Re: Stus-List Charter from Grenada

2017-10-04 Thread Violeta M Ivanova via CnC-List
Grenada is lovely. If you are up for longer passages, you can also sail
north to Dominica, Martinique, etc., all the way to Antigua, and back.
That's assuming the rules of your charter allow it. The French islands are
the best, imagine France in the Caribbean. Real coffee, good wine, and all
other goodies ... yeah, one goes for the sailing, but I like my cup of
coffee, too :)

Where will you charter in Grenada? I sailed on deliveries between the
islands, so I never chartered. Any recommendations for charter companies?
Grenada is a great option for this season after the charter fleet was hit
so badly in the VIs and other places. :(

You can fly directly to Grenada. Airfare was very cheap from/to the
Northeast US last season (except right before or after major regattas).

Make sure you have the Imray charts for the Caribbean. You can buy them in
Island Water World on the islands, if not before.

Oh my, trade winds! Just thinking of them makes me restless. Anyone needs
crew for the Caribbean? I'll work for food. :))

Re: Stus-List MIT's C&C custom 43 X Dimension available for free

2017-09-26 Thread Violeta M Ivanova via CnC-List
An update: X Dimension is back in Boston, moored at her usual home at
Waterboat Marina.

The boat was delivered from Boothbay by MIT's youngest skipper, All
American sailor Lisa Sukharev-Chuyan, 24, and her younger brother Max. Lisa
picked a good window post-Irma/Jose, before Maria hits New England. The
delivery took about 36 hours. If you want to see the skipper's report,
email me.

So yeah, this boat can sail. XD practically steers herself upwind. I have
always been able to balance her in two seconds in any wind. She sails
better than any other boat I've ever sailed, when I think about it. So
despite her wet core and a list of other problems, this is a great boat. If
you have the skills (and the money, sigh) to fix her up, you may end up
owning a beautiful C&C cruiser/racer.

I have neither the skills to fix XD up myself, nor the money to pay someone
else to do it. If I did, I would take the boat myself.

Thanks for the replies. I wouldn't make too much out of the one/two winch
handles. Maybe one floating handle got lost.

>From an MIT engineer point of view, it is good to know how a boat gets cut
up. I was wondering about the mechanics of it. Thanks for the details (as
gruesome as they are). That's not likely to happen to XD at this point,
there seem to be enough interested parties to acquire the boat.

Fair winds,

Violeta

2017-09-26 Thread Violeta M Ivanova via CnC-List
The MIT bluewater wiki was created and is maintained by MIT volunteers. I
updated a lot of stuff last year, but have not touched it since last
December. I have not seen XD this year. I don't know how much has changed
on the boat and what was reflected on the wiki.

More importantly, if people look at the wiki for reference, the following
items will *not* be included with the boat:

Handheld VHF radio
Lifejackets and harnesses
Dinghy
MOB light and mount
Storm jib
Tools
Ship's supplies (nuts, bolts, wire, tape, etc.)
Jacklines
Buckets
One of the floating winch handles (one will stay on the boat)
Foul weather gear
AIS and splitter
Radar reflector
Laptop/iPads
Chart plotting tools
Canadian charts
Garmin GPS

Also, several people from the list have looked at the survey already. It
seems XD is in worse shape than I'd thought. I am no expert on boat repairs
-- I have never dealt with wet balsa core or anything like that. I am on
this list because I am learning a lot from members with vastly more
experience than I have. I very much appreciate people emailing me back with
comments.

Maybe someone on the list will acquire XD and we'll read more about it, or
aybe someone else will acquire her, or maybe the boat will go to the
cutter. Speaking of which ...

How does one cut up a boat? Seriously, what do you do with a 43-foot boat,
if you want to destroy it?

I have started calling XD "it", not "she". I guess that's a goodbye.

Stus-List crew for C&C 32 in SF Bay

2017-09-25 Thread Violeta M Ivanova via CnC-List
Hi all,

Anyone interested and available to sail a C&C 32 with me in San Francisco
Bay this week? Not my boat, so I am not allowed to single-hand. I need one
crew, will take more, if there's interest. Any weekday after 3 pm works for
me with preference to Tue-Thu. May be able to sail more than once, too.

Jib and main only, we'll just cruise around for a few hours. I am new(ish)
to the Bay Area and love exploring it under sail.

If you are interested, please email or call/text me re. days/times of
availability and experience.

Fair winds,

Stus-List MIT's C&C custom 43 X Dimension available for free

2017-09-22 Thread Violeta M Ivanova via CnC-List
Hi all,

MIT has decided to dispose of the 1973 C&C custom 43 X Dimension (or XD as
she is affectionately known). The boat is available for free - yes, free!
MIT Legal is preparing a no-cost transfer of title as we speak.

See below a copy of the email from the sailing master announcing the
decision to several mailing lists.

There will be a drawing for those interested to acquire the boat at 1800
next Thursday, October 28, at the MIT Sailing Pavilion in Cambridge, MA.
If you wish to own XD, either you or a friend/representative must be there
in person.

I hope XD finds a good new home, so I am posting on this list. What better
place to find a good owner for a C&C :)

There is information about the boat here:
http://sailing.mit.edu/wiki/index.php/X-Dimension_systems

XD needs a lot of TLC at present, but as far as I know all problems are
fixable. A recent survey found wet core and there is also a list of other
issues. I got a rough estimate from a boatyard in Maine for $35K to fix the
structural problems. How much the rest will cost depends on how much the
new owners could do themselves vs. paying someone else to do it.

The boat is currently in Southport, ME, in the facilities of Hodgdon Yacht
Serivces (or was there last time I heard). There is a plan in the works,
weather-dependent, to return her to Boston on the weekend of Sep 29-Oct 1
(i.e., after the drawing). The rudder (mentioned below) has been repaired.

Despite her problems, XD sailed beautifully every time I took her out
around Boston Harbor last year. I have not seen her at all this season,
because I have been mostly away from Boston / the east coast. I love that
boat and will miss her.

If you would like more information and/or are interested in acquiring the
boat, you can email or call the MIT sailing master - his contact is below.
Feel free to contact me with questions, too. I have a copy of the survey,
which I can email you, and some other useful information. However, I do not
know all details, so best to go through the powers that be at MIT.

Fair winds,

Violeta

Greetings MIT Sailors,

After a recent structural survey in anticipation of lots of contracted
corrective work on our beloved X-D, it appears best to dispose of her. The
balsa core is wet in many areas on the deck and in the transom area. The
rudder was whacked at some point this summer and we are having that
repaired right now in Maine. The boat is available immediately and I am
contacting other schools which might consider her for a donation. Yes,
that's right, she would be free to anyone who wants it.

If anyone is truly interested in having her, please write back to me
directly. I will be happy to share her survey with you and some quotations
which we have received for corrective surgery. However, this is going to be
a quick disposal. If necessary, she will be cut up.

Sad, sad news as so many have enjoyed her but she is unfit for our
university sailing program and must go.

Thanks in advance for your interest and we will soon be sailing again.

Re: Stus-List Learning to sail in a small boat

2017-08-30 Thread Violeta M Ivanova via CnC-List
I learned to sail on dinghies more years ago than I care to admit. I still
sail dinghies, though my preference is now to roomy boats like the 420; not
too motivated to sail a Laser these days. Dinghies (1) are fun, (2) keep my
basic sailing skills alive, and (3) keep me humble. No matter how many big
boats I skipper now, a dinghy can still get me in the water pretty quickly.

Dinghy sailors make the best helmsmen for yachts. Yeah, it may be a
40-footer or a 60-footer or whatever, and the seas can build big offshore,
but that primal feel of how a boat moves on the water driven by the wind
still works. I developed that feel on little tipsy things on the Charles
River in Boston, and it works in the middle of the Atlantic, too.

I've seen a fair number of big-ego big-boaters who steer a sailing yacht
like a car. That or punch in the auto pilot and never bother to trim the
sails properly to balance the boat. It drives me crazy.

This being said, dinghies may be unrealistic choice, if one starts sailing
late in life or has limited agility for other reasons. Small keelboats
(maybe with an outboard?) could be a good choice in this case. From the C&C
family, I have only sailed a 1970s C&C 43 so far. One of my favorite boats
ever - she sails like a dream! - but she is not a beginner's boat.

In any case, it is never too late to fall in love with sailing! :-)
