I think Jamie made my replacement North main when he was at North sails
in Toronto.  Needless to say there is a lot of his work here in Niagara
on the Lake SC.  Never heard a complaint and we have his sailpac fitted
and are very happy with it.

YO;

It has been our observation that the Loos gauge readings are relative
and not specific, our gauge will not match yours.  But if you  use my
gauge (or yours) and measure my rig you can use the same gauge to return
to your boat and match settings.   We could be wrong in this.

One of those races where we interchange crew members, Chris Doyle from
Skip Doyle's boat Rocking Chair was delegated to our boat...first thing
he did was to loosen the rig and we did well. Wish we had kept those
settings, I think we sail to tight.

Stus-List Re: Adding a second house battery

2022-07-04 Thread Doug Robinson via CnC-List
On Nemesis we have modern upgrade to the age old Perko switch. We have
the 24 hour circuits wired to the Bilge pump and the Fridge.  The other
two  are the house circuit and a spare (radio power someday perhaps).
The  starting battery is maintained through the now mandatory ELI
breaker which has a bypass breaker to a marine charger just for the
engine bat.  The house bank gets charged through the inverter while at
the dock.  No fried diodes, simple operation, top circuit protection.
When the engine is running everyone gets their share of juice through
the ACR charging relay.

This is the way your RV should have been wired when delivered Well
the Bilge circuit should have been replaced with the Nest maybe.

started and all 3 batts will charge.  I bought a Noco sealed 10 amp
charger for the dock.  I do not have any high use appliances.  I do
have a 1200 watt inverter wired direct to the house bank.   It is
sometimes used for coffee grinder.

If you “separate” the batteries with a 1-2-ALL switch like we have on
our boats, you can control which battery gets used. If you have only
drawn from one battery, your recharge time will be like it is now.

This is how my C&C34 is set up and how it came when I bought it.  I
added charger, with 2 bank capacity.  One side of the charger gets the
two house, and the other side of the charger goes to start.  Works
fine.  But, as noted, charging the house takes a longer.  I have
debated whether to do away with the 2^nd  house battery since the boat
does not consume that much power -- instruments and auto pilot.  All
lights are LED now.  Stereo use is at dock only.

Assuming you simply want to double your storage capacity, put the
batteries side by side, wire positive to positive and
negative to negative.  You now have 12 volts with 2ce the ampacity.
Others may offer some advice on charging...but
I think you should be reasonably ok, except it will take a bunch
longer to charge as you have 2ce the capacity that you

need to fill.

Stus-List Re: Boat trucking recommendations

2021-08-20 Thread Doug Robinson via CnC-List
I would talk this over with Glenn at ATL no matter what.  If she could
wait Glenn could work a back haul at reduced price.  They just moved a
friends boat from Sodus to Buffalo as the truck was coming back from the
west.  If it is a C&C they have already moved it once.  They have ICC
permits for USA.

slightly smaller boat to bring back and both could fit on the trailer.

Talk to Glenn at Andrews, he may be able to help ……

She is an accomplished sailor and she lives on the boat now, has for a
long time, as I said in my last sentence. Living on a boat at a marina
is not as demanding as single-handed sailing. She sailed the boat from
Seattle to the east coast but that was some time ago.

She could save a ton of money sailing north instead of west.

If she really has to be in California, where slips are big $$$ and
hard to find with live-aboard slips being even harder, the money
might work out better to sell the boat and buy one already there.

I really really hate to say this, but if she can’t day-sail her
way to Texas, how long is she going to be able to be on the boat
at all?

It is the owner that is fragile, not the boat. She is in her
mid-70s, with bad bones in her back, and with stainless steel rods
holding things together. The boat is well looked after and just
had a haul out and a minor refit. She has been in Florida too
long, is fed up with it, and would much rather sail it back
through Panama herself but reluctantly admits she is no longer up
to the task. I have suggested it might be cheaper for her to work
her way around to Texas and truck it from there but again she
would need a sailing companion even for that. Money is not
unlimited and she is exploring her options. - A long-time
liveaboard sailor.

If the boat is too fragile to just sail to San Diego, is the
boat worth shipping across the country?

I could probably find a fragile old 35 foot boat for $25K in
California.

Also note the Canadian shipper **might** be able to ship the
boat to Canada and then ship her to San Diego, but you might
have to pay customs both ways ☹

1. On the CNC Photoalbum website there is a link to the C&C27
website. Update that link to the location where the website gets
archived.
2. Create a C&C 27 facebook page. In essence the FB page takes over
for the forum on the 27 Association site. Note there is already a
dedicated 27 Mark V FB page this new one could be one focusing
on Marks I through IV. I've offered to help out as an Admin of a FB
page.
3. BEFORE the 27 Association site is archived, it be edited to
provide notice / links to the FB pages. So ... someone looking for 27
info may find the link to the static archived info and be directed to
the I thru IV and V FB pages.
Stu perhaps right now the links under 'C&C Groups' could be
updated to include the several existing FB pages? ... C&C Sailors,
C&C Sailboat Owners, C&C Sailboat Owners Group, C&C 27 Mark V Owners,
C&C 110 Owners, C&C Mega 30 Owners hmm ... quite a few aren't there!

is that their database is totally different than any of the other 100

Once their computer programs determines some so-called spam coming
from a specific email address, Microsoft blocks ALL emails coming from
that domain addressed to their customers which include MSN, Outlook,

For some unknown reason, Microsoft blocked our list.  We contacted
Microsoft through their web page to have the block removed.  From
reviewing comments from others having the same problem, the request is
automatically rejected – 100% of the cases reported this.  Next you
have to get in line to talk to a real live person who may or may not
speak English (that we can understand) and may not even be in North
America.
They confirm they will look into the matter and the block should be
removed in the next 24-48 hours but there is no guarantee that email

We are at the waiting stage right now and may see some improvements by
the weekend.
If you are one of many that have reverted to other methods to receive
our list emails, and you have a Microsoft email account, it is
possible they have blocked other senders to your address.

At least we are getting somewhere.

Re: Stus-List C&C29 MK1 Mast Step Replacement

2020-08-31 Thread Doug Robinson via CnC-List
Yep, been there, done that and got the T shirt.  First time I noted the
problem was when attending my first Owners meeting Rob Mazza asked the
assembled owners how many had replaced the mast step and six or eight
hands went up.   OMG wots this?   Second time on Saturday Morning before
heading out to the YYC Level regatta we couldn't get the rig to tune.
Damn mast step collapsed so the racing crew hunkered the mast up and we
unscrewed the block and ran off to Scotty our shipwright in the yard and
of course he had a block of oak in inventory for just such an occasion.
He and our ship's carpenter (and mainsail trimmer by avocation) slipped
in the new block and screwed it in place. It was then we observed that
he drilled a limber hole in the block under the mast and swaged in a
stainless drain pipe with the end knurled over to drain the stuff that
comes down the mast.  (Lesson #1).  Whole procedure took 45 minutes and
we converted a DNS to a late start and DNF for the first race.  That was
1990 and we have since replaced it again, this time soaking the block
for months in preservation chemicals.  (Lesson #2)

The real problem comes when the stringers under the block collapse due
to the fact that they are not encased in fiberglass on the bottom.  Then
you have to cut out the cabin sole and re glass in new stringers (and
upgrade the sole to a nicer teak and holley deck).  That project would
be above my paygrade and I would have some of the C&C alumni in the club
tackle that.  I have seen it done once in our yard.  Meantime make damn
sure the bilge stays dry and fit a garboard plug to keep that way while
up on the cradle for the winter.  (Lesson #3)

It's no big deal and we have had discussions about casting an aluminum
pillow block but its just easier and faster to fit a new oak block.

Dear C&C List members,

We suspect this is due to the mast step block having rotten away. But
we won't know for sure until the mast is removed on Saturday.

We're hoping to fix the issue well enough to enjoy the remainder of
the season on Lake Michigan. Does anyone have any advice on the best
way to do this?

Furthermore, if anyone has photos of the process of replacing the mast
step or dimensions for the block of wood etc we'd really appreciate
it. At this point in time, we've never seen the mast step and don't
know precisely what we're going to need to make the repair.

For reference: here's photos of the damage:

Well I may be the oldest on the list (so far) but I have only owned
Nemesis since 1983.  If the Redwing 30 is considered a C&C boat, I would
think Andy Hooker who I have seen on here, might be the longest owner.
If Sharks are C&C boats there may even be others.

Subject: Stus-List 2020 C&C Rendezvous: Cancel due to COVID-19?

Last year, I volunteered to host of the upcoming 2020
Mid-Atlantic C&C Rendezvous in Baltimore MD in
late-September.  We recently returned from the relative
safety of the Bahamas to a raging pandemic in the United
States and it is far from being over, even though Maryland
has done quite well in controlling the virus.  I am in my
seventies and catching COVID-19 could mean much more to me
than simply being sick for several weeks—it could be a death
blow.

Consequently, I am withdrawing as a host for the upcoming
rendezvous and I will not be attending one being held
elsewhere.  I strongly encourage that this year's rendezvous
be cancelled but that is up to everyone else on this list
who lives in the Mid-Atlantic area.  In my opinion, a
weekend get together (even with friendly C&C owners) is
simply not worth the risk of catching COVID-19.

So, I am throwing out the question to other possible
attendees, should this year’s rendezvous be cancelled?  And,
if not, who is willing to host it and where?

One big disadvantage of Beta is that there are not nearly as many
parts distributors—this is more important if you cruise to foreign ports.

We are American expatriates who have sailed our 1981 C&C Landfall
38 to New Zealand a decade ago. It has a Perkins 4-108, which is
on its last legs. It's not particularly reliable and is having
trouble with overheating in the last few years. Also, it's very
heavy and it is way too much power anyway. We're looking to
replace it with a more reliable, modern power plant.

So we have a couple of questions:

What is the correct power? I understand most were sold with
Yanmer 30hp 3HM or 3QM diesels. We like the idea of saving a lot
of weight with a smaller engine than the Perkins, as well as ease
of access, etc. However, we'd consider a 35 or 38 also if 30
horsepower wasn't enough power.

At the same time we'll be replacing the fixed 2 blade prop with a
3 blade feathering or folding prop, so will be looking for
recommendations for that. The current prop is totally wrong. I
think it's 16x14. We never were able to get up to the proper
engine speed with the 4-108. Can you recommend something? What
have people tried?

Interested in hearing others' experiences.

Niagara Falls and the Welland Canal are the two main “exits” from Lake
Erie.  As I understand it, much of the flow going down the Niagara
River is diverted for hydraulic power, and presumably there is more
flow now going over the falls due to the high lake level.  Obviously,
it’s not draining fast enough.  The Welland is used for commercial
freighter traffic and is consequently well-controlled with locks.  It
would likely be too disruptive to try to use the Welland as a drain.
I believe the Erie Canal is largely defunct and was also controlled
with locks.  Even if you could direct water through what’s left of
that system, it would likely be overwhelmed before having much impact
on the lake level.

It seems like too much flow could flood Montreal. Last time I was in

This is maybe a really dumb question – is there a way to drain them?

Does anything control the amount of water that heads out to sea down
the St. Lawrence Seaway, Erie Canal, and so on?

FYI:  ATL (Andrews Truck Lines, Virgil Ontario).  Owners returning from
the south do unstep the mast at Troy, restep them at Oswego and sail
Ontario to the Welland.  Some continue on the raging Erie if under 12ft
air draft on the way west to bypass the Welland.

I lived in Montreal for a while and made the trip from there to the
Thousand Islands four times in a Tanzer 26 with a 9.9hp strapped to
the transom.  The current is very strong in several places, up to 4 -
4.5 knots.  A times I thought I was go I get backwards😜.  I also went
out the St. Lawrence in 2014 on my way to the Bahamas. It’s easy to do
10 knots maybe more.  Did 13.1 motor sailing with the current around
Tadoussac.

I just replaced the old switches with a new BlueSea's panel and their

Shawn,

This arrangement allows the use of a starting type battery, which can
deliver high current loads for short time but is not intended be
drained significantly, on the starting bank,  and deep-cycle type
which are intended to drain down to much lower level over a longer
time, on the house bank.  It would depend your use and on how often
you recharge whether this is important or not, to be sure.  And there
are now dual purpose batteries, so it may be less of an issue if you
use them.

One other reason for this system is that it prevents the starting
voltage dip from shutting off your electronics on the house circuit,
one of the main reasons I chose this.

house or start bus, and a switch between the buses? Something to
consider depending on how far I get carried away with my electrical.
Currently I have 2 banks, with room for a 3rd, and just leave them
combined all the time, as they are all 6V GC batteries. If I'm
concerned, I could isolate one bank in case the sun stays away for
too long (and we're not motoring at all), but so far that hasn't
happened. And so far, the only significant load we have is the
fridge, with minimal electronics. Once we add radar, that will change...

I emailed Blue Sea and await their response.

Four years ago I replaced the original old Perko switch when
I did a battery upgrade/rewire/shunt+monitor.  Now I’m
worried about simply replacing with the same one if it’s
prone to failure.

Luckily this happened at the dock but it could have been
really bad if I’d needed power in a hurry.

I’m now thinking I’ll wire up a “backup” bypass directly to
the starter in case this happens again or for jump starting,
etc.

Any thoughts on this from the collective wisdoms of this list?

Re: Stus-List Folding & Feathering Prop Recommendations

2019-09-25 Thread Doug Robinson via CnC-List

Yo "J Prop'rs"

We are currently running the two blade plastic prop on our CnC 29 as the
JProp is on the bench for disassembly and cleaning.  You must use the
requisite grease in the JProp or it gets all gummed up and won't feather
easily.  It also on occasion reverses settings and forward becomes
reverse and visa versaI don't know why but our rigger fixes it.  It
replaced the Martec which is supposed to be  welded and refaced on
occasion, which no one informed us and as a result our welder suggested
we retire it and use it for a trophy of some kind.  We bought the J Prop
as it was the only device that fits the C&C 29MkI and performance in
reverse was considerably improved, our prop is offset.  Ken, notes that
is adjustable and we carefully monitored what other 29 owners were
trying, those that had Atomic 4's and followed their lead, saving
considerable time and effort.  We all ended up using the offset of 5 for
the Atom4.  We should note that distribution of this product has fallen
to US Beta Marine distributor with the unfortunate demise of the dealer
in Quebec, (it's an Italian product).  We are keen to get it back in
operation as the plastic prop is designed for and is outstanding on the
A4, but the Cornell engineer that design it has passed away and nobody
was smart enough to pick it up and continue sales.  Hit something and
you can't replace it.

The grease for the JProp is made in Canada by Shell for the maritime
fisheries trade.  Unique
