Stus-List washdown pumps: Jonson Aqua Jet 5.2 or Jabsco HotShot 5

2019-02-01 Thread Paul E via CnC-List
I already have Jabsco pumps for fresh water and macerator systems, so I was
initially leaning towards getting a Jabsco HotShot 5 (5gph/70psi). I have come
across the Johnson Aqua Jet 5.2 (5.2gph/70psi). Both are 5 chamber pumps, and
both come with a raw water strainer. I have read that both run quieter than
previous generations too. The big difference is cost. I can get the Aqua Jet
5.2 for $116 whereas the best price for the HotShot 5 I found was $148.

Does anyone have any experience with the Aqua Jet 5.2 and are there any
concerns with them?

Stus-List engine oil filters and Car talk

2018-11-03 Thread Paul E via CnC-List
Hi,

Some time ago I went from faithfully using Yanmar engine oil filters to the
equivalent Fram filters. The main reason was convince, these were available in
stock at a local(Tallahassee) auto parts store and at the local Tractor Supply
store. Well, now these filters are now no longer locally in stock. They are
still available, but need to be special ordered.

I started looking at common online sources, and found some reasonably prices,
but it only made sense to order in quantities to defray shipping costs. And
while filters were available on Amazon Prime (i.e. free 2nd day shipping), the
prime price was always inflated. I was listening to a NPR rerun of Car Talk
(or “Ka Tark” as I learned growing up south of Boston ) when I was searching
for filters. I’m not sure which, either Click or Clack mentioned their
“buddies at RockAuto.com ” as a source for auto parts.
So I checked them out. They sell filters by the case of 6, and at a great
price. A case of six Premium Guard(Fram equivs) for the Yanmar 3QM30 was
$8.10. That is $1.35 each(i.e., the price your mechanic buys filters). A
case delivered was $15.09 ($8.10+$6.99)[shipping for 2 case was $1 more]. So I
ordered a case.

I have one of these filters on the engine now, and I plan to replace mid-cycle
and dissect, not because I’m concerned but curious, and the fact that I have a
bunch of filters(you can only keep so many aboard).

Re: Stus-List got my shirt Landfall 38

Based on many of the positive comments regarding the shirts from Maritime
T-Shirt, I asked for a Landfall 38 version. They now have the Landfall 38
version available online. I had the text “Landfall 38” added to the shirt
back and had “S/V Johanna Rose” added to front under the C&C logo.

You can see the mockup of the shirt at the link below.

Definitely consider having it locally manufactured as a more affordable
option. I was fortunate, the previous owner manufacture a stainless triple bow
roller with two line chocks built into the design.

Re: Stus-List Omni WiFi antenna installation / connection range

2018-02-26 Thread Paul E via CnC-List
Hi,

About 3 yrs ago I installed a WiFi system with the Ubiquiti BULLET-M2-HP WiFi
radio mounted on top of the mast. These units are built for outdoor use and
require no addition weather proofing. My system has survived several tropical
storms and a hurricane, and still works flawlessly. I use it while cruising,
and while most WiFi’s are secure now a days, getting access has been a minor
issue. You will be surprised how many restaurants use their phone number for
passwords. Visiting an establishment is another easy way to obtain a WiFi
password. I once connect to wifi while anchored in an island cove several
miles off shore from the source which was a RV park on shore.

That said, +90% of my use is at docks. I have been to many marinas and clubs
where the provided WiFi signal is too weak for reliable device use. At our
club, my phone and laptop don’t even see the club’s network. But the bullet
connects with no issue.

I built my system for about $100. Most of the work is plug and play except for
the initial configuration. I have posted the details of my installation,
including the configuration, on my blog.

Re: Stus-List Kidde Fire Extinguisher Recall

2018-02-03 Thread Paul E via CnC-List
Thanks Brian,

I was aware of the Kiddie recall, but failed to add a checking of the
extinguishers to my to-do list.

I just checked the two extinguishers on my boat, and both are affected by
recall. Kidde is sending out replacements.

I believe I purchased these originally at either Walmart or Home Depot. They
are the standard white mariner extinguisher
which are also available at West Marine.

To those who have not yet checked their units, it is simple to check via the
web link given below. Nothing to mail in
or send, it is all do online and takes only a minute or two to complete.

Re: Stus-List A leak in the water system

2017-03-07 Thread Paul E via CnC-List
Hi,

I tried a few methods to repair water tanks, which failed miserably, before
trying hot air welding. Plastic welding is best. I have repaired the 2 tanks
one of which had a creak over 2 ft long(water would gush out as soon as it was
put in). It has been nearly two years since the weld repair, and I have had no
issues. This includes a few 200 NM trips offshore beating into 6-8ft seas.

I was able to borrow a hot air welder and purchased package of 1/8" LDPE
welding rods from Grainger Supply.

Here is a write up of my tank repair work a while back at:

Re: Stus-List Raymarine new plotters and software (No SeaTalkng??)

2017-02-17 Thread Paul E via CnC-List
Fred,

It looks like these new Raymarine chart plotters do not have a SeaTalkng
connector. They do have a deviceNet NMEA2k connection. Is Raymarine moving
away from their version of N2K?

Raymarine has announced some new plotter hardware with faster processors, and
upcoming software updates for existing plotters:

Re: Stus-List Cleat covers

These look like the armpit pads for crutches. You can get them for cheap on
Amazon in all types and sizes.
