For us along the upper Gulf Coast, PHRF TOT is used as the racing standard
but some clubs still offer Portsmouth TOD classes as well.

Re: Stus-List Fuel

2016-02-17 Thread Tracy Hirsh via CnC-List
I also use about 3/4 gph running 5-6 knots at 2000 rpm (or sometimes
slightly less depending on the chop and wind conditions).

I am running the original Universal M35 but, despite high mileage, it has
been maintained well and runs efficiently. I have a 2 blade, feathering Max
Prop.

Just as an aside, if the wind is pretty brisk and you can expect to be
heeling at 20 degrees, and you should expect that if you have sails up and
little crew, You should make sure you have more than 1/4 tank of fuel if
you will be motorsailing (running the engine while sailing). If the fuel
gets too low you run the risk of getting air in your fuel line when heeled
and the engine could be impossible to restart until the system is bled. You
can always remove and filter any fuel left in your tanks before you service
them and re-add the fuel.

Ogopogo has her original Universal 35 engine with a 16" 2 blade Max Prop

usually 6-6.5 knots at 2200 rpm in our typical light chop.

Re: Stus-List Did you see the Dauphin island race disaster?

2015-05-11 Thread Tracy Hirsh via CnC-List
We had our C&C out on the bay for DI Race. We had already finished the race
and were headed back to Fairhope, just south of Middle Bay Light, when the
storm hit. It was a tremendous. It struck quickly and winds were sustained
36-58+ knots for about 30 minutes. Naturally we had all our sails up and
getting them down was a challenge but we did with minimal damage. I felt
very confident that the boat would hold up just fine to the conditions, it
was my crew I was most worried about! All came through just fine.

Here is a video that one of the participants put together if anyone is
interested.

Stus-List Navtec pump service on Upper Gulf Coast

2015-02-04 Thread Tracy Hirsh via CnC-List
Good morning all.

I remember a few months back there was some discussion about getting seals
replaced or other servicing work done on the Navtec hydraulic pump. The
consensus seemed to be that it was much cheaper and faster to get it done
by the local hydraulic shop.

My Navtec pump is leaking a little and my husband removed the unit last
weekend to take it to a local place that we knew had worked on one from
another C&C in the past. The idea was just to have the seals replaced as it
was still working fine, just dripping hydraulic fluid.

Unfortunately, the shop said they couldn't take it apart because they were
afraid to break it? Hmmm?

Does anyone on the Gulf Coast have a place they like? Prefer someplace from
Mobile to New Orleans but I am willing to go Pensacola to Fort Walton as
well. Mailing it off is next option.

I did look on the Lewmar website and that is a real maze! Found this:

Where can I find some one to service my hydraulics or rod rigging? Please
refer back to our agent list and the chart of service provided for the
closest servicing agent.

but not the lists they refer too!

We were hoping to get this little project completed in the next couple
weeks as the next race is Mar 7! We are already missing the February Sunday
club racing and don't want to be out of commission too long!

Thank you for any advice!

Dennis,

We are thinking about going over for the Blue Angels show in November too.
We will likely go over that Friday though and raft up with the Cruising
group from Fairhope Yacht Club. Would love to meet the Admiral and you if
we get the chance. Its great to put a face to the name!

Just in case you are interested, we are participating in the Double-Handed
Race this Saturday, Oct 25, and the goDaddy Bowl Regatta next Saturday, Nov
1. Class winners in the goDaddy historically receive game tickets as well
as t-shirts and trophies. Both races are hosted by Fairhope Yacht Club
and run here in Mobile Bay. We usually have
some transient space on the t-piers and would love to have you come and
visit. Fairhope Visitor's Guide
 The club is within
walking distance of downtown and there is something going on most nights
right at the club.

You may come to visit us and decide to stay and go over to the show with
the group from Fairhope!

Re: Stus-List C&C 37/40 + Pricing

2014-09-26 Thread Tracy Hirsh via CnC-List
We just bought our 1989 C&C 37+ CB this summer from South Florida. She was
in beautiful condition and a thorough survey by a C&C experienced surveyor
found no major issues. Our electronics are fairly new and all systems are
working well. Our sail inventory is good: 2 year old main, older but decent
shape laminate 155, good condition dacron 135, worn out dacron 110,
excellent symmetrical spinnaker, brand new North asymmetrical with ATN sock
and never used ATN storm sail with cuff for furled sail. While the engine
is original Universal M35, it has been well maintained and runs well. The
canvas on the boat included navy sunbrella covers for everything (including
a flat screen TV in salon) and a dodger with custom frame and bimini. Kato
davits and an outboard hoist are mounted at the stern and the purchase
included a 10' Caribe dinghy with 8hp Johnson motor.

While we paid a little more than many of the other 37+ listed, $92,500, we
wanted the CB version for Mobile Bay where we we spend most of our time
club racing with the occasional longer race along the upper Gulf Coast or
possibly to Mexico. We have been "practicing" in our club Sunday races
since we brought her back in July (that was a fun trip too!). We raced our
first local regatta last weekend and crossed the line 5th out of 38 boats.
It should be noted that about half of those boats raced spinnaker - we did
not. In fact, we didn't even bother to take down our dodger or bimini this
time (taking down the bimini requires disassembly to get it off around the
backstay) nor did we remove any of "extra gear" down below. We used the #2
and had a crew of 6 - 4 actually crewed, 1 took a nap and 1 keep beer and
sandwiches available to all. Not bad for our first race. I expect that,
when we decide to get a little more serious, we could be polishing a lot of
silver! This is a fast boat. We are very happy with the layout,
construction and performance of our new baby.

It doesn't sound like the one you are looking at is in all that great of
shape but not that bad either. Draft was very important to us but so was
condition. We purchased a fixer-upper for the last boat and never quite
found the time to do all the things we were going to. It had classic lines,
raced well and was reliable but never was beautiful. Think about your
available funds and time when you are making your decision. If you have the
time and money to spend bringing this one back you will have a great boat.
If you want to think about ones closer to where they should be:

we looked at this one in St. Pete (WK with 5'11" draft)
http://www.boattrader.com/listing/1989-C%26amp%3BC-37-102034453
A real deal could be had here.

We also saw another CB on our delivery trip. It was, I think, a 93 37+ CB
located in Factory Bay Marina, Marco Island, FL. It isn't currently listed
but owner let us look at it with the couple with us on our trip. Not as
clean but still good shape. Worth talking to him if you are interested in
the CB model.

Good luck whichever way you go - the 37+ is a fantastic boat and you will
really enjoy it!

Re: Stus-List Landfall 38

2014-09-17 Thread Tracy Hirsh via CnC-List
I have heretofore been a quietly appreciative reader of the posts here at
the list but I feel compelled to post to this subject. We own a 37+
Centerboard and we LOVE it!

We also were looking for something we could do some coastal cruising in
but, we have been avid Sunday racers in a Pearson 30 and then a Tartan 30
for the past 22 years. We didn't want to give up racing or any chance of
winning for the potential of getting a few cruises in each year with the
kids. After about a year of research and looking at boats, we narrowed our
search down to 2 boats: the Sabre 402 and the C&C 37+. With their interior
layouts very similar, the C&C was our choice due to ease of handling. My
husband has single handed it successfully in Sunday races on numerous
occasions. Here our main competition on Sundays is an e33, an Olson25, an
S2 7.9 and sometimes the U20s. Most are considerably smaller, much lighter
boats. If we have any wind at all we have no trouble keeping up and, with
8-12 kts, we can usually come from our last-to-start position and catch
them all in the 5 miles of the standard club race. No fancy sails or
equipment needed. It has been a fun boat to race and it is a dream to
cruise, even with teenagers aboard!

Here on the Gulf Coast and, in particular, Mobile Bay, depth is always an
issue and with our 4'11" up to 7' draft we have no problems. Although there
is potential for problems with the centerboard due to its configuration (we
- my 16 year old daughter - dropped it accidentally once from full up and
broke the cable AND tore/pushed out the lead on the keel housing), a little
diligence, ie keeping the centerboard line tied on the cleat until you
actually mean to let it out, has kept disaster at bay.

A lot of the 37+ boats have the wing keel configuration. This draws 5'11".

I highly recommend the 37+, which is a 39'6" OAL boat, over the LF38 for
racing. It was designed for it! For cruising they have similar attributes.
Check them both out and see what you think.
