Stus-List Re: Any thoughts (experience) on trailering?
I used to own a 29 mk1 with the shallow draft keel sailed out of Oakville. When I retired I moved my sailing to the North Channel a used Cradle Shop trailer was purchased. The professional modifications did not match the hull as they “forgot” that it was not the regular racing keel, sigh. All was resolved. I trailered the 9 hour drive with a 3500 rated for 10,000 lb. The significant argh was making the application for the Ministry of Transport Wide Load Permit. Our regular legal width limit is just over 8’. The CC29 mk1 is around 10’. Wide load banners and flags were mounted. The tail lights were changed. An rear end extendable and removable light cross bar was built. The corners of the bar had the lights and flags providing clarity about the boat width and length. The widest beam and long points are high up and easy to miss. I pondered the mast carry; low on the trailer or high on the boat. I went with on the boat so that I could have some significant overhang forward and less overhang aft. A key measurement mount was the height above ground. The MOT ensured that the bridges on my route would clear the bridges. A six inch lowering of the mast mount was required, just clearing the coach roof. I almost forgot when fuelling the truck. Some gas stations have low shelter roofs LOL. Stus-List River board reduces outflows on Lake Ontario | Belleville Intelligencer
https://www.intelligencer.ca/news/local-news/river-board-reduces-outflows-on-lake-ontario River board reduces outflows on Lake Ontario Derek Baldwin More from Derek Baldwin Effective midnight Saturday, operators of the Moses-Saunders Dam in Cornwall will reduce Lake Ontario outflows by 20 cubic metres per second contrary to Quinte region lakefront owners’ demand to open floodgates to prevent further shoreline damage. The International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board will tighten sluices ever so slightly to stem outflow from 8,870 cubic metres per second to 8,850 cm/3, confirmed Rob Caldwell, secretary of the river board, Friday in a telephone interview. Caldwell said the “stepdown is in march step with the decline of Lake Ontario levels.” He cited daily statistics made available on the river board’s website showing the Lake Ontario water level has dropped to 75.0 metres above sea level (246.06 ft.) a month after a major Halloween storm dumped massive rainfall over several days that lead to higher water levels on the lake and corresponding higher outflows at the dam. With lowered water levels on the lake in play now, capping outflows are necessary this weekend to slow down fast currents to encourage safer shipping conditions for Great Lakes vessels plying the lake and the river downstream, he said. The new outflows reduction of 20 cm/s is the equivalent of holding back 20,000 one litre bottles of water every single second or 1.72 billion litres in 24 hours. The decision to retain more lake water behind the dam is the second such reduction since a Nov. 20 rally in Quinte West drew hundreds calling for the repeal of Plan 2014 which governs high water marks triggers to release water from the dam downstream. Caldwell said he understands emotions are high but said regulators and operators of the dam are doing their best to balance the safety of citizens who live above and below the dam as well as shipping companies who operate vessels in the St. Lawrence Seaway. Despite the reduction, Caldwell told The Intelligencer water outflows will still remain at 200 cm/s higher than prescribed under Plan 2014 with even more flexibility in months ahead given the IJC’s instruction to deviate from Plan 2014 on Nov. 22. “We’re providing all possible relief to riparians upstream but we have to consider all stakeholders,” Caldwell said. Not only lakefront homeowners on Lake Ontario are suffering from high water levels, he said. Seaway companies, as well as hydro companies, are being effected as it takes ships five extra hours to traverse the St. Lawrence Seaway canal systems and hydro firms are losing hydroelectric generation money from opened spillways. “Nobody wants this high water – it’s not beneficial to anyone,” Caldwell said, adding “we’re riding the limits within the system.” Brighton resident John Martinello was not impressed with word the river board was about to hold back more water when lake levels are so high above seasonal norms. “Despite the facts that Lake Ontario is 1.51 ft (approx 1 ft, 6 inches) above its long-term average level and that Lake Erie (the source of 80 per cent of all water that enters Lake Ontario) is 1.90 ft (approx 1 ft, 11 inches) above its long-term average level, the International Lake Ontario-St Lawrence River Board (ILOSLRB) will — once again — reduce Lake Ontario outflows,” he wrote in an email to media and local politicians Friday. “It seems clear to me that the current Canadian federal government is, at best, [un]interested in the issue of Lake Ontario flooding,” he said. . Hi I am curious about the story behind this C&C. Is this a prototype Mega? Don Voilier de 30 pieds en aluminium avec remorque Aluminum sailboat built by C & C in 1978, was in dry dock at C & C for 10 years, launched in 1988. Retractable keel with chain block ratchet, simple and effective keel lock, Honda engine 4 stroke 20 HP long foot 2009, about 250 hours, dinghy Silver marine 9 feet 2008,1 large battened sail in good condition, 2 genoa, 1 battened jib, 1 asymmetrical spinnaker new with outrigger. Profiled mast 40 feet on candlestick, boom 14 feet, tiller with saffron jack knife, 2 winch on cabin + 2 2-speed winch cockpit, frank paint made in 2016, Jabsco toilet and flexible Vetus tank, drain plug on deck , water intake, sink, cooler compartment, VHF radio, sound system + 2 speakers, depth gauge, lock for speed, to repair, wind vane and VHF antenna at the masthead. the floors are redone and I sell it with new floors not yet installed, can sleep 2 small people in the clamp + 2 front berths and 2 rear berths. rear navigation lights and starboard bow to the balcony. 2 Danforth anchors 25 lbs with 50 feet of chain each, one with 200 feet this cable, the other with 150 feet of cable. electrical panel with circuit breakers, light in the passenger compartment and in the clamp. Cockpit cushions and cushions inside in good condition. 5 life jackets, 1 life saver and life line, 2 ABC fire extinguishers, manual bilge pump. Sailboat fully insulated with urethane. the ceiling finish remains to be done, several defenses. The sailboat is 30 feet over all and has a 7 foot 10 inch master beam, the draft is 6 feet 6 inches. Comes with a double axle trailer, I only use it for the launching and the exit of the water, the trailer has a retractable balm with pin, which facilitates the launching with a pick up 4 x 4 3/4 tons. Weight of the trailer and the sailboat, 5 tons. A survey for insurance is planned next spring, according to the latest survey, the boat is very solid and built with aviation grade high quality aluminum. There is still a bit of arm oil to do but at this price, for an aluminum sailboat is a bargain. We sell it for the purchase of an offshore sailboat in anticipation of trips. Negotiable price. Re: Stus-List Yacht club weather station
Hi Dennis, We are quite interested in exploring station at www.ncyc.ca. The regular weather stations and private Weather Underground stations are physically far away. The North Channel NOAA style Environment Canada Weather Buoy is our current go to for current weather. Our club is remote enough that neither cable, fibre nor digital phone internet are available. We do have a cell internet hub with 50G a month under a special remote and rural internet access program. We are curious how much data is used in a day/week/month connecting the weather information to Weather Underground? Re: Stus-List FW: Electronics - was Re: Setting GPS Waypoints
This is what happens when you reply to spam email By Alex Rosenthal "Hello James Veitch, I have an interesting business proposal I want to share with you, Solomon." James makes the uncommon choice of hitting the "reply" button, and so begins what has to be one of the funniest TED Talks of all time, "This is what happens when you reply to spam email." It's good for a laugh and a quick pick-me-up. But there's also a fascinating subtext: What's going on in this phisher's head? Does he actually think he's going to succeed in conning James? Or at some point does the scammer just decide to play along and participate in an impromptu, improvisational piece of performance art? (I’d also like to know whether this guy is aware that his email exchange is the subject of a TED Talk that’s been watched millions of times.) I love that Veitch's performance is equal parts stand-up comedy, TED Talk and epistolary narrative. But what I love even more is that a profoundly and absurdly human interaction emerges from the most profane of places. It makes me wonder what sort of adventures my spam folder might hold -- and how we might take advantage of spam as an untapped medium of communication. Perhaps future spam will be 25 percent cons, 25 percent unsolicited poems and 50 percent puzzles with cryptic, encoded messages. A boy can dream. Re: Stus-List US to Canada shipping
US shipping to Canada argh expensive learning ... USPS coming to Canada Post is my only acceptable shipper. Divide the shipping items into smaller value packages can sometimes result in coming through with no brokerage or sales taxes. No duty has ever been due. Canada Post brokerage is typically only $5 compared to $25=>$50=>$100 with the big name couriers. There are shipping addresses for couriers in most US border towns. This works but always always always declare... Seizure of your car or boat, let alone the goods and fines are not unrealistic possibilities. A friend had to go to court in the Saulte .. Declaration at the border usually means paying the sales taxes. Did I say 35% to 45% exchange rates depending upon your credit card, Interac , or Paypal piece of the pie . Don From: Alan Bergen via CnC-List To: C&C Photoalbum email list Sent: Thursday, June 12, 2014 7:54:37 PM Subject: Re: Stus-List Backstay Tension Tim: It's important to know the force being applied, not the pressure. Force is equal to pressure multiplied by the area of the hydraulic cylinder, and all cylinders are not the same. There's a Navtec manual on the photoalbum web site. Find out which hydraulic cylinder you have, and look up the cylinder's area in the Navtec manual. The C&C 35 uses #10 rod, with a breaking strength of 10,300 lbs. Recommended preload limit is 25% - 33% of breaking strength, or 2600 - 3,400 lbs. Absolute preload limit is 40% of breaking strength or 4,100 lbs. You can use these numbers to figure out the recommended and maximum pressures based on your cylinder size. You can also order a free, force ring label from Navtec to apply to your hydraulic gauge. Remember to specify cylinder size when ordering the Force ring label. Alan Bergen 35 Mk III Thirsty Rose City YC Portland, OR Hi all 35-3 racers (and others with hydraulics), how much do you tension your backstay to get an acceptably straight forestay in 20-25kts? We were racing in that last night and our forestay was way looser than I wanted with the backstay at 2000psi (2 on the hydraulic panel). I have never gone above this before (1.8 seemed to be plenty for most conditions last year), but wondered what others maxed out at.
