Re: Stus-List C&C 37/40 + Pricing

2014-09-25 Thread Us via CnC-List
Considering all of the other production boats on the market and knowing the way
these boats are built in comparison (owned 2, sailed/raced on 4), I am
wondering what your frame of reference is. Regardless and fortunate for us,
these boats were maintained and without "issues".

Sorry for your loss.

Good evening all. We looked at this boat during our search back in 2011. The
dealer purchased this boat awhile back and they have had it on the hard
uncovered for awhile. We found a surveyor in Michigan we used on several C&C
boats in the Great Lakes before we found Obsession and he was nice enough to
take an informal look at it and we were told the balsa panels in the hull were
dry. At that time the cabin sole was fine. Sorry to hear it has deteriorated.

I would go for a survey, the boat has been sitting for quite awhile at some
point the dealership will need to budge.

Re: Stus-List Wife dosen't like it when the boat leans

2014-09-23 Thread Us via CnC-List
Ok, here's a response from a woman.

I married into sailing. Started with a small boat, took trips to New England
and the Caribbean on charters in significantly larger boats (where my love for
C&C began). I learned to love the lifestyle and a bit of racing but what really
shifted my thinking was crewing on someone else's boat.

Consider this, expectations are high and so is pressure when sailing with a
spouse. When sailing on another accomplished skippers boat as added crew, you
see how the experienced crew handles everything and before you know it you
relax, a few years have passed, and your right there with them, loving every
second.

I wouldn't expect every wife to catch the bug I did, but they might certainly
see sailing from a different perspective and enjoy it more with a higher level
of confidence.

I know on Lake Lanier and other bodies of water there are some very patient and
good skippers that would welcome a learning spouse. I'd be happy to help as
well...

Kirk,

Thank you for sharing your experience, it's in line with Wally and Dennis's
comments. One of the suppliers has gallons for 100. Which is a far cry better
than a Florida source at 350. A gallon. I'm going to try Pete's at Niagara on
the lake before we make a final decision on the next step.

Thank you Tom. Niagara on the Lake is a perfect place for a solution given
Obsession's heritage and the number of C&C's that he may have worked on in that
area.

BTW, nice choice on your boat ;-)

Stus-List C&C (1990) gelcoat matching

2013-12-29 Thread Us
I hope this finds everyone relaxed and happy after Hanukkah and the Christmas
season.
We are in the process of completing a small repair on our hull and are having a
problem matching the gelcoat. It appears that most of the available gelcoat is
a few shades off (cream vs our grey-ish tint). Not acceptable in our book

Has anyone had success with gelcoat suppliers and matching the 1990 tint? We
are looking for a match and really only need a cup. Primary concern is the
match.

Stus-List Question: 37+ Recessed cabin plate

2013-04-11 Thread Us
Ok all, I have a question that has been driving me crazy... Does anyone have a
resource for the recessed plate on the port and starboard cabin that has the
C&C star logo with the 37+??? Ours is an obvious replacement as it is made of
smoke plexiglass with the emblems just glued on. I know this can't be original
and I want to replace it with something that Represents the quality of the
boat. I've spoken to some woodworkers and machinists and a one piece plate will
not be easy (reverse template needed). Any advice or resources would be GREATLY
appreciated!

Re: Stus-List Recovering Cushions

2013-03-24 Thread Us
Bob,

Your on the right track, to replace the foam with the same quality C&C used on
the original cushions would not only be crazy expensive, but in most cases
unnecessary. When we had our C&C 29 MKII, I removed the dried out
disintegrating velour fabric, cleaned the foam, and recovered every piece with
Sunbrella, backed with phifertex and reinstalled the zippers. North Star was a
1983 and outside of the old fabric, zippers and foam were in great condition
after a cleaning.

I hope you find someone in your area to do your recovering. I did mine and if
your not committed to it on a full time basis, it WILL take awhile. (ok, so
cushions, how does that make the boat go fast ;-))

Been there, done that and am now getting quotes for our 37/40+ cushions, won't
be thrilled about the cost but won't miss the 90's blue either.

Re: Stus-List Boat buying tips

2013-02-26 Thread Us
David and I looked for a C&C 37/40+ boat for over two years to find the right
one for us (condition), and while I agree with the volume of advice you have
received, there is one area that wasn't covered. (Please excuse me) We hired a
naval architect that performs surveys using a Flir thermal imaging camera so we
could look thru the fiberglass at the balsa core. A wet core shows up as a
different color. We wanted to make sure that she was the right one in every
way.

C&C makes an awesome boat, their performance has been unsurpassed in racing and
cruising from the first 40' we sailed to Block Island in the 70's to our 1983
29 MKII, the C &C 99 we crewed/raced on for 5 years, and the 37/40+ we have
owned/raced & cruised for 1.5 years. Construction is solid compared to other
models and in the case of our 1990 vintage, we were pleased to find the thru
hulls do not have any balsa core around them.

We echo what you have been told in the email strings below but also add that
having a surveyor that has a thermal imaging camera is huge.

The end result is a boat that points like nobody's business and weather racing
or cruising does so beautifully.

Good luck to you in your search and negotiations, may you have fair winds...

I hope you don't mind me chiming in, I'm the "other half" of Obsession. If she
loves sailing and the boat perhaps something that's personal (only hers). If
there is no time for jewelry, a great fleece with the boat name monogrammed on
it - could be a vest, or a jacket whichever she typically wears. Wrap it up
