Hi Rob,
Truly a critical period in the history of the museum...wish i could write a

Re: Stus-List Barient Winch Spares

2015-02-21 Thread Harry Hallgring via CnC-List
I needed a line stripper for a Barient 24ST...looked all over the world for a
year. I broke down and called Allen Hutton in AUS. They have just about any
spare Barient part you could imagine...except a line stripper for a 24 ST!
So...he made one...perfect replacement, very pleasant to work with.
As for self tailers, look at Winchmate. When it makes it to the top of my
priority list, I'm buying a pair for my 32 primaries.

Atlantic Plywood, Rumford, RI

I have three sheets of 3/4" on back order for the same project on MIRAGE. I am
hearing anywhere from 10 days to over a month. All distributors are having trouble
getting it. There is also the composite laminate option...which I don't like,
but...a whole lot more affordable and available. We have a Farr 395 here doing
composite if you want a few photos.

Specialty Hardwood who have 1/4 and 1/2 inch in stock and are out of stock on
3/4 and Halifax Specialty Hardwoods who only stock 1/4 and 1/2 inch.

This leaves me to try one of three options:

1- Source out of town 3/4 T&H and pay for the shipping of a 78 lb piece of 4x8
plywood.

2- Use 1/2 inch in place of 3/4

3- Laminate 1/4 inch on top of 1/2 inch marine plywood.

And the always available 4th option. Procrastinate and do this next year

Does anyone have any thoughts on this or know of other suppliers near Halifax?

Dave,
I had the rig out this winter as I do at least every third year for a full
inspection. I replaced all lighting and wiring and dye tested the rod and
fittings. due to not winning the lottery this past year the spars did not get
Awlgripped! But, a little Scotchbrite, masking and a quart of white Rustoleum
did the trick until next time! Looks good from 20 feet:)

Jim,
I took the entire cover off by removing the three bolts. Are you saying their
is more to breakdownthe solar panel is removable from the rest of this
subassembly? I didn't want to go too far since it is going back...I have an

Subject: Stus-List Selden sprit kit install

Installed a Selden sprit kit on a Peterson 37 today. Interesting piece of
equipment. Simple design but effective.

Essentially a big ring that mounts on the bow, a sprit pole that slides in/out
through the ring and a couple folding padeyes that the rear fiiting clips onto
in the retracted or extended position. The tack line passes through the pole
exiting through each of the end fittings. The base of the ring is offset so
you can mount the ring closer to center line while the pole extends to one side
of the forestay. We had to make a StarBoard base to lift the ring a bit so the
sprit pole would clear a tack fitting. Simple install. took about 3 hours.

Couple things to watch out for. First, the kits are offered in several
diameters. As one might expect, the larger diameter kits have longer allowed
extension beyond the ring for bigger boats. Be sure to order one large enough
to get the extension you need. Second, check with your local handicap
organization about penalties and exactly how and where to measure the extended
dimension. Third, if your headsail is a deck sweeper and is tacked low to the
deck and the foot is low to the deck, you may have to have the tack cut a bit
to go over the sprit (about 4 inches off the deck on one side of the forestay).

The kit comes with 2 folding padeyes. However, you can install more at
different distances to allow the sprit to extend different distances from the
bow or measure point.

The sprit can be easily removed and stowed below. This is good for boats with
an anchor locker since the lid to the locker would be pinned under the sprit.

Installation was straightforward once you figure out the different measurements.

We installed this one so it retracted clear of the head sail tack point. That
way, the head sail tack snap shackle didn't rub on the sprit when going upwind.

I have one picture of the finished install if anyone is interested.

Jonathan,

Yes, NEB is fortunate to build and service vessels for the "major money clients", but I can assure you for every Rambler there are a thousand smaller boats just like ours that come through here for service or storage. One of the upsides to the yard is that we allow customers/owners/captains/crew/sub-contractors to work on their boats. And as Andy said, it is fun to rub elbows with the big guys:)

Martin,

Andy Burton tells me it is not the boat here in the yard, but another yard on
the other side of the island. Funny coincidence, there is a 40 here that has
the side portlights taped over, just like the CL ad mentions! I intended to
go by the boat after work...but now it's raining. I will swing by tomorrow and
see if I can get a few good photos for you.

Andy,

I saw both 40s today, the white one at NEB and the blue one at Pirate's Cove
that is for sale. Both need work. The blue one has older paint with a lot of
print through and chafes. The bottom looked nice, newly barrier coated.

I took a few pics (only from the ground). Go to Flickr.com and search for
