SS structure.

The icing on the cake for me is the drawings that show the transom
modifications performed in late 1973. It is a relief to know that the original
CC design team engineered the change including how much additional lay-up was
needed to maintain structural integrity. This drawing will be very useful if
we decide to restore the original transom shape.

Stus-List 3GM Transmission

2015-02-02 Thread David Jacobs via CnC-List

My 1984, 35 MKIII has its original Yanmar 3GM and a 1984 Martec folding
prop. I was experiencing really bad vibration at the end of the season as
if the prop wasn't opening or as if only 1 of the 2 blades was unfolding.
I'd put it in reverse (during which there was never any of the vibration)
then put it into forward quickly and hard and after several attempts it
would usually be OK until I slowed down like when approaching the mooring
and then it would happen again.

I sent the prop back to Martec to get it refurbished and when speaking to
them they suggested that although the prop was in need of refurbishment that
the vibration I was experiencing might be due to the engine clutch slipping.
When I asked a Yanmar repair guy about that he said that might indeed be the
issue. Apparently the only way I'm going to be able to tell if the
refurbished prop was the cause is when its back on the shaft and the boat's
back in the water. Since I really don't want to miss any of the short
season, racing beginning just a few weeks after the boat's back in the water
and the cost and hassle of pulling the boat out again after it's launched in
the spring, I'm leaning towards taking prevent yanking the transmission out,
bringing it to a shop and having it rebuilt.

Have any of you had this experience? Has having the prop fixed/replaced
always solved the issue? Or, is there a good possibility that it is indeed
the transmission? Any experience and/or advice the group can provide would
be greatly appreciated.

Re: Stus-List Folding prop

2014-11-27 Thread David Jacobs via CnC-List
I have the same issue with a Martec (not geared) and am sending it back to
them for refurbishment which they recommend every 5 years. They drill out
the holes that the dowels go through and install the next size diameter
pins. I suspect that flexofold has a similar procedure.

All summer I was opening it in reverse and then throwing it into forward.
Not good at all for the transmission and if the rework doesn't work I'll
bite the bullet and get a new (I thought geared) prop.

decided to remove the blades to clean the pins, etc... and put a fair amount
of grease and remount, it's smooth as new. I did greased the gears as i
could every launch but you can't grease the pins without disasembling and
they get pretty dry adding friction, maybe whorst in salt water. you may
alos have something stuck on the bumber like a barnacle or other crap
preventing the blade to open fully.

That was going to be my suggestion. I would just add, give it some throttle
in reverse and then you have to pop in forward. It is very hard on the dive
train but, it may be what's necessary for that prop. That was how I had to
open the prop on Lolita. I eventually went with a 3 blade fixed prop.

I have a folding prop Prop (Flexofold 2 blade 16 R).
That does not open up all the way when the boat is moving, when this happens

This problem does not happen when I leave the dock and start from a standing

I wonder if anyone else has experienced a similar problem and found a

Re: Stus-List survey now brokers

2014-10-28 Thread David Jacobs via CnC-List
I was very hesitant to pay someone to help me purchase a boat but I ended up
using a broker, Bill Shaw in Barrington, RI when I purchased Saltaire.

Bill did a great job. He suggested that I reduce my offer to what was even
further lower than market value and saved me several thousand dollars. He
also connected me to people who did some necessary work on the boat for what
turned out to be extremely competitive prices.

Actually, Bill and I have become good friends and often sail/race together.
Given my experience I'd certainly suggest entertaining the idea of using a

I am not sure if everybody realizes but a common practice is to find your
own buyers broker to represent your interest. I did that when we purchased
Persistence because I knew and trusted him and he is right next door. My
broker contacted the listing broker and between them took care of many
details that it would be difficult for me to do since the boat was nearly
1000km from here by road. Financially the listing broker and buyers broker
split the commission down the middle.

I really liked this arrangement because it really helped my own interests
and in a situation such as Jon mentioned would probably have helped him as
well.

This arrangement was great for me

Not sure I agree with you there Mike, I think it depends on the
surveyor...around here if TBoats (Iain Tulloch) is your surveyor I think he
does the same detailed inspection every time...I have had him survey Alianna
twice, 5 years apart for insurance purposes and each time I was there and
saw him go over the boat with a fine tooth comb...he checks everything,
including rig, deck, hull and rudder moisture content, hull valves,
electrical wiring, fuel lines, etc. and he includes lots of photos in the
report...my insuance company, Royal Sun Alliance, likes his work but I
believe the brokers don't share that feeling because he often finds too many
problems, some of which might discourage a buyer

Jon

Was the survey done for you? Did you pay for it?

There are two types of surveys. There is a pre-purchase survey commissioned
and paid for by the potential buyer and there is an insurance survey
commissioned and paid for by the existing owner for insurance purposes. The
buyers survey is usually more detailed and is there to point out the
potential issues as well as strengths of the boat. An insurance survey does
not always record everything to the same level of detail and is designed to
put a valuation on the boat for insurance purposes. I have had both done.
I like my insurance company to have a very high opinion of my boat. However
when buying I like to know potential expenses I will incur in order to
determine a fair price

So back to the original question. Who paid for the survey?

use less. Never short for opinions I'm hoping you folks can provide me some

2014-10-12 Thread David Jacobs via CnC-List
David,

I purchases a 1984 CC 35 MK3 last fall and had the rod all replaced. The cost
was $8K. However, the boat had been stored in doors every winter since it was
built and except for the rudder was totally dry. It was on the market for $38K
and I eventually purchased it for $24. Add the rigging ($8K) main ($2,500) and
135 ($2800) and I’m into it for $37.3K. which for this particular boat I’m
fine with.

This winter soda blasting and barrier coating the bottom. Hopefully going for
3rd and 4th to 1st and 2nd on Wednesday nights.

Stus-List In-Hull Depth Transducer

2014-09-14 Thread David Jacobs via CnC-List
I am purchasing a Lowrance chart plotter and depth sounder and like several
others would really like to avoid another hole in the bottom. In-hull
transducers will not work through a cored hull which my 35Mk3 has. Is there
solid hull at or near the boats centerline? Is anyone using an in-hull
transducer in their core hulled CC?

By the way, I would prefer Raymarine but the nearly $400 price difference
(all through Defender) is significant. If anyone thinks the Raymarine is
worth the extra money or has any comments about this choice please let me

Stus-List Play in the steering

2014-07-14 Thread David Jacobs via CnC-List
After picking up our mooring and locking the wheel I felt something
banging. I quickly found that the source was the rudder moving side to
side as the boat swung on the mooring. I went down below and found that the
steering cables were fairly slack and there was quite a bit of play, hence
the back and forth movement. The top of the emergency tiller post was also
moving not symmetrically within it's fitting as though the bearings around
the rudder post weren't tight (something to do in the fall) It seems like
there should be a pulley attached to a spring (an idler) to provide a
calibrated pull on the cables and take up the slack. If that is not the
answer then how tight should the cables be? I haven't dived into it yet but
when I do is there an obvious way to shorten the steering cables?

My method to get in there is to close the port cockpit drain seacock, pull the

tighten the turnbuckles that are used to adjust the cable tension until you
have the amount of play with which you are comfortable. You can reach the
turnbuckles through the port cockpit locker, and possibly through the access
panel in the back of the quarter berth. Now would be a good time to check the
cables to make sure they are not frayed. Take a piece of facial tissue
(Kleenex) and hold it loosely around the cable, while someone moves the wheel
through it's full rotation. If there is any fraying, the tissue will catch it,
and it would be advisable to replace the cable.

Dave,
Had my Martec rebuilt last year before we headed to the Bahamas. Folks at
Martec were easy to deal with. Had/have the only one blade deploying issue
primarily when I failed to stop/slow sufficiently before putting in forward
(ie sailing @ under 3 knots = time for iron genny) Couldn't kick it in gear
w/o slowing more or else one blade deployment would be an issue (easy to do
but hard to remember to do). After rebuild it is MUCH better and is now a
very rare event. Besides the pin redo they rebuild the stops. Not sure what
solves the issue but it is solved.

I have a Martec folding prop which when I come off the mooring operates
fine. However if I slow down or stop to pick up crew at the dock something
happens and it vibrates like crazy. It?s got to be that one of the blades
folded and the other didn?t and when I accelerate it still vibrates as
though the blade that folded does come out again. Both blades do deploy when
I put it in reverse but then one folds when I go into forward. Is this how
these folding blade props act when they have too much play? If anyone has
had that happen and then had it reworked by Martec did this problem go away?

My prop is folding, not feathering. On a non-geared folder If you have the
blades on a vertical plane, the lower blade will hang down from gravity /
add additional drag. On horizontal plane they fold together completely
(Looks like a seaweed) and minimize drag. If it's a geared folder, they
will fold completely no-matter the angle

That's per Martec's instructions. See comment about the Pivot point (Shaft)
being set vertical (Making the blades horizontal)
http://www.martec-props.com/install_eliptec.htm

As for the rebuilds, they are about a hundred bucks with Martec. They
re-drill the hub, install a larger diameter shaft, re-drill the blades,
balance and polish the whole thing. The prop looked brand new.

Call the MFG to get an idea if you are out of specs. My blades wiggled more
than 1 inch at the tips so it was pretty obvious..

Re: Stus-List Rigging Problem

2014-06-27 Thread David Jacobs via CnC-List
Dennis,

In response to your questions,

· The boat is a 6’ keel

· Brand new Thurston (albeit cruising but really nicely shaped) sails
(main and 135%)

· Rake is something I need some education about. The mast was pulled
and I added all new rod rigging and a Harken Furler so the rake is whatever it
was when the boatyard (Burr Brothers in Marion) stepped the mast. So, how do I
measure it and what’s the proper amount of rake?

· Trim was good. Very experience crew who is in the industry and has
been racing since the age of 8 trimming the jib and the main telltales were
streaming well (front of the jib and back of the main trimmed well). 4” off the
lower spreader and just off the top spreader.

· 1500 pounds on the backstay to take the sag out of the head stay
(taken off when off the wind). Slight bend in the mast but I don’t have a
quantitative answer.

· I was totally focused on sailing to the genoa tell tales which we
kept streaming evenly up and down the genoa. However the “grove” between
pinching and too far off the wind seemed very tight (maybe not enough halyard
tension?).

· Wind was 15-18 knots and I was not able to point as high as the
others including the other 35 MK3. Also it appears that the skipper of the
other CC MK3 can sail his boat flatter. Yes, he did have more crew on the rail
but I’ve seen this in other races also when it wasn’t as windy. So, I’m
wondering if this particular design likes to sail slightly pinched.

· Bottom cleaned two days prior to the race and every three weeks.

Any help appreciated. Need to improve or my crew might mutiny L

Deep keel or centerboard?

1. Sails? Old? Bagged out?

2. Rake? Need to hear from other 35-3 owners.

3. Trim? How tight? How far off speaders?

4. Mast bend? How much?

5. Genoa lead? Were the tell tales breaking evenly up and down the genoa?

6. Angle vs course. Was your angle the same as the others or were you pointed
lower. If pointed the same what were the wind conditions? Were you getting
pushed sideways?

Re: Stus-List Planning trip to S. New England- need advice from locals

2014-06-20 Thread David Jacobs via CnC-List
Pete,

About 25 minutes from Providence and on the way to Newport, stop in Bristol,
RI. A fun town that is home to the Bristol Yacht Club, the Herreshoff museum
and a lot of good restaurants. The museum has Bill Koch's 12 meter
American in which he defended the cup and several Herreshoff designed
boats in various stages of rehabbing. One of the boats on display (actually
hanging from the ceiling) is a catamaran they designed and built in the
1890's that after doing horizon jobs when racing some very fast schooners
was outlawed. They are also building a 1/6 scale model of the Reliance which
is pretty interesting.

Subject: Stus-List Planning trip to S. New England- need advice from locals

I'm planning a trip to southern New England next month [not by boat].
Naturally, I'm most interested in the sailing attractions, such as Newport,
Mystic Seaport, and the like.
At this point, I'm thinking of renting a car in Providence and exploring as
many places as I can over a 5-day period.
I'd like to do one of the harbor cruises on a 12 meter as well as enjoy
local cuisine. Beyond these, I don't have much else on my to-do list.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Pete W.

Re: Stus-List Folding prop

2014-05-23 Thread David Jacobs via CnC-List
Andy,

I have a Martec and it’s the first folding prop I’ve ever had. I had been
nervous about it but besides sometimes having one sometimes fold when going
really slow in the harbor and having to hit reverse to spin it open, it’s been
great. In reverse it’s more than adequate stopping the boat pulling into a slip
which is to only time I need it and that’s rare since I’m normally on a mooring.

Gee, Andy,

I'm really surprised nobody replied yet. There's usually a decent discussion
on folders. Most fall into two camps, the Martec detractors and the
Flex-O-Fold supporters. I swing a Martec 2 blade folder on Touche'. As a
racer I like it but many do not because of its perceived lack of reverse power.

Call each supplier and get recommendations and pricing.

Re: Stus-List Cool change and Oregon Offshore Race

Good decision. Perhaps the one thing we do benefit from getting older is wisdom.

I received this email from Frank, this morning:

As you know, we decided not to race in the Oregon offshore.
This decision was made at 0600 Thursday morning. All the crew members were
in agreement not to participate in the race.
We had been monitoring the weather for the past 30 days and watching the
trends for the offshore race course.

We knew that the race was going to be fast but that implied that the course
would be challenging. We were looking at weather predications from NOAA
that included up to 40 knot gusts, 20 to 35 knot sustained winds, five foot
swell at 9 seconds and nine foot wind waves from Grays Harbor to the Strait.

The boat was not the problem, it was the crew that I was concerned about.
We could expect one critical boat part failure, most of us getting sick, and
possibly one or more serious injuries. Only three crew were experienced in
heavy weather sailing offshore. Our average crew members age is close to 60
years old. Two members being over 70 years old and one less than 50 years
old. Three women and 5 men on the crew. A majority of the crew is new to
offshore racing and have never experienced the conditions that were
predicted for the time of the race. Although we all wanted to race, it was
obvious to all of us that if we experienced the conditions that were
predicted we would most likely regret the decision to go.

Making the decision not to race was very hard for me but deciding to go and
being responsible for a crew members injury would be even more difficult to
endure.

For our boat, for our crew, the decision not to race in the predicted race
course conditions was a good one.

The crew delivered the boat back to RCYC. Nice cruise up the Columbia
River. Stopped at Rainer over night. Averaged 6.7 kts through the water
and 4.1 kts over land.

We are already preparing for next year.
